Long time lurker, first time poster

Wed Mar 19, 2008 at 07:52:07 AM PDT

So, after lurking on this great website for over a year I finally decided to introduce myself.I discovered this site through Daily Kos.  I figured since I managed to get myself knocked up (with a little help of course:) I would take advantage of this great community and become a true part of it. I am a 29 y/o social worker who lives in Indiana. I am an adopted Hoosier having been born and raised on the East Coast, suburbs of Maryland. I have been married for four years to a wonderful DH and am expecting our first child in August. I am excited and nervous about his/her arrival and am trying to keep my anxiety in check:). I had the blessing of being in an elementary immersion program and am fluent in Spanish. I grew up Quaker but now attend a liberal, progressive Methodist church here in town. I can tend to be a little bit introverted and shy sometimes (thus the lurking) but am definitely trying to branch out more. Anyways, that is a little bit about me,I look forward to being part of this community and getting great advice and support!

ask anything you want about pregnancy and motherhood. There are so many people here with so much wisdom - I can't believe I ever got along without this site.

Here's hoping for a not-too-hot-and-humid summer for you!

  • Bienvenida, Kalikat! (0 / 0)

So glad you've introduced yourself. :-)

  • Welcome, Kalikat, (0 / 0)

    Jump right in!

  • Thanks! (0 / 0)

Thanks to everyone for all your kind words:) It is nice to be part of such a welcoming community y gracias Elisa por todo sus palabras de apoyo:) I am a third generation worrier (my mom and grandmother taught me well:) so I am trying very hard not to worry too much throughout this pregnancy. Hopefully this summer won't be too hot and I can get to the pool a lot:)

    • a long line of non-worriers here... (0 / 0)

my father used to say " worrying does...WHAT Mary Katherine?  change an outcome? make things work the way you want them too? no. worrying does exactly nothing. It's a waste of time and energy"

even when my mom was dying she said "well I'm not gonna worry about anything , it won't change anything so why should i?"

come over to the bright side...I know you can do it! ;-)
and welcome...I'm Katie, single mom to liza who is nearly nine (9!!!)

      • Yeah:) (0 / 0)

I know what you mean. As my DH says "it's not like there is anything you can do about it".:) He definitely keeps me grounded that's for sure. Just last night I was freaking out about the baby not moving yet (I am 16 wks this week) and DH pointed out that my OB had said it probably wouldn't happen till at least 20wks and to stop worrying!:)

        • the best advice i can give you is (0 / 0)

don't read a bunch of studies, throw away the What to Expect Book and go get the Girlfriends guide to Pregnancy -- enjoy this time and revel in it and before you know it you'll have a happy healthy baby on your hands....

  • Hi there (0 / 0)

Welcome.  My brothers and several cousins live in Indianapolis (we grew up in North Dakota & I now live in Minnesota) and they ask from time to time if DH, DS, & I would consider moving there.  I'm not sure I could...it seems so conservative!  In fact, one of my brothers was a Democrat before he moved there, and this year he said he's going to start voting Republican!  But I'm glad you're here, and happy, healthy baby vibes to you.

    Cindy

    • I used to live in Indiana (0 / 0)

and we still have a house there, that we will lose in the banckruptcy.  When I lived there, I was very lonely, not knowing anyone.  Since we moved away, I have met many people on the net who live in or near Indy.  Wish I had know them then!  (Although we moved away for jobs, and our house isn't really close enough to Indy for us to have worked there.)

My family is all German farmers from Indiana.  My personal branch are teachers, Democrats, often as not agnostics...but a large segment of us are hardcore Baptists, no drinking, dancing, or, I assume, voting liberal.

      • I suppose it's like anywhere (0 / 0)

There's no place that's probably completely conservative or liberal.  But I like Minnesota because you don't have to look too hard to find a liberal!

      • For sure (0 / 0)

Before DH and I were married we lived here right out of college and knew NO ONE. It was really hard and we both definitely felt lonley. But, then we moved to DC (where I am from) and then Chicago for me to go to Grad school and then back here afer we got married. I have to say we have managed to make a life for ourselves which is nice. Plus DH's family pretty much all lives here and it will be a big plus when the baby is born.
