Fitness and Training Diary w/o 14 April

Sun Apr 13, 2008 at 04:26:51 PM PDT

This is an open thread for those who are training for a race of any shape or kind. Post your training regime for this week and come back to report on your progress. Got a question on training, walking, running, biking, swimming or anything to do with race preparation? Post it here - someone will know the answer!

Ladies, in addition to the weekly round-up of intended activity, I need your help. My iPod playlist is feeling a tad tired and I need inspiration! What are your top three favs on your list - new music especially appreciated. I've got tons of Madonna, Scissor Sisters, Amy Winehouse, Springsteen, Rolling Stones, Pearl Jam etc., etc. Thanks!

  • my week (0 / 0)

    Week 3/12

Monday: Tempo Run - 5 mi, inc warm, 3 mi@10.46, cool
    Tues: Rest/xt
    Wed: Swimming with Jess
    Thurs: Long Run - 7 mi @ 12.25
    Fri: Rest/xt
    Sat: Easy Run - 2 mi@ 12.25
    Sun: Rest/xt

I felt proud of myself last week - I hit all my training runs, plus had two sessions at the gym on Friday and Sunday, so in all, I did things five days out of seven. Plus, Sunday afternoon, I took Jess for a 90 minute walk on her trike with a stop at the playground.

  • This has been and will continue to be (0 / 0)

the month of no regular routine for anything--family life, work life, travel life--it is all going to busy with nothing remotely resembling routine or regularity.

So, last week I simply set a goal of three yoga workouts.  Done.

    This week--three yoga workouts.

If I can do at least three yoga sessions a week for all of April, I'll be happy.

May--I will run again!  (If not sooner!)

    • setting achievable goals during chaotic times (0 / 0)

is a great thing. This is my downfall; I'm good at making regular exercise a priority when everything is going smoothly, especially when there's a goal in mind like a race, but if things go off the track, I get derailed easily.

      Good for you!!

  • Ummmmmm (0 / 0)

I haven't been posting in these for a while. I ran my 5K on Thanksgiving, and have only run once or twice since then.

I was hoping to pick it back up again -- I live in the greater Chicagoland area, and winter was too snowy or icy or muddy for my neighborhood/trail runs.

Then I found out that I was expecting in October. I had an okay to run carefully, but didn't have the energy.

Well, I found out why, and I think running is going to be out for a while.... turns out that there's a set of identical twins in there, and that's where all my energy has been going!

So, ladies -- keep at it! After seeing the guidelines for how much weight I'm supposed to be putting on (to give you an idea, I should be up about 25lbs by 20 weeks, and I was down about 5 (below pre-preg) at 12 weeks) -- I'm going to need to be getting back in here no later than this time next year, and hopefully sooner!

  • I'm hoping (0 / 0)

to go on a community trail ride in a couple of weeks with my pony, but I'm not sure if she'll be fit enough. The weather has been lovely - maybe too lovely; we could use more rain - so I've been outside and riding and working and getting a lot done.

Next weekend, my Dad and I were going to go hiking in the Jackson State Demonstration Forest, which is celebrating something or other that I've forgotten. And then there's a 5k walk/run in our neighborhood on Sunday. I was wondering if the kid and I were up for a 5k walk. Still thinking about it.

  • We're back! (0 / 0)

We had a week's holiday at Rottnest Island...just lovely. Lots of biking around (there are no cars), going to the beach, chasing quokkas, and generally having a great time. But I didn't run. At all. Not once. So I think it's back to the beginning of the couch to 5K with me!

Here's a question...I'm having trouble scheduling my runs since the time change happened. We were doing evening runs after the kids had dinner, but now it's dark then. I just can't see myself managing a morning run. I'm just not the type. And because of other scheduling things, it looks like Tuesday and Thursday are my days to attempt a run...but those are also my days for yoga and pilates (and I can't change the schedule of the gym!). Should I just do all the workouts on the same days, or should I work harder to find a solution for running on the other days?

    • duh. scroll down is my friend (0 / 0)

Hmm... interesting question. I find that at times like this, it's often better to combine running with another activity. How far is your gym from your house? Is it feasible to run there and then take public transport back?

Can you combine the run with a visit to the park? I often pop Jess into the jogging pram and run to a park nearby.

  • So, I've been doing... (0 / 0)

my nightly walks around the neighborhood. Tomorrow, I'm planning on finally going on a 2-3 mile run. I've been feeling REALLY great lately, and I want this feeling to continue!!

