Need New Running Music

Mon Apr 28, 2008 at 09:19:43 AM PDT

Hey all, here is a fun activity. As I mentioned in the open thread below, I've just started running again. And I need to stay motivated.

The problem is I am behind in my Entertainment Weekly reading and iTunes shopping. The music in my iPod has not been updated in eons. So I am wondering what you youngsters are listening to nowadays? Shuffle the music on your iPod and let me know what your top 10 picks are.

I will go first:

1.) Juliana by DLG
2.) Independent Women Part I by Destiny's Child
3.) Amor Latino by Carlos Vives
4.) Mirándote by Frankie Ruiz
5.) One Song Glory from the Rent Soundtrack
6.) True Colors by Cyndi Lauper
7.) La Llamada by Selena
8.) Ella Dice by Juan Luis Guerra & 440
9.) La Que Me Quita Y No Me Da by Frankie Ruiz
10.) Heaven Is a Place on Earth by Belinda Carlisle

As you can tell I am stuck in the '80s and '90s. Help!

I'm doing the 5k training program which involves jogging and then walking in weird intervals.  To that end, I literally have the SAME song play six times, so I can run like I am supposed to (knowing where the 1:30 break is).

Daft Punk's Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger.

However, that's about to change, since now it wants me to run in staggered bursts.  Anyone know of a good 1:30 or 1:00 song?

When I'm not pretending that I'm training, I have :

    1.     7 Nation Army-White Stripes
    1.     Cowboy-Kid Rock
    1.     American Idiot-Green Day
    1.     Fell in Love With A Girl-White Stripes
    1.     Baba O'Riley-The Who
  • Yay, I need new music too! (0 / 0)

Here is what is on my workout playlist:

    1.  Handlebars - Flobots (just put this one on actually, a new awesome hiphop group with a very political message)
    1.  4 Minutes - Madonna featuring J. Timberlake
    1.  Walk On - U2
    1.  Shipping Up to Boston - from The Departed Soundtrack (Dropkick Murphys)
    1.  Stronger - Kanye West
    1.  Settlin' - Sugarland
    1.  Move Along - All American Rejects
    1.  Don't Stop the Music - Rihanna
    1.  Love Me Like the World is Ending - Ben Lee
    1.  Layla - Eric Clapton

I also have the entire Wicked Soundtrack and lots of music from Death Cab for Cutie (although they are more wind-down music, than workout).

  • Here's my 10 (0 / 0)

Although it's just the random shuffle and not programmed.

    1. The sun never shines (on closed doors)- Flogging Molly
    1. Blow at High Dough - The Tragically Hip
    1. Sympathy for the Devil - The Rolling Stones
    1. In your Honour - Foo Fighters
    1. Wild Flower - The Cult
    1. Simple - Collective Soul
    1. Darkness on the Edge of Town - Bruce Springsteen
    1. Bottle it Up - Sara Bareilles
    1. Blister in the Sun - Violent Femmes
    1. Something I should know - Great Big Sea

It's actually kind of an interesting statement on our musical tastes like that.  Athough no Raffi ended up in the mix this time.

Over on Offsprung they started a mixed CD exchange and I'm trying to create a mixed CD for people I don't know.  Good times.

I childproofed my house but they got back in somehow.

  • I don't know about 10 but (0 / 0)

a few favorites for me include Pulp's "Disco 2000" and "Common People" from the album Different Class and Blur's "Bank Holiday" and "Tracy Jacks" from Parklife.

Britpop of the 90s makes good running music.  :)

  • This could be embarassing (0 / 0)

but since I've been also trying to get in shape to run a 5k I'll post my training music. It's a messy menagerie of music that's for sure. Maybe some of us E. Bay MTer's should try to train together?

    1. Who are you - The who
    1. Isrealites - Desmond Dekker
    1. Loser - Beck
    1. Express yourself - Madonna
    1. I'm afraid of Americans - David Bowie
    1. Schism - Tool
    1. Runnin' With the Devil - Van Halen
    1. Desire - U2
    1. Take Five - Dave Brubek
    1. Honey - Moby

OK, I'm old. There's no gettin' around it. What is the name of the 5k program your doing round peg? Is it working for you?

