First Social Justice and Activisim Thread

Mon Jan 01, 2007 at 10:50:01 AM PDT

If you have a pet cause or a project you dream about but don't quite get to, despite best intentions, this thread is for you.

It's a three month experiment wherein we post our ideas, our progress, and even our setbacks on some personal change - large or small - for social justice. A little support can go a long way toward realizing our goals.

I'll post the thread every other Monday.

Happy New Year!

MT Social Justice or Activism Thread?

Tue Dec 26, 2006 at 09:18:41 AM PDT

I have really loved our weekly Health and Fitness thread. All change is hard, and it's great to have and give support. Lately I've been pondering about what I can do to work on other personal habits that I'd like to change: namely, I'd like to get into better habits about "green" household products and buying local and seasonal produce. I also feel very helpless about larger political issues that bother me but can't think of what to do that would really feel helpful. I have considered Habitat for Humanity and have researched local options. I'm just one person with limited time, so I want to put my time and energy where it can really count.

Would other MTs be interested in a semi-monthly Social Justice or Activism thread, similar to our Health and Fitness thread? Goal would be similar - a place to seek support and kudos and ideas for change we want to make. A place to write about our baby steps toward change and major accomplishments. "Social Justice" or "Activism" can be writ large here ... like my goals toward green products or getting a playground built or volunteering in a school for storytime or implementing a change in your workplace. Anything that feels worthwhile socially and personally, and yet is still hard to rustle up time and energy.

I am thinking a three month experiment ... January through March and let's say I post the thread every other week (every week could feel like pressure, once a month we could lose momentum ... what do you think?).

Please share your thoughts.

Decision Time

Mon Dec 11, 2006 at 09:20:19 PM PDT

Well, fellow MTs, I had to make the big decision this week: I'm going back to work in January. Actually, the decision was not so much whether to go back at all, but where to go back. I've mentioned before that I'm in mental health and working on my license; in California, we are on a 6 year clock to get our training hours. If you surpass your 6 years, you give up hours, and that would be a very undesirable thing, giving up those hard won hours.  Aside from the clock, not having the license is just a huge thing that hangs over my head and limits my choices considerably.

So I made a decision to go back to the tried and true job for the third year in a row. Normally, we change placements every year for a variety of clients and supervisors. Tomorrow I will turn down the new placement I interviewed for and am interested in because it requires many more hours per week, and I don't feel good leaving my ds that many hours a week. He's six months.
