A friend encouraged me to check out Free Rice and I had to pass it on to you. It's an internet vocabulary-building game. Apparently, a father (and computer programmer) in PA was trying to help his son with vocabulary before taking the SATs. He developed this program but now it has come to serve 2 worthwhile purposes.

Provide English vocabulary to everyone for free.

Help end world hunger by providing rice to hungry people for free.

Advertisers on the site will donate 20 grains of rice to the UN World Food Program for every correct answer. I am not a gamer but this is addictive, educational and socially-conscious.

178,464,760 grains of rice donated yesterday.
Over 26 billion grains donated to date

Wow!!
I haven't found a down side and have already learned some new words.

I could sit here and do this ALL day! This is a great confidence builder, I never realized I would test this well in vocabulary.

My son is a terrible speller and I realized that knowing roots of words is key to good spelling and vocabulary. In my local paper there was a letter in the "Ask the Teacher" column and the parent wanted to know how her son could study for a Spelling Bee. The answer the teacher gave directed the parent to this set of books: Word Roots

Is anyone familiar with this book series? Is it good?

I was addicted for about a day. And then I got annoyed. The definitions are not always terribly accurate or descriptive... :) But it's a good cause.

I hadn't visited in a while. They've changed the algorithm a bit... I'm finding now that when I miss a word, they present it to me again a little later and give a second chance. I like it, helps me remember the word better.

One thing I need to learn is to STOP when I hit the 50 level, because there's nowhere to go but down!

  I spoke too soon. I've had to impose Free Rice restrictions on myself--difficult when you work on the computer all day and even more so when you can rationalize time spent playing the game by assuring yourself that you're also doing something good for humanity.