  • Fun! (0 / 0)

I ran out to the car to grab my iPod from my gym bag. I had an iPod catastrophe 2 nights before I ran a half marathon last year, and did a rush upload of what I remembered. Haven't really updated since, so I could use some new tunes...

    1. Come on Eileen - Dexy's Midnight Runners
    1. Let's Go Crazy - Prince
    1. Wanna Be Startin' Something - Michael Jackson
    1. Holiday - Madonna
    1. Give It To Me - Timbaland, Justin Timberlake, Nelly Furtado
    1. La Tortura - Shakira
    1. No One - Alicia Keys
    1. Point Of No Return - Expose
    1. Spiderwebs - No Doubt
    1. Don't Stop Believin' - Journey

As you can see my musical tastes run the gamut from Latin to 80's New Wave to freestyle dance to pop to cheesy power ballads. But I, too, could use some new tunes.

Two newer songs that are on my iPod and get me pumped are "Don't Stop the Music" by Rihanna and "Stronger" by Kanye West.

Good luck on the race training, Elisa!

    • Of Shakira , Liza's godfather and I alway say (0 / 0)

"ah. Shakira. A Charo for the new millennium"

      I love her.

      • I so dig her (0 / 0)

I discovered her back in college, before she was a crossover sensation and sang only in Spanish. Truth be told I'm not as crazy about her English stuff, but "Hips Don't Lie" makes me want to shake it. And since I've got plenty of hips, it's kind of my unofficial theme song. :-)

        • I don't care for her music but (0 / 0)

I heard her on NPR the other day and was incredibly impressed with her.  She's working with the Global Campaign for Education.   I had no idea - her image is mostly sexpot so to hear her speak was amazing.  She won my respect for sure.

          • thanks for the link (0 / 0)

            I will listen to it.

She wasn't always a sexpot, she started out as more of a rocker chick and plays a mean guitar. She really is very talented and her Spanish lyrics are to die for.

            • It's too bad (0 / 0)

that her image has been constructed that way though.   When I pick women to listen to I usually stay away from anyone using sex to sell - so to know that she's a real songwriter and guitarist makes a difference to me.   I hold a strange place in the music marketplace where I want my artists to be musicians and not carefully created images.

              • agree (0 / 0)

She made her crossover right after the whole "Latin Explosion"-- i.e. Ricky Martin, Jennifer Lopez. I am guessing the powers that be decided the Colombian girl with the funny accent had to be sexy in order to go mainstream. I am guessing the fact that she's smokin' hot helped her get noticed by American consumers, but I was a bit puzzled as the Shakira I knew was so different (not to mention brunette!).

    • Hey, songs I know (0 / 0)

Sadly many of the responses contain not only songs I have never heard of, but people I have never heard of.

it was nice to read yours because it contained songs I know.

  • My random tunage (0 / 0)

Don't Let Us Get Sick- Jill Sobule
    Keep on Trying- Poco
    Life Goes On- Shawn Hlookoff
    Broken- Lifehouse
    Fix You- Coldplay
    I'm Alright- Jo Dee Messina
Let There Be Morning- The Perishers
Life Is Beautiful- The Icarus Account
    Lucky- Bif Naked

    I'm not proud...

Lots of good stuff on Kanye's new album, always good for exercising!

Sweetest Girl by Wyclef is another good one.

I love that song from that movie "Once."  It's not fast, but it's still a good one to exercise with, although you have to fight the urge to sing along.

I also like that Common song with Lily Allen.

I feel so old too.  I can hardly watch MTV anything anymore!

