obama mama... even on a day like today.

Sat Apr 12, 2008 at 08:18:20 PM PDT

Editor's note: I'm a sucker for candidate-with-kid photos...check out the amazing ones after the jump!

ugggh... another day of news bashing.  i will admit, i did not like the word choice he used... particularly his use of the word "cling".  but the contention that republicans have wooed people to vote on issues that do not drastically improve their daily lives is a sound one.  ok... that's all i'll say on that.

on to me... obama mama!  two weeks ago, MSNBC host chris matthews started his college tour at the university where i teach.  his guest?  barack obama.  we were notified just a few days ahead of time, faculty/staff/student tix only.  i waited in line with my two youngest (8 mos. and 2 years) on a cold rainy day for the better part of two hours.  i got a ticket and a colleague was able to get some for both my 9 year old son and my mom (both huge obama and hardball fans).  we got in line early on the day of the show, got great seats, tons of freebies (to my son's sheer joy) and even met chris matthews on the way to the loo (picture after the jump).

obama was great, handled the "tee-ball" questions like a pro.  he discussed several issues well, but hearing his thoughts on urban early childhood education was my personal hook. it was good to see him up close and hear him talk for the better part of an hour (and graciously shake hands, pose for pictures, and sign autographs for the students).  as obamaites and political junkies, we were in heaven.

or so i thought.

this week, my husband calls as i am in the preschool carpool line to pick up my four year old.  it's naptime, i am READY for one myself, but he has a tip from a pharmacist friend that obama will be stopping by his grocery store at 4pm.  we have 45 minutes for a 35 minute drive, so we go!  (me and my three tired young kids).  we get there with time to spare (mostly because candidates are always late, except apparently for a live taping of the chris matthews show).  we waited outside for a bit, but the kids were getting antsy (to put it kindly), so i went inside... i saw our pharmacist friend and chatted with him at the front of the store.  well... guess which door he entered?  and guess who were the only people (aside from the press) right there, waiting for him? it was the perfect spot.

he walks in, grabs a basket (which i assumed was just for show, but he actually bought groceries).  and then he heads right over to us.  so... do i say anything of import or ask any intelligent question, or even just say "you got my vote".  anything substantive?  no.  i am a mama only in this moment.  there is no me.  i introduce the kids, i juggle the baby in one hand and try to take pictures with my iphone in the other (while it rings, of course).  all i can think about is how great it is for maya to be meeting this man she's been cheering for.  literally.  just a few days before, she came home and reported, "mom, me and becka were cheering for obama in the block corner".  ok, i've worked around young kids my whole life... political rallies are a rarity in the block corner.  maya and her big bro really look up to obama, and their little brother loves to shout "yes we can".  i wish i'd at least told obama about the cheering in the block corner.  i wish i'd have said just one semi-intelligent, non-mom in the grocery store kind of thing, but i just smiled and tried to record the moment.  (my mom has since found wonderful pictures on the web taken by a real photographer... the only problem is the pushy mom with her iphone, being thwarted by the secret service, is blocking some of the shots).

and my iphone shot, which fuzzy as it is (thanks secret service guy), captures her sheer admiration better than the clear one above...

he was so calm.  so kind.  and so relaxed.  he was in no rush at all.  very sweet with the kids, but especially maya.  he asked her name, and then shared that his sister's name is maya too.  possibly the best thing he could've told her!  he shook hands and patted the baby's head, chatted with maya a bit, and then moved on.  i couldn't believe how lucky we were.  he was mobbed from that point on.  people cheering and chatting and using their phones to record it all.  well, we joined the mob at the exit and waited to sneak one last wave.  i had the baby, and i figured i'd actually try to shake his hand myself this time. i did get to shake it, but the best part was when he looked behind me as he left the store and said... "goodbye maya".  he remembered her name.  she SWOONED!

so, if you were looking for a deep political analysis of campaign issues, i'm afraid this isn't the right spot.  i just wanted to celebrate our family's excitement meeting the man i hope will be our next president.  even on a day like today.

Your kids are adorable, and frankly, so is Obama.  Time to go shopping for some nice picture frames!

  • fantastic! (0 / 0)

I think you performed admirably under the crazy circumstances.  Maya will never forget the day!!!

  • This is what's so amazing about this campaign. (0 / 0)

It seems like our kids are more aware than ever before.  I don't know why, but I can't help thinking that this wicked primary season has been a gift to them that will pay off for decades.

    And your kids are adorable.

    • thanks, and i agree... (0 / 0)

(well, about the adorable kids too, of course), but even though sammy has always been very involved in current events and politics for a kid his age, this time is different.  i too hope the impact lasts.

Your story just made my crush even worse!

  • I love this. Political rallies in the (0 / 0)

block corner.  You've got great kids.  Thanks for sharing the pictures.

  • It just occured to me that I "know" you (0 / 0)

from another site(Maya is an April 2003 kid,no?),had often wondered what you all have been up to since baby #4 arrived, and lo and behold you are right here and I never made the connection...too funny. We are Obama supporters as well,Carter loves to tell my MIL "my Momma's for Obama",which is fabulous because I'm glad he is interested in learning about the job of President, how he or she is elected and why his Mom and Dad decided to vote for Barack Obama and more importantly, it drives my very Republican in-laws nuts,I'm a girl with her priorities in order. I'm jealous you had such I close encounter,I took Carter and Cami(who's 1) to the rally in Dallas earlier in the year and we had a great time but never got anywhere close en0ugh for a photo op.Your kids are adorable as always,I can't believe how big Sam is and Maya looks like she is full of life and too much fun.

    • hey i know you too! (0 / 0)

thanks for saying hi!  sounds like your kids are doing great, challenging the in-laws and all.  can you believe we have (or i will in another week) FIVE year olds? happy birthday to your flower!  i was just showing maya her new sneaks i got on sale, telling her we'd save them for kindergarten, and i almost lost it.  seems like she's been here forever, but the idea of her going to school?  waaaah.  she is a hoot... i can barely get her to greet her preschool teacher in the morning, but when she met faith ringgold and now barack obama, she was all smiles and totally confident.

and yes... i've been off board for awhile.  having 4 has forced me to focus my computer time very narrowly.  and then when i visit, i lurk since i can't reply to enough posts.  as a SAHM now, i am trying hard to find sites that stretch my brain, cause it is s.h.r.i.n.k.i.n.g.!
