To refresh your memory, she's the St.Louis Mom who created a fake MySpace profile as a teenage boy to torment her daughter's former 13 year old friend.. The girl she was sending messages to ended up committing suicide.I know we talked about this when it happened. Any thoughts?

I don't know how I feel about the action, that's for the courts to decide, but I think this quote in interesting...

"The Internet is a world unto itself. People must know how far they can go before they must stop. They exploited a young girl's weaknesses," Hernandez said. "Whether the defendant could have foreseen the results, she's responsible for her actions."

  • good (0 / 0)

I think this is a great move. The woman allegedly bullied a young girl til the girl felt she had no other outlet than suicide. The facts will be laid out before a jury and the jury will decide guilt or innocence. But let this be a lesson to cyber-bullies - there are consequences for your actions, goddamnit.

  • So basically she's being (0 / 0)

charged for knowingly harassing someone she knew to be a minor, correct?  Also, for fraudulently creating a fake account in order to do so?  I can live with her facing these charges.

  • Couldn't be happier. (0 / 0)

A grown woman, engaged in harassing a teenager.  The phrase "You should know better" is running in my head.    You shouldn't be allowed to get away with it just because its the Internet.

  • yeah!!! (0 / 0)

this is the crux of it

You shouldn't be allowed to get away with it just because its the Internet.

I feel if I have to engage my students on what is appropriate and not appropriate in their different "worlds" (home, friends,school/work, cyber) and hammer home that if you wouldn't/couldn't do it in person that DOING IT ON THE INTERNET(AND/OR ANONYMOUSLY) DOES NOT MAKE IT OKAY then this grown woman should certainly face the consequences of her actions.  I'm sorry, there are no mitigating factors about how the other family dealt with their daughter's struggle that will absolve the perpetrator of her crime.

  • i agree with the others.... (0 / 0)

she really deserves to be punished, and i really type or say those words. that an adult would be so malicious and threatening to a child is just wrong, and i am glad to see the courts taking note on this issue.

  • She deserves it & more (0 / 0)

Think about it: she actually spent time planning what she was going to say to this girl, and what she hoped the outcome would be.  If she had been sending snail mail, or calling her, or following her home from school doing this stuff, the local police would've been called immediately.  Same thing IMO.