  • seeing as though (0 / 0)

I do not "believe" in running unless you are being chased (and therefore, ill prepared with an i-tunes list for said chase) I cannot offer a running list, but  ten to groove to are:

    1. Work That, Mary J Blige
    1. U + Ur Hand, P!nk
    1. Viva Las Vegas, the Grascals
    1. Love Child, Diana Ross
    1. Fighter, Christina Aguilera
    1. Wild Wild West, Escape Club
    1. Tangled Up Roses, Shooter Jennings
    1. Hips Don't Lie, Shakira
    1. Crazy, Gnarls Barkley
    1. Word Up, Korn
  • Oh, My (0 / 0)

mine is a very odd mix:

    1. Goodbye Earl - Dixie Chicks
    1. Through the morning, through the night -- Allison Kraus and Robert Plant
    1. I Melt With You -- Modern English
    1. I'm goin' home -- Hootie and the Blowfish
    1. The New Girl in Town -- Hairspray soundtrack
    1. I'll Fly Away -- Willie Nelson and Bobbie Nelson
    1. Brick House -- Commodores
    1. Love Me Do -- the Beatles
    1. You've Got a Friend -- James Taylor
    1. I've got to see you again -- Norah Jones

No telling what this says about me.

  • I Melt with You (0 / 0)

DH and I always considered that "our" song.  Now I see it on Taco Bell commercials and want to put my foot through the TV.

  • Too lazy for playlists (0 / 0)

It would require effort for me to actually go through my songs and organize them into even short lists.  But DS & I listen to my iPod on shuffle about six hours a day, so here's what's up next:

    1. Planet Earth - Duran Duran
    1. Over the Rainbow - Judy Garland
    1. Always - Ella Fitzgerald
    1. Speak Softly Love - Harry Connick Jr.
    1. It's All Over Now - Miss Peggy Lee
    1. Razzle Dazzle - Richard Gere & cast from "Chicago"
    1. Beyond the Sea - Bobby Darin
    1. Everybody Hurts - REM
    1. Silver Lining - David Gray
    1. Got My Own Thing Now - Squirrel Nut Zippers

Stuck in the 80s?  I think I'm stuck in the 50s!

  • um, i dont run (0 / 0)

  • Oh God, (0 / 0)

I'm so old and unhip...I don't even have an ipod.  Each of my kids has one...my husband has one.  Me?  Nah...

I love music, though.  Again, I'm really, really old...I have downloaded selections from Bach, Handel and Vivaldi.  I also have extensive collections of music from the Renaissance and the High Middle Age.  A lot of celtic selections, too.  I even have Gregorian chants, and a lot of choral pieces.

I do listen to some music that is a bit more contemporary...I love Pink Floyd..."Comfortably Numb" is perhaps one of my all time favorites.  Love the Beatles..."Hey Jude" possibly being my favorite.  And of course, the Rolling Stones (Ruby Tuesday).  Another selection that I'm frequently listening to is "Light My Fire".  A lot of 60's and 70's songs.  I like U2 as well...but that's about as recent as I go.

    • I just got mine (0 / 0)

at Christmas. I kept saying "I don't need an iPod; I will just listen to CDs" but I really do love it. I can stick it in my pocket when I'm cooking dinner and I can listen to whatever I want while the kids are goofing around or watching TV. And I really like the shuffle feature -- like having my own personal radio station.

Love all your contemporary music choices -- Hey Jude is one of my all-time favorites, too.

    • comfortably numb (0 / 0)

Ah, what a great song. When I'm just feeling soul-starved and tired out, I listen to that song. Love the van Morrison version as well.

    • Speaking of Hey Jude... (0 / 0)

Have you seen the video of the Korean baby singing the song??

    • asdf (0 / 0)

Totally off topic, but we just saw the move "Across the Universe" which used Beatles tunes to move the plot along. It's set in the era, and we felt it was very well done, including some of the news events and the feeling of the era. I enjoyed it tremendously. If you like the music, you'd like the movie.

I don't jog. My music is usually YouTube as I sit at the computer. I'll pick the best song by a favorite artist to bookmark, then when I'm in a mood for that artist, I'll use it as a jumping off point and just keep clicking on the "Related Videos" list in between working.

My Doors selections are "Spanish Caravan", "The Crystal Ship" and "Waiting for the Sun". Can that count as one?

      1. "Little Boxes" by Laurie Berkner, or Pete Seeger
      1. "(Nothing But) Flowers" Talking Heads
      1. "Are You Sitting Comfortably?" Moody Blues- there's this live version with a female flautist, really amazing. Wait, that's not especially upbeat, sorry. Substitute Dream Warriors, "Wash Your Face in My Sink"
      1. "No Sugar Tonight/New Mother Nature" The Guess Who
      1. "Love is the Seventh Wave" Sting
      1. "One Gun" 54-40
      1. "Big Hard Sun" by Indio or Eddie Vedder
      1. Led Zeppelin. Any and all.
      1. "Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes" Paul Simon. Most anything from Graceland or Rhythm of the Saints is high energy.

