Socially concious spring cleaning

Fri Mar 28, 2008 at 10:10:35 AM PDT

So, as a native Floridian, I am immune to most of your Northern-centric passages of time. You all call them "seasons" and look for things like frost on pumpkins or different color leaves. Around here we look to see when the British tourists have turned from a pasty white to a more vibrant Lobster-red to tell when summer is over. Fall is denoted by clearance prices on beach towels, winter is that day when you get to wear a sweater, and spring, ah, spring. A semi-mythical season whose presence is noted by a few days of light green leaves, no sweater, and for me an irresistible urge to get things done around the house.

Thank goodness it only lasts about a week!

Yesterday I took a good hard look at my kitchen, and then I sat down to read for a few hours. Then I looked at the kitchen again; no discernible change. I sighed and put down my book. After doing the dishes and making some half hearted swipes at the crumbs on the stove I decided real, actual, "organize while you go cleaning" was in order. I began in the pantry.

There I immediately noticed (after 3 weeks of the shelf no longer sliding in and out) that the shelf was broken. The big shelf, where I keep the cereal, and the granola bars, and the oatmeal and the wheat germ. After emptying it I realized it had come off the track, bent the wheel and was hanging very precipitously. Apparently all that fiber will kill you.

I banged the wheel back into place with my meat tenderizer (or as I call it, the kitchen hammer)slid the shelf back in and reloaded it with only the cereal boxes. Clearing these out I realized I had doubles of many packages, probably at the cereal two for one that happens weekly at my grocery store. (I suspect this sale is underwritten by the milk company).

We had extra Raisin Bran. I am the only person in my house who does not believe, deep in their soul, that Raisin Bran is poison. So I put those in a (reusable!) shopping bag for church. Then I realized we had several types of hot cocoa. These orphan bags of sugary ersatz chocolate substance were combined into a single box. Perhaps unwittingly my husband will now drink some of the "No Sugar Added" but somehow I doubt it. I made some for Darling Girl and returned to work. Next I discovered some instant mix lemonade, I product I would not usually countenance except I bought it during a weird pregnancy craving in my first trimester. "The "anything that will stay down' months... I made a pitcher and put it in the fridge and recycled the empty can. I was starting to feel pretty good!

Extra vinegar, in the bag! Two bags of red beans? One for the church! Who needs this much rice?! And so on, combining open packets, pulling things for dinner, dumping old stuff, and recycling everything I could. I found enough stuff to make a REALLY nice dinner in my pantry and freezer, and didn't have to go to the store, as I had planned to earlier. So I saved money! And I have a huge sack of food for the church food bank, yay!

I felt so amazing I even tackled the dreaded dining room closet! I won't go on and on, but let me tell you one thing. It is WAAAAY easier to live up to your commitment that THIS will be the year you use the cloth napkins when they are all (47 of them!!) in a big basket on an organized shelf. I even found a box of conventional cleaning products that I will now use up as I switch over to more environmentally friendly products.

So I can't be the only one that uses "Not-as-Hot", uh, I mean "spring" to make a fresh start. What are you all up to? Any suggestions for me? Today I got the laundry room organized and last weekend I installed a retractable clothesline on my balcony! Have you got Spring Fever too?

  • Something I REALLY need to do (0 / 0)

The great thing about a spring baby (I'm due 4/24) is that my nesting instinct is kicking in at the right time! DS's smudged finger prints all over the sliding glass door, spots on the carpet, dust on the mouldings, cob webs, crud in the oven, etc, all of which NEVER would normally bother me suddenly do! Have I done anything about it? No, but I will. I will confess to cleaning out my fridge two weeks ago. I got tired of looking at the half open jars of stuff in there that have been hanging around since who knows when. And I dusted out kitchen light fixtures b/c they were realy dirtry. And I confess, it felt great!

