Fitness and training diary w/o Mar 31

Sun Mar 30, 2008 at 10:59:07 PM PDT

This is an open thread for those who are training for a race of any shape or kind. Post your training regime for this week and come back to report on your progress. Got a question on training, walking, running, biking, swimming or anything to do with race preparation? Post it here - someone will know the answer!

Sorry about skipping last week, ladies. I just got lost in the holiday timing! Hope you all had a good week.

In my news, I've decided to gear up for another half marathon. I'm really hoping that I'll have good news in the Baby 2.0 department, but until then, I'm going to train for the Run Melbourne half marathon, Sunday June 22. My target is modest: another 5 minute improvement over my last race, so a 2h20 minute marathon. That would be a personal record (PR), but it's also a modest goal. I'm also hoping to use the training as a chance to vamoose 10lbs. I'm still carrying this weight and I'm hoping that working it off will also put me in a healther physical state for conception.

What's going on with you-all? Hillary, when is your half marathon?

  • my week (0 / 0)

so, this is Week One of the training week. Unlike previous training periods, I've geared my weeks around a Thursday long run (DH last time complained that my long runs on Sundays were cutting into "his" time too much. I think that's BS, but hey, life is about compromise, and this is not a biggie).

    Mon: gym - bike, freeweights
Tues: tempo run: 5 mi, inc. warm, 3mi@9.45, cool.
    Wed: Rest/XT (swimming with Jess)
    Thurs: long run - 6 mi@12:25
    Fri rest/xt
    Sat: easy run - 2mi @12.25
    Sun: rest/xt

    Total: 13 miles.

  • I'm feeling really good. (0 / 0)

I've joined a gym that has a great creche and lots of pilates, yoga, body balance sort of classes. I'm aiming for two classes a week. Plus this running thing that we're doing (week three of the couch to 5K plan!). Of course, it's pouring down rain this week...must learn to run in the cold rain, since we've got some months of that. Any tips, rainy winter people?

I'm feeling strong, engergetic, and generally good. I really should have done this sooner...

    • great stuff, C! (0 / 0)

I'll  bet the kids really get a kick out of the creche, too. Jess loves it. She also really loves running up to me, burying her nose in my shirt and yelling, "Mummy, you stink! Go have a shower!"

Re: running in cold rain? It's either Just Do It, or learn to love the treadmill. Sorry...

  • Last week (0 / 0)

was my best week in months!  LOL.  I joined a gym (curves) , ran a half mile on the days I didn't go (gm on Monday, run on Tues, Gym on Wednesday, run on Thurs, gym on Friday) and did 52 floors of stairs carrying a 14lb baby on my back in the American Lung Association Climb  California Fundraiser.

    Yesterday, I rested.

This week I'm starting my couch to 5k plan(had to wait till the start of the month...I'm REALLY anal about that) and starting a food diary.

Monday:  Bellydance DVD, arm weights, curves
Tuesday: 20 minute run (as per c-to-5k guidelines)
    Wednesday:  curves
Tuesday: 20 minute run (as per c-to-5k guidelines)
Friday:  sleep (we're driving to Los Angeles) and lat night 20 minute run (as per c-to-5k guidelines)
    Saturday: Curves with my mom
Sunday: Run 1/2 mile in the morning.

BTW, any help with keeping track of the time in the couch-to-5k program?

  • I'm so discouraged (0 / 0)

I was having so much back pain that I decided to stop running and dedicate myself to walking and strengthening my core.  But it's not the same.  I hated running but I felt so good about it at the same time.  I strongly favor yoga over pilates but pilates seems better for the core.

    • did you check with the trainer (0 / 0)

or with your doctor to see the source of the back pain? Maybe it's your gait or your shoes and it's something that can be adjusted. I'd hate to see you stop doing something that resulted in positive ends!

I'm glad you're doing yoga and walking - it's really good that you're keeping active!

      • I need to go (0 / 0)

I just have this idea that doctors don't understand backs.  With my first bout of back pain I went and he gave me some pills.  Also, I have this idea that I'm a heroin addict, although I have never tried heroin.  So I would have a very hard time turning down an opiate if offered, but I'm scared of becoming addicted.

Maybe I could get a referral for physical therapy or a chiropractor, though.

        • I'd recommend doing it (0 / 0)

with two youngsters that you love to cuddle and carry, and an active life, it's worth getting the back pain sorted! You won't know if your doctor will only prescribe meds until you have the appointment, and I would definitely ask for that referral!

    • are you sure? (0 / 0)

I'm partial to Pilates, myself, but it seems to me that the yoga classes I've taken have been plenty good for the core.  It's so important for motivation to do something you actually like.... I would say don't give up the yoga if you love it!  All those stabilizing muscles you have to use -- those are core, right?  And sorry about the running.  I know the love/hate thing -- I feel so proud of myself if I run, even though it's not right for my body.

      • This sounds so weird (0 / 0)

but for a year or more I took yoga away from myself as a punishment!  I told myself I couldn't do anything but cardio until I lost weight.  What a simp--also, it didn't work.

I'm not sure about the yoga vs. pilates thing at all.  I do both, usually whatever is scheduled at a good time for me on a particular day.

  • I've been active (0 / 0)

Riding and doing all kinds of great stuff outside. But I clearly need to do more. I ordered one of those exercise balls yesterday, which I hope will help me work on some more core stability. I hope I ordered the right size, and I hope I can get in the habit of using it, so it doesn't just become clutter.

DH took a lovely picture of me and the pony working the other day. The pony looks great - her training is coming along nicely - but I definitely need to lose a little weight.

I already made myself a rule that I try to do some sort of exercise if I stop and watch any TV - but that doesn't help, because I don't have time for TV anyway!

  • I"ve been eating all the Easter Chocolate (0 / 0)

and drinking a lot of beer.  And...I am very ashamed of myself.

  • Still trying to get back on the exercise wagon (0 / 0)

My sinus infection a few weeks ago really threw my workout routine for a loop.  That was followed by end-of-quarter grading and a visit from my mom--lots of excuses not to do anything.  Been carrying my running stuff with me in the car, but haven't been bold enough to get my run on again.  This is what I'd like to get in this week--at least one run and at least two yoga sessions.  This is, of course, complicated by the wedding we're going to this weekend.