Bonus: "7 8 9" Barenaked Ladies (That's for the kiddies.)

Most of what I find myself choosing lately is folk music. Pete Seeger, Woody Guthrie, Malvina Reynolds, Stan Rogers, Steeleye Span, Tom Lehrer, John McCutcheon. Some recent, some very old. I listen to a lot of my 15 yo's more current stuff but I couldn't tell you more than the band names. (Nine Inch Nails, Tool, Disturbed, Rage Against the Machine, System of a Down)

  • Hmmmm... (0 / 0)

High energy music.  Like others, I could date or embarrass myself, but whatevs.

    More for Me-Tegan and Sara
    Fighter-Christina Agulara
    Hit the Road, Jack-Ray Charles
    Cream-Prince
Vyvienne Long's cover of Seven Nation Army
    My Doorbell-The White Stripes
Leslie King's cover of You Shook Me All Night Long, or the original
    Gold Lion-Yeah Yeah Yeahs

  • not even gonna bother... (0 / 0)

...getting the iPod.  Every time I do one of these threads, it all comes up Broadway.  I have a LOT of soundtracks on there.  And for some reason, my iPod seems to favor "Spring Awakening."

gloria, btw, did you go see Gypsy?  How was it???

  • Oooh...fun! (0 / 0)

    Here's my list:

    1. She Bangs by Ricky Martin
    1. Don't Stop The Rock by Freestyle
    1. You Can Do It by Ice Cube
    1. I Eat Cannibals by Toto Coelo
    1. Panama by Van Halen
    1. Heavy Must Be Missing an Angel by Tavares
    1. La Tortura by Shakira and Alejandro Sanz
    1. Rock You Like a Hurricane by the Scorpions
    1. Shell Shock by New Order
    1. Dress You Up by Madonna

Yeah, as you can tell I'm TOTALLY stuck in the 80's!!

    They rule!

  • Only NPR (0 / 0)

or books on tape when I run.

  • ah (0 / 0)

I'm trying to get in some sort of shape in the next 3 weeks for our 10 year college reunion.  Good luck!

Here's my ten, not in the order they appear but just a random sampling from the file "Songs I Might Run To" (key word is might):

    1. Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard, Paul Simon
    1. Send Me On My Way, Rusted Root
    1. Hey Julie, Fountains of Wayne
    1. Let's Kill Saturday Night, Robbie Fulks
    1.  Eat Steak, The Reverend Horton Heat
    1. Tootsie Roll, 69 Boyz
    1.  Ding Dong, Nellie McKay
    1.  The Fox, Nickel Creek
    1.  Momma Said Knock You Out, LL Cool J
    1.  Beauty Mark, Rufus Wainwright
    1. Bonus Track: Ballad of the Ramblin' MC, Matt Bar

Yes, I am also trapped in the 90s.  And other assorted randomness.

  • "I Run for Life" (0 / 0)

    by Melissa Etheridge.

Talk about giving you a sense of purpose while you run!

It's a blur since they told me about it
How the darkness had taken its toll
And they cut into my skin and they cut into my body
But they will never get a piece of my soul
And now I'm still learning the lesson
To awake when I hear the call
And if you ask me why I am still running
I'll tell you I run for us all

    I run for hope
    I run to feel
    I run for the truth
    For all that is real
I run for your mother your sister your wife
I run for you and me my friend
    I run for life

    • I play this while I'm spinning onmy trainer (0 / 0)

(can't wear ipods while on my bike on the road) or if I'm running on teh treadmill. since I have lost my mother, my sister and my friend it really rings true.

      • Oh, I am so sorry ... (0 / 0)

I lost a very dear friend two years ago to breast cancer. To lose three such close people ... I'm so sorry, MK.

I have this on my running iPod and it always has a compound effect on me ... it generates both tears and determination! It can be a bit hard to run when you're teary, but it feels cleansing as well.