I don't normally do a big spring cleaning, but we will be this year as we will also be moving. And let me tell you, last time we did it (when we moved 2 years ago), we donated lots of stuff to charity, tossed stuff no longer useful, and organized our things better. It is amazing what is lurking in the back of closets, drawers, cabinets, etc. I remember coming across a few things and thinking, oh so that is where that went! We have a few of DS's toys that have gone MIA and I bet we will find them when we are packing.

We just moved and I'm due late April, and so poor DH has had to deal with the nesting/hormonal/physically challenged wife trifecta which is really quite brutal, I imagine.  But we have made active "keep/donate/trash" decisions on every item that we own, and have unpacked and handled 90% of our stuff.  The rest we'll do next week after the bookshelves go in.  It feels so good to know what we have, and where it is!  There have been many trips to drop off unneeded stuff, and we have slowly been eating our way through the huge inventory we had in our freakishly large pantry at the last place.

Next question is, how long can we maintain this?  All the way until next spring seems like a stretch.

  • Congrats on your Spring Baby! (0 / 0)

My husband and I are both Aries, March and April babies, so I am partial to them. :)

I love having a clean house, I just wish I loved cleaning too! Also, if you do find any of the kids toys, I'd be sure to send those straight to Goodwill, if they haven't missed them by now...right?

  • We got four more inches of snow today (0 / 0)

it's now the second snowiest NH winter EVER.  Liza had her SEVENTH snow day today.

spring huH? clean what?  you gotta be kidding...we're still spreading salt on the steps and tracking in slush

  • This year is a first (0 / 0)

Last year I would have voted "Spring what?" but this year we're cleaning tons of junk out of our basement (the eternal dumping ground that you couldn't walk through a month ago. I'm in "pitch and ditch" mode. I want all of this crap we don't use out of our house!

Wed night we got rid of 6 large shelves worth of stuff that we don't need any more.

We're putting up curtains on the new rods that we bought a couple of weeks ago.

Just last weekend I cleaned off two of the pantry shelves.

In April there's going to be two e-waste recycling events so I hope to unload all of our old electronics, etc then.

In May our neighborhood is having it's Spring Cleaning event where you can unload a truck of your junk for $30 and it's a fund raiser for our neighborhood organization.

By the time we're planting our garden I want to be able to walk through my basement!

That's my goal... and rant... :)

  • Wow! (0 / 0)

Sorry to MKatherine on the snow... my family went on vacation in NC last year on purpose just to see snow; it seems widly exotic to me! I bet I'd be tired of it by snow day 7 though... we do sometimes get hurricane days here, but those are more terrifying than bothersome, :).

And Jakyra, you have a LOT of energy. You can also sometimes get rid of old electronics on www.freecycle.com I know a guy who is forever in need of old computer parts because he fixes them up for local schools and donates them, and he gets his stuff there.

    • Thanks for the tip! (n/t) (0 / 0)

    • you went to NORTH CAROLINA (0 / 0)

to see snow????   honey...that ain't snow.

this wasn't her seventh snow day in arow -- but the 7th  since thanksgiving in addition to about a 1/2 dozen delays.   It started snowing Thanksgiving weekend and it pretty much hasn't stopped since then.  I pride myself on being a lifelong new englander and never complaining about snow ...but this is done even me in.

      • It was snow-like! (0 / 0)

We sledded, we even made a (rather short) snowman...but I do get your point. I have friends from Wisconsin and Illinois, they have told me stories about having their eyelashes freeze off at the bus stop! Yikes!

  • It is snowing in Seattle! (0 / 0)

Right this very minute as I look out my window, it is snowing.  I live north of the city so I am not sure what it is doing there but still....

...it never snows this time of year.

    • Just plain wrong (0 / 0)

I'm very disturbed by the whole thing.  I love the few snow days we occasionally have in December, January, and occasionally even February, but there is something wrong with snow in the northwest after the first of spring.

