  • my week (0 / 0)

finally made it to the gym yesterday. Whoo hoo!

    Tues: run - 1 hr, 4-6 miles
    Wed: swim w/ Jess
    Thurs: run - 1 hr, 4-6 miles
Fri: easy run - 2-4 miles
Sat: long run - 6-8 miles
    Sun: gym - free weights

  • haven't weighed myself.. (0 / 0)

in several months...due to laziness.  my scales needs a new battery.  but i have been exercising...alot.  weekly exercise includes two 90 minute hikes in the steep hills around our house, two 45 minute to hour hikes, 3 weight workout days. i got on the scale last week when even my smaller clothes felt roomy and discovered i have lost 8 pounds.

question for those who might know.  when i do the weight workout i start with a stenuous treadmill pace of 15 minutes, wait 10 minutes and then start lifting.  a colleague at work told me i should reverse that process.  weights first and then the 15 minute cardio spurt.  has anyone heard of this kind of strategy? she says it helps burn more calories.

    • I haven't heard of that (0 / 0)

but my biggest concern would be making sure I'm properly warmed up for the lifting. When I've done serious weight-training in the past, it was always about building up strength (to help avoid injuries, etc.) not burning calories.  If you go into weightlifting with cold muscles, I believe there's a greater likelihood that you could injure yourself during the lifting.  Is there someone at the gym you can consult?  A trainer?

      • personal preferecne (0 / 0)

Like MK, I prefer to warm up with cardio and then do weightlifting. It does get me ready for a good weights session. I have tried it in the reverse, and frankly, no go for me. I'm sore after lifting weights and in no mood for cardio. But this is just personal preference speaking; you're best asking a trainer, as MK suggested!

    • BTW (0 / 0)

All that hiking sounds delightful.  You are so fortunate to be able to do that!

    • It's been about a year, but (0 / 0)

an instructor told me to do a cardio warm-up (10 mins or so), then weights and then 15+ minutes of serious cardio for general fitness. Mind you, I wasn't exercising specifically to burn off calories or lose weight. Like others here, I would be worried about muscle injuries if I did the weights without a good warm-up.

      Just my 2 cents.

Oh, and I haven't exercised forever - just have a hard time finding the time to do it - and now I'm almost 34 weeks pregnant, so I'm not exactly getting more mobile.... Oh well, I console myself with the fact that I cycle 20 minutes each way to work 4 times per week. But that's why I don't generally contribute here...

    • thanks all.. (0 / 0)

think i will stick with my cardio first then weights.  i just got back from business trip and i never seem to be able to squeeze in exercise and i also don't eat well. I was in portland and it was just beautiful.  i do love that city.
  • My week (0 / 0)

    Run Monday, Wednesday, Friday.
    Yoga Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday.

I'm still taking it easy with the runs--never more than 30 minutes, especially since last week I went a bit too far on one stride and pulled something in my hip.  I did a 25 minute walk/run today and some simple yoga stretches yesterday.  This confirms that the running/yoga alternation is necessary.

  • I got the ok to start running again! (0 / 0)

YAY!  I realized last night just how much I missed that buzz...  I also found somebody else who really likes to workout at night, so I have a new PM track buddy!

Anyway, I did 3 miles last night at 3/1 run/walk intervals and walked another mile and a half.  I'll probably do the same Tues, Wed & Sat night, walk 1 1/2 miles for school pick up every day, and I'll probably walk some Tues/Fri mornings, but I'm not sure how far.

I need to add some strength training back in.  I've been very lax there.

  • And another thing... (0 / 0)

I joined a challenge to run/walk/whatever for 100 miles between Jan 1 and April 1.  I finally updated tracking it on mapmyrun, and I was shocked to see that I'm already just shy of 90 miles!!!

  • What's on your iPod when you run? (0 / 0)

I'm looking for some good new tunes to put on my Shuffle!

A few that are on mine: Unwritten by Natasha Bedingfield, One Tree Hill by U2, Burning in the Sun by Blue Merle, Hard Sun by Eddie Vedder, and for the ultimate in running inspiration: I Run for Life by Melissa Etheridge. (Of course it's hard to run while you cry, but it works for me!)

    • Hard Sun!! (0 / 0)

I love that song sooooo much. Did you download the whole album? I did and there are some great instrumental bits for long runs. Perfect!

My iPod selection is either dance music or Rock 'n' Roll, with a few exceptions, like Amy Winehouse and Velvet Underground. Best purchase recently - Kanye West - "Stronger", the one with Daft Punk. Great beat.

    • music (0 / 0)

My iPod is heavy on high energy dance music, like Gwen Stefani and Erasure. Lots of No Doubt, too.

My latest fave is "Don't Stop the Music" by Rihanna. "Stronger" by Kanye is great. "Work It" by Missy Elliott motivates me.

My cheesiest selection for those long, tiring runs? "Don't Stop Believin'" by Journey. Puts a smile on my face and a spring in my step every time.

  • Okay...here goes... (0 / 0)

I've looked up the couch to 5K plan. We start on their plan in a couple of weeks. We're working on the bed to 5K plan. That involves two weeks of brisk walking to build up to breaking into a jog. :) We've signed up for the City to Surf run in August. eek!

    My week:
Monday-nada, public holiday so no yoga
Tuesday (oh god that's today)- 30 minutes of walking on the coast road
Wednesday- contemplate how nuts this idea is
    Thursday- 30 minutes of walking
    Friday- large amounts of wine
    Saturday- 30 minutes of walking
    Sunday- prepare for another week

Just so you know...even on the days when I'm not setting aside specific time for a workout...I'm doing constant weightlifting of my 10 kilo son. And chasing my two running children. Who never stop. Ever.

    Wish me luck...

  • I am finally back to running every other day! (0 / 0)

My goal is to run five miles straight, every other day, for an average of 20 miles a week! (That way I figure I can pretty much eat what I want without expanding too much! How's that for motivation?!).

I'm up to 3.3 miles per run. Tomorrow I'll bump it up to about 3.75 miles. I try to increase by about 10 percent a week.

I'm planning on running a 5K on Mother's Day, which should be a breeze by then if I keep up the regimen. Not to mention that nice Mother's Day brunch!

  • Acid Reflux... (0 / 0)

I am a pretty overweight woman, but I am currently working on it.  I try to get to the gym 5 days a week, and do a mix of cardio stuff and weights.  When I workout, I workout hard.  As in I am sweating every where and dead tired at the end...but tired in a good way.

Anyway, ever since I really started to step up my cardio in the last week or so, I have gotten really bad acid reflux.  I haven't changed my diet, so I am wondering if this is somehow related to working out?  Has anyone else experienced this?

  • Well, I'm working (0 / 0)

Sun: pushed jogger over 2 miles of hills
    Mon: Rested
    Tues: elliptical and arm weights
    Wed: belly-video
    Thurs: biking 9 miles roundtrip
    Fri: my run
    Sat: probably elliptical
    Sun: resting

I also started grad school on Saturday (a second BA and a teaching credential is grad-school, right?).

However, I've gained 6 lbs in the last 4 or 5 weeks...eating the same and working my butt off.  What gives?
