My Conclusion for the Week: Life is Classist

Thu May 01, 2008 at 02:18:27 PM PDT

I'm sure most of you have heard of the Obama pig. You know, that pig balloon Roger Waters unveiled at Coachella Fest last week, that had his support for Obama sketched all over it? The story goes that the pig was unveiled and then "escaped" into the night. A $10,000 reward and lifetime tickets to Coachella were offered up and the hunt was on for that pig. Guess where they found it...

Is CNN Hurting For Cash?

Mon Apr 21, 2008 at 12:05:17 PM PDT

So I'm doing my morning CNN browsing and next to the headline links what do I see but a little t-shirt icon. Apparently CNN is now printing headlines on shirts and selling them to the public. I really don't get it. Am I that out of touch or has the news really started prostituting itself? Right at this second on CNN you can purchase a "Waste food dished up to hungry diners" or a "Prince drops copter in galpal's yard" shirt for just 15 bucks in gray, white, or black complete with a time stamp. This has to be a joke. Has to be. I'm looking to my MT sisters for some enlightenment on the subject. You know I would love a "Bush Impeached!" t-shirt with the exact moment it hit the news but "Weird fish leave sea, spawn on beach" is a bit much.

In Other News: Birth Doesn't Really Hurt

Wed Apr 09, 2008 at 10:01:34 AM PDT

The other day I received an email from a friend, you know, everyday stuff. But this email was special. It came with a gift- the gift of a Fox News link. Now I usually avoid Faux News for sanity's sake but this being a good friend who I know was sharing this with me with only the best of intentions I decided to read it. It's been days and my blood hasn't stopped boiling. Besides it being a typical Fox load offering little to no facts with plenty of spin, it hit me in a sore spot. The piece is entitled "The 'Recession' Is a Media Myth" and it came to me during the second week my husband had been without work.

Teen Parents Deserve Much More

In light of the hype surrounding the movie Juno, here is one teen mom's perspective. Thanks for posting, MaggieFrances! -Elisa

Sitting here wondering where to begin when my 4 year old daughter, Lilith, walks in and says "Mama, I have something for you to make you feel better" (I have been sick for the past few days) she then puts an imaginary bandaid on my forehead and skips out of the room. I can't help but laugh to myself. She is too cute- looks nothing like me, actually the complete opposite, with her long stringy blond hair, fair skin, and blue eyes. I remember when she was born like it was yesterday. They handed her to me weighing only 5lbs 12oz with the biggest feet I have ever seen on something so small. She cuddled up to me and I was hers forever.
I can't help but remember those few days with a pang of sadness, though. The months leading up to that day were filled with pressure, whispers, dirty looks, and opinions we didn't need to hear. Instead of being supported and people rejoicing for us we were looked down on and lectured. Why? Because we were 17.
