Rants and raves on modern motherhood

Late-Night Liberty: Breakfast Foods Edition

Okay, mommy confession for the day: I am one of those annoying people who lectures her family on the importance of breakfast. "Breakfast is the most important meal of the day," I will tell my husband who, if he could, would take pills to meet his daily nutritional requirements. He doesn't receive the same pleasure from food like I do.

I will hound my children all morning until they eat every crumb of pop tart on their plates.

I actually get up at the crack of dawn (5 a.m.), to work out and eat breakfast in peace and quiet. So you could say that this column in the Washington Post newsletter recently caught my eye:

Q: I can't figure out what is good breakfast food. Do you have some recipes or ideas that are easy in the a.m. or prepared the night before? - Ann

A: A survey last year showed that while 92 percent of Americans identify breakfast as the day's most important meal, only 46 percent manage to eat it. The best breakfast food is something you'll actually eat: That could be cold pizza, a fruit smoothie, a hard-boiled egg and a piece of fruit or the trusty old bowl of cold cereal and skim milk. Try today's recipes for Irish steel-cut oatmeal (you can make it the night before) and nut-butter concoctions you might enjoy in the morning.

Yum! As a kid, I ate dinner leftovers all the time for breakfast. I wake up hungry.

I still eat hearty breakfasts on the weekends. For example, I will have an egg omelet with vegetables and cheddar cheese and polish it off with coffee or juice. On the weekdays, I stick to a pop tart or a bowl of cereal. That is basically what the kids eat, too.

What about you? Do you eat breakfast in the morning? What quick and healthy recipes do you have?
