  • my week (0 / 0)

I've been having a lot more fun since giving up on the half marathon idea. My body wants to hibernate, yo - it's autumn for me! Made it to the gym twice, ran four times (twice as part of the gym session, twice outside of) and it's been really freeing. Plus, I managed to convince DH to come out on a run with me on Sunday, which was great fun. So:

Mon: gym. Ran 3 miles in 29 minutes, 0.5m cooldown, bike
Tues: run - 4 miles easy
    Wed: swim with Jess
Thurs: long run - no less than 6 miles
    Fri:gym. weights
Sat: rest or run with DH and Jess in the pram
Sun: rest or run with DH and Jess in the pram

on the 1/2 marathon for now too.  Just too much too fast for me.  I'm hoping that come early fall, I'll be ready to do it.

I know what you mean about your body wanting to hibernate in the fall.  For us on the other side of the globe, it's go go go... and I think that's why my ankle's giving me a bit of trouble.  All the extra gardening, spring cleaning, and general running around that comes with the change of the seasons.

      • yeah (0 / 0)

I am not, nor ever will be, anything more than a recreational shuffler. I run for sanity and vanity, not to bring extra stress in my life to meet a goal my heart's not into! Would much rather keep my fitness up, have some fun and kick back to do a half in our spring!

  • My acupuncturist aunt was here (0 / 0)

this weekend, and she worked on my ankle, which has been bothering me a bit again lately.  Of course I'm fully to blame for the problem... running without enough stretching and yoga.  She's also a physical therapist and told me that she still saw swelling and that I needed to be gentle with it for a little while.  That said, I'm running a 5K this weekend w/my Mom's puggle for a Rescue Pet fundraiser.  I think I should be okay for that distance, but I had better step up the stretching and yoga if I want to increase my distance again.

    So, this week:
Mon:  Gentle yoga, lots of runner's type stretches
Tues:  4 miles XT Pilates matwork
    Wed: Yoga
    Thurs:  Easy 5K run
    Fri:  Yoga
    Sat:  5K race w/me mum's dug  ;-)

    • ooooh, on-call acupuncturist! (0 / 0)

      that must have been nice!

Definitely take it easy; the older I get, the kinder I try to be on the body. No sense pushing yourself and blowing out body parts for a short term goal. Life's the marathon!

      • I wish (0 / 0)

she was on call... she lives up in Canada and was just here for a visit.  She brings her needles everytime she comes, which is about 4x a year though.  :)

I agree about being kind to the body and listening to the body.  Boy, have I learned the hard way in the past that not listening to your body is soooooo NOT a good idea.

  • My fitness project for the week: (0 / 0)

I have 5 tons of hay to stack in the barn, in 100 100 lb bales. DH is forbidden to help, since he's allergic to hay. I'm grateful to have it - hay is going to be hard to come by this year. Hopefully, I can make this last until next spring.

Over the weekend we blazed a path into our creek, which is a steep 15' gully protected by blackberries and other vegetation. I didn't think I'd gone up and down that many times, but man, are my quads sore. It was fun to go explore and splash in it, though.

  • Finally (0 / 0)

I saw a physical therapist.  She told me that the problem is that I'm overly limber.  She discourages me from yoga! :-(

She does feel, though, that she can get me in working order pretty quickly and that my build is fine for light running.

    • I'm really glad you're seeing a PT! (0 / 0)

How odd is it about the yoga - turns out that all along when you thought you were "punishing" yourself by not doing yoga, you were doing the right thing!!

Will the PT help you find a good roster of activities that you can do besides running?

      • Yes (0 / 0)

She's having me build up strength.  It's really boring because she has me do 90 reps of these teeny, tiny movements.  I knew my abs were weak, but I thought that I was strong for the most part.  She says that because I'm "hyper-mobile", I need to balance it with strength, because I'm apparently weak as a kitten.

She's a nice person, but enough with the short jokes!  I can take a short joke if it's clever and well timed (I'm not insecure about it), but man alive does she know how to drive an already lame joke into the ground.

        • why not tell her so? (0 / 0)

you've hired her as a professional; you dictate the relationship - including the short jokes. You could tell her that the short jokes get in the way of you focusing on the exercises. You don't - and shouldn't - have to take that!

And on the multiple reps of small movements, once you start seeing results, I'm sure the pride will at least help compensate for the boring factor!

          • She's already helping (0 / 0)

But you have to get up pretty early in the morning to think up a short joke that I haven't many times as a kid.  As an adult I don't hear as many.

  • get-away week (0 / 0)

It's always so hectic the week before we go away.

I had a dreadful run on Sunday.  Hadn't eaten enough the day before and an oncoming cold seemed to sap me of my energy.  So, then I didn't run Mon or Tues.  I ran a couple of miles on the treadmill this morning before my shins started bothering me (I've not been having shin issues running outside)and then rode the bike for 15 minutes as well and took a steam to try to sweat out some of this cold.

I feel pretty alright, just mainly a sore throat. I'm going to try to run tomorrow and then hopefully get a run in during our trip.  The campground is right on a bike trail, which I'm hoping is also a walk/run trail.  I'm sure it will be an active weekend no matter what.
