My children are high-school and middle-school ages, so the preschool stories really have me looking back. I thought of the wonderful poem by Adrienne Rich, "Diving into the Wreck," and I wonder whether any of you know it, and whether you view the journey as positive or negative.

Here it is.

   I never thought I would be around.  I had played for years and mom kept me current.  Lost contact with my siblings and never thought twice.  I settled down and planned my wedding.  I am a nurse and even though my granmother was ill, I didn't see it. She died. I married. My mom and I sort of  getting along . New year's Eve @ Kate's ( sister) Mom tells us she  is going to have a procedure. Radio ablation. My husband is a doctor.  At the time I was an intensive care RN. I begged Mom not to go forward. she died too. Then my older brother.  My husband's mother observed, he couldn't live without her."  Then my father's wife.  then my father. Too late to be sorry for arrogance.   As the list grew so did my skills. I bathed and cared for a woman i never forgave my father for. Then I bathed and cared for him. Now I take care of kids.