  • Well...our plan (0 / 0)

is to paint the whole downstairs, put knew flooring down, re-do the downstairs bathroom and do an overall revamping of the kitchen, family room and dining room.  Now, we're doing this all on our on, which means, in effect, that my husband is doing it as I'm not able to do much besides pick out what I want.  So far, we've got the kitchen re-painted and the new flooring bought.  Hopefully, next week, my husband can get the family room painted.  I've realized that this "spring cleaning" quite possibly take us several months to complete!  It doesn't help that we keep getting distractions...day before yesterday, my daughter had a car accident, so I know that a good part of next week my husband's time will be consumed with helping her get all of that straightened out.

    Always something.

  • I had to vote (0 / 0)

for "male dominated society's seasonal undermining of women's rights."  Just 'cause it made me giggle.

But really, spring cleaning makes a good deal of sense.  Suddenly the sun shines light on dust and grime you didn't see in the winter.  So I guess it's, groan...a lovely ritual of hearth and home. I cannot emphasize enough how much I hate to admit that.

Like your shelf, the top shelf to my large lazy susan cabinet is starting to break.  Where do you even find a replacement for such a thing?

    • Do you know the manufacturer of your cabinets? (0 / 0)

If its like "craftmaid" or something you can order a replacement part, but even if it you don't know, you can just take measurements to your local home center and get a new one.

  • Organizational binge (0 / 0)

I really struggle with Jan & Feb.  It's just too dark and too cold (yeah, I'm in GA, whatever, no laughing!) and I'm in full hibernation mode.  But in the past month, I've gotten SO. MUCH. DONE.  Our living room is exploding with stuff to be donated to Salvation Army and I've only got one more closet to tackle, and the laundry room left.  It's fantastic.

I think the way seasons work for me is along the lines of:
Summer: kids home destroying things/safer to spend the day at the pool; worry about house stuff later
Fall: adjusting to new schedule and new school chaos; worry about house stuff later
Winter:  too cold/too dark, watch a movie on the sofa under a blanket and worry about house stuff later
Spring: cram a year's worth of work into a month or two and entertain a lot before it all falls apart again

  • going into the autumn clean (0 / 0)

As I've often said, I'm not big on cleaning, but I like a clean house. Sad. I'm always slightly irritated at the house - either because I have to clean or because it needs to be clean. I'ts like being a dog constantly on the wrong side of the door!

Anyway, I'm just about to go into the autumn clean here; I like to re-organize the closets and have a good pitch-out every six months or so. It's pretty easy to do the clothes and toys bit because I switch the wardrobe around (bring the sweaters out of the plastic bins on our shelves, put the shorts and tank tops back in). I love the feeling of putting the bags of gently used things into the charity bins!

I'm also really religious about cleaning out my files and organizing my paperwork; I hate the idea of being overwhelmed by clutter, particularly around tax time.

    • That's me (0 / 0)

A slob who hates a mess.  My mood and my patience with the kids and personal contentment are totally dependent on a clean house, which I can achieve maybe once a week.

      • that's hilarious! (0 / 0)

A slob who hates a mess.

that's my husband, and he's admitted that much, but never so succinctly and perfectly.

      • love that (0 / 0)

I'll have to remember that one. The only surefire answer is a cleaning service. I'm holding out until I get pregnant with number 2; I figure by the time I'm 6 months or so along, I can pick up a cleaning service and really enjoy the extra time.

        • On my list (0 / 0)

for when I go back to work.  Whoever cleans my house will get so much respect!  I will make sure they know that they are doing something that I simply cannot do, not unlike if I went to the doctor for brain surgery.  Well, I probably wouldn't be as obsequious with my neurosurgeon as I plan on being with whoever heroically cleans my house someday.

As I therapist I maybe shouldn't say so, but I really believe that if insurance companies covered house cleaners, they could save a lot on therapy and anti-depressants.  Not that my own insurance covers therapy, so they wouldn't care.
