My Conclusion for the Week: Life is Classist

Thu May 01, 2008 at 02:18:27 PM PDT

I'm sure most of you have heard of the Obama pig. You know, that pig balloon Roger Waters unveiled at Coachella Fest last week, that had his support for Obama sketched all over it? The story goes that the pig was unveiled and then "escaped" into the night. A $10,000 reward and lifetime tickets to Coachella were offered up and the hunt was on for that pig. Guess where they found it...

Before I get to where they found it I have to set the stage. I live about a 5 minute drive from the polo grounds where Coachella is held every year. On one side of the polo grounds you have the poorer and down right impoverished areas of Coachella and a little farther up of Thermal as well. We're talking your average lower class homes but also your shacks and single-wide mobile homes housing a family of 10. But on the other side you have the beautiful new homes of the wealthy in the much nicer part of the valley, La Quinta. These homes are in the millions and mostly are used as vacation homes. A lot (if not all) are built with golf courses right there on the property. I know this because my husband use to make his living off of building and installing things for these country clubers. So there you go- on one side the stable homes of the wealthier-than-not and on the other the shacks of the poor immigrants.

Now guess where that balloon ended up?

Just take a wild guess....

That's right! It ended up in La Quinta in the back yard of two country clubing families. I have nothing against country clubs or clubers. Please don't think that. But I have to admit my reaction when hearing of this was to clutch my hair and scream to the heavens "OH COME ON!!! YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME!!!!!" I just wanted to see the little man- the nonexistent immigrant workers- get a miracle break. Is it really too much to ask for a ABC Family channel type ending? Apparently.

Do you ever doubt the existence of the true 50/50 chance? I mean it could just as easily gone the other way...but we all knew it wouldn't! Grr.

those people probably have NO IDEA about any of the music that is at Coachella.

It's just like when very wealthy people win the lotto... ugh!

I live in Murrieta, but spent a good part of my weekend dealing with all the college kids that got arrested for possession/being under the influence of a "controlled" substance. I own a bail bond company and the Coachella Fest is one of the busiest weekends of the year.
