Pregnancy Woes, (woah, woah, woah)

Wed May 07, 2008 at 10:11:03 AM PDT

I figured there is such a plethora of pregnant and recently pregnant women on the board right now that perhaps we could share our best tips and tricks for getting through some fo the less "pleasant" aspects of pregnancy.

Of course I am selfishly motivated because I am giving birth to our second (last?) child in June. But hopefully other Moms and Moms to be can benefit from the collected wisdom here.

My personal pregnancy bugaboos? How the hell do you get a good night's sleep? Swollen ankles! How to avoid an episiotomy! What if your OB starts talking C-sections in your 7th month?! Warning signs of preeclampsia?

  • Carpal tunnel (0 / 0)

and hand swelling, but it's the falling asleep that really messed me up.  I'm glad it turned out to pregnancy related and not a permanent degeneration so early in life.

  • I have no tips (0 / 0)

except to just power through and remember the beauty part--when it's over, it's over, and you have the biggest reward you will ever have.  The only reward you will ever have for major discomfort.  When I went to the hospital to have my son, I was dreading birth and looking forward to not being pregnant anymore.  But also, I had this sadness, knowing that he would probably be my last.  I kept thinking, "this will probably be the last time I'm in the hospital for a happy occasion."

My weirdest symptom was nausea triggered by "art".  My daughter's films, songs and books that I was tired of.    Most notably, the beautiful animated film Snow White, and this obnoxious little My Little Pony book.  Had me not only queasy but vomiting, every single time.

  • breathing issues (0 / 0)

I hate getting out of breath so easy.  Our laundry room is downstairs and a couple of trips up and down the stairs and I'm breathing really hard.

I hate the morning sickness too.  But now that I am past that, it seems like a distant memory.

  • Fetal Hiccups (0 / 0)

Babyfish gets hiccups ALL THE FREAKIN TIME!  And not for 10 or 15 minutes, more like 45.  It happens several times a day, particularly at that blissful moment where I get the "giant body vs. multiple pillows" ratio just right ...  I tried to describe it to some non parent co workers and all I could think of was "Try to imagine how horrible it would be if there was a little alien in your body with the hiccups, and you couldn't control it, stop it, or excise it."  Their sympathy went up a few notches!

Oh yeah, and in the last couple of days, my toes have started swelling to resemble little sausages.

Of course, when I am up nursing every two hours in a month or so, these will be "the good ol' days". Ha!

    • I'm also getting puffy feet and ankles (0 / 0)

but yeah, compared to nursing every two hours it will be a breeze! And you're still working too! Wow. At least I can drop my daughter off for school for three whole hours everyday at school!

Those hiccups kill me. I wish I could hold my breath for them, you know?

    • My second (DS)... (0 / 0)

had hiccups like that all the time.  But, the funny thing is my first (DD) NEVER had them!  I had no idea what people were talking about - I kept thinking something was wrong and I just couldn't feel it. Or they were over-exaggerating!  Now I know she just didn't have them. My DS made up for DD not having hiccups!  And I love your explanation.

  • Other than the fact that you get a kid out of it (0 / 0)

everything about pregnancy sucked for me.  I'm so happy that I'm never doing that again.

I childproofed my house but they got back in somehow.

  • But there's something about it I really liked (0 / 0)

Don't get me wrong, there was a lot that was miserable.  With DS (my second) I had a horrible last 3 weeks - this pressure on my pelvis that made me feel like he was just going to drop out...  And then he came late!  Ugh.  Both kids at 41 weeks...  that waiting game was not my strong suit.

But, feeling the first kick and the somersaults in my belly...  Knowing exactly how they'd react to certain foods I'd eat.  I'm a grad student and was in classed when pregnant with DS.  The other students (mostly younger) would all just laugh in the afternoon classes because DS did gymnastics after lunch and his activities were visible to anyone near me.

One friend once said that she just wished her DH could do it - and while I'd give up labor and delivery in a minute - I think that having gone through pregnancy there are parts of it that I'd be so jealous of if DH did it instead.

As an earlier poster mentioned, maybe Mother Nature is already tricking me!

    • Yeah, you sound waaaay too (0 / 0)

nostalgic!! No, seriously, the fluttery little kicks, the responses to food and drink, holding a glass of ice water against your belly and see them try to kick it away.

      Awesome.

In fact one of our favorite "baby stories" was about our DD before she was ever born. I was 6 months along with her on our 2nd anniversary and we went out to a very quiet romantic dinner. As hubby slid closer to me on the banquette seat and put his arm around me, our tiny lil' unborn daughter kicked so hard that all the silverware jumped and the glasses rattled. People at other tables were looking over at us! The waiter stopped to see what was wrong, meanwhile I am laughing so hard I can't breathe and Hubby slides away from me, saying, "Okay, okay Bean. I will stay away from Mommy!"

  • Loved and Hated being pregnant (0 / 0)

With the girl it was fabulous, with the boy it was hell.  I don't know how I got through it, I just did.  I was a total b*tch the entire time, I know that, and maybe it helped.  I guess somewhere in my subconscious, I figured if I had to be miserable, so could everyone else.  I had MRSA, pre-eclampsia, and gestational diabetes.  Gah!!!  No wonder my poor dh wants to be done with having babies. Bless him, he never ever uttered a word about my horrible behavior, and always defended me.

    • awww! (0 / 0)

Your hubby sounds like a sweetheart!

      • He really is (0 / 0)

I'm very fortunate.  I just finished nursing school, and he totally pitched in with EVERYTHING.  I know my being in school was almost as hard on him as it was for me.  My friends are all really jealous.  On his days off he would take the boy (16 months old) and the girl (11 yrs old) and disappear so I could study.  When we were both home, you name it, he did it.  Including washing the dirty diapers.    My mom even brags about him to all of her friends!

  • What isn't a woe? (0 / 0)

Honestly, I have found every part of pregnancy bothersome at some level.  Heck, even feeling the baby move gets tiresome when it keeps me up at night.

I am really the most miserable pregnant woman I know.  How sad.

  • This is kinda weird, (0 / 0)

I just delivered a boy March 1st, but the worst part of my pregnancy was not the gestational diabetes, the preeclampsia, the lactation-induced tumor in my left breast...it was not being able to find a pair of pants that didn't bother me!  I was never comfortable, I was always pulling them up or down to try to be more comfortable.  The slightest pressure made me miserable.
2nd place would be sleeping positions.  I got so tired of only sleeping on my sides.  My ears literally hurt from laying on them all night.

  • well, I loved (0 / 0)

being pregnant.  easy labors. first one induced took 5 hours.  last two about two hours.
but I hated drinking decaf and no wine until late in pregnancy.  Even though I was pregnant one new year's didn't yet know it and got rip roarin' drunk.  worried through out the whole pregnancy!
my husband used to grab the foot or whatever was poking out.
didn't like that I couldn't sleep due to stuffy nose, but I usually found a comfortable position.
the only really dreadful thing, I got giardia in the 7th month (july) of my last pregnancy.  I had dreadful diarrhea and thought it was just the MN summer heat.  only going to doc once a month by then, so suffered for a month.  I mean it seemed like everything I ate went directly in one end and out the other, did not pass go, did not stop to collect $200.  finally at doc appt, he suspected right away, and since I was LOSING weight at a time I should still be gaining he had to weigh damage to baby from drugs or prolonged weight loss and dehydration.  took the drug, 5 days, giardia done and pregnancy proceeded no problems.  actually the only one of 3 pregnancies that went all the way.  First two were 3 weeks early and so by the third i whined because he seemed so late, but he was just on time +4 days!