    Now, regarding your ipod...

My taste are a bit random, but the ones that get me going are Erasure, New Order, a Beautiful Day by U2, and some Spanish songs, like La Vida es un Carnaval, and La Negra tiene Tumbao, by Celia Cruz. Don't bring me down by ELO, I Ran by a Flock of Seagulls, What You Waiting For? by Gwen Stefani, Don't Stop Believing, and Separate Ways by Journey, Mental Hopscotch by Missing Persons...my list can go on and on! Talk about energizing!!

  • my week/iPod (0 / 0)

Okay, just two weeks 'til the half marathon.

Yesterday we did our last long run, about twelve miles.  Having just gotten my period on Friday I was feeling pretty sluggish, but we gutted it out.

This morning I was going to cross train, but I blew the alarm. Oh well.

So, I'll run three tomorrow, hopefully four on Wednesday and five on Friday.  Then I've got a 5K on Sunday.  Now that is going to be fun.  My friend found this 5K where you actually run THROUGH the Lincoln Tunnel!  To make it a fun and special event, we're going into the city on Saturday and will shop and eat and then get up Sunday morning and take the shuttle to the race start in NJ.

Then, next week -- TAPER BABY!

    • Oh, the iPod thing (0 / 0)

Now that US races sanctioned by the big governing body have banned headphones all together, I've been training less with my iPod.  I'm trying not to rely on the music for inspiration.

It sucks, I love my music. But what good will it do if I can't crank the tunes on race day?

      • Why (0 / 0)

would they ban music? I love my music too, and don't think I can get ANYTHING done, without my music!

        • safety (0 / 0)

It's safety concerns.  I think it's totally whack, myself, but here's the info:

USA Track & Field, the national governing body for running, this year banned the use of headphones and portable audio players like iPods at its official races. The new rule was created to ensure safety and to prevent runners from having a competitive edge.

Here's the full NYT story from November.

          • I really don't (0 / 0)

understand how safety could be an issue. I mean, it'll be different if you were running alone, on the side of the road...then, I could understand. In that event, you won't be able to hear traffic, honking, or an ambulance. But when it's a race kind of situation, the streets are closed! Makes no sense. Personally, I think its to "prevent runners from having a competetive edge"; which is total bullshit, if you ask me!

          • Thanks for the link (0 / 0)

I thought this made more sense than the other things.

Jill Geer, spokeswoman for USA Track & Field, said the ban was "basically an insurance issue," because rates rise substantially if headphones are allowed. Each sanctioned race receives liability insurance from USA Track & Field, and it would be up to each race director to enforce the ban. If the ban were ignored, the races would be liable in the event of an accident caused by someone using headphones, Geer said.

I also liked in the article how somebody said he hit the wall 20 mi into a marathon and someone on the street leaned out a window and played the "Rocky" theme and it gave him the energy to go on.

        • I wouldn't run a race (0 / 0)

if they banned iPods. Seriously, much as I love to do them, I NEED music to get through them.

          I'm such a diva. ;-)

      • yucky (0 / 0)

I totally rely on music to get me through! I'm wary of using the headphones when it's race day, so I usually just turn the volume very low (I like to hear what's going on in case someone's coming through quick and I have to get out of the way). It's such a bean-counter-y solution to the problem, though.

Y'all will have to come and do races here in Australia - we still permit the headphones!!

  • My week (a school holiday week) (0 / 0)

Sunday: I did my lower body series and some housework. DP did her step exercises. DSD was supposed to use the bike at her dad's - not sure whether that happened. We saw DP off on a business trip and then went to Krispy Kreme on the way home and this morning I am up a kilo I hope mostly from the water sticking to the sugar. Constant vigilance!

Monday: Nothing much - except maybe eating a bit better.

Tuesday: We'll go to the gym as soon as DSD is awake and functional. Evening: DP comes back (it was a short trip).

Weds: DSD and DP see their personal trainers and I will do my upper body series and cardio while they're doing that. (We decided they needed the trainers more than I do - but I have to make sure to attend lots of classes etc.)

Thursday: Long walk around downtown while DP is working there, maybe a massage and a few job applications.

    Friday: Pilates class.

Saturday: DP will want to go for a swim; I will drive her and try to do something while she is swimming.

Sunday: There is a very strenuous 5 hour group bushwalk - I'm not sure whether I can get the time "off" (family duties) and whether I could make the 5 hours. Thinking about it though!

I can see that I need to get on top of planning!

  • Who cares? (0 / 0)
