Why Do Girls Like Pink?

In an article I have been meaning to mention for over a week now, Jezebel raised a poignant question: Why are all the products for girls pink? Is it that they inherently prefer the color therefore marketers jump on it? Or, are they socially conditioned to like the color?

Jezebel highlighted this article in Britain's Telegraph where moms there are up in arms over the number of pink clothes and toys for girls.

You can't find girls past the age of three who aren't obsessed with the colour," said Sue Palmer, an author who wrote the book Toxic Childhood.

"It's just so insidious and it shows how commercial forces can get under their skin even by that age.

"You can't seem to get anything that's not pink for girls, whether it's clothes, books or toys.

"To me, the real danger is the extent to which marketers influence and infiltrate young children's minds.

"They have managed to infiltrate playground culture where peer pressure is so strong."

The subject has attracted hundreds of postings on the mothers' website, Mumset,

"I am trying to find a nice first bike for my child that doesn't involved either pink tassels or firemen connotations," wrote one exasperated parent.

"I cannot believe how sexist toys are."

But another, who said that she hated pink, admitted: "Unfortunately we were given so much pink stuff when our daughter was born, that I find I'm actually getting used to it."
