  • my week (0 / 0)

yesterday was a public holiday - Labor Day. So in addition to having friends over for lunch, we also went to the gym in the afternoon. Managed a 45 minute workout (25 min on bike and ran 2 miles) while DH and Jess swam. The rest of my week as follows:

    Tues: run - 1 hr, 4-6 miles
    Wed: swim w/ Jess
    Thurs: run - 1 hr, 4-6 miles
Fri: easy run - 2-4 miles
Sat: long run - 6-8 miles
    Sun: gym - free weights

  • still struggling (0 / 0)

I did run four miles outside Saturday and then did a combo outdoor run to the gym, some treadmill, some elliptical, run back from the gym on Sunday.  Took today off.

I need to do homework for my small business class tonight but I just read two chapters of Harry Potter to Eli (DH is now mad at me because Eli is too frightened to fall asleep alone -- whoops!) and now I'm thinking "how do I start my homework when it's bloody 10pm and I want to make the gym at 5?"  The homework ain't getting done tonight, folks.

Bloody hell, why do I have to go to a job for 8 hours a day again?

Huh? Wha? Oh, this is a training diary, right!

Well, I'm going to just keep plugging and hope I can get enough treadmill and elliptical time in this week and perhaps a visit to the running store for new shoes.  Then, with any luck, a nice long outdoor run on Sunday.

  • This week (0 / 0)

I walked 3 miles with DH and the stroller on Sunday, and then did some situps and arm weights.  Last night Julian didn't sleep at all (stuffy nose) so I got only 1.5 hours of sleep.  I'm DRAGGING ass today, so will just do some sit-ups and go to bed early (I say at 10pm).

Tues: run - elliptical, weights and sit-ups
Wed: biking to Tumble and Tea (8 mile round trip)
Thurs: run - walking 2.5 miles
    Fri: easy run - run?
Sat: None, I'm taking the CSET and PRAXIS II Social Studies exams.  Both.  On the same day.  12 hours of testing.  And THEN I'm picking up SIL from the airport.
Sun: Palm Sunday and Bro's 22nd birthday.  No clue.
Mon: DH's 27th birthday, Rory's pre-op appointment, and I'm going to TRY to run.

  • Feeling strong... (0 / 0)

    Monday: Yoga
Tuesday: we rearranged furniture all day. I mean all day. Four rooms worth. All friggin day. So I don't feel the urge to walk tonight...
    Wednesday: yoga at home
    Thursday: one hour walk
    Friday: yoga at home
Saturday: one hour walk (last one before we start the couch to 5K plan!)
    Sunday: swimming with DD

I'm really feeling strong. Yoga was great on Monday, and the walking is making me feel really good. The future's so bright..

  • Better get my act together! (0 / 0)

I signed up for a 10K which is now right around the corner... March 29th!  It seemed so far off when I registered for it.

After not doing much last week exercise wise, I'm trying to ease back into my routine.  I ran a couple of miles on the treadmill yesterday.  I finally got my iPod and joined the 21st century.  Wow... what a difference a little music makes!  I hardly looked down at my progress.  I put Sunrise Earth on mute on the tele and just listened to my tunes.  I got the Nike System but haven't hooked it up yet because I have to get the shoe lace thingy at the running store.  With the blizzard, I didn't leave the house for 4 days!  I plan on bringing my running shoes and iPod Nike system to Florida and getting in some running down there.

    My week
    Today:  Yoga
    Wednesday:  5 miles/XT Pilates matwork
    Thursday:  Yoga
Friday 3 miles/XT Pilates matwork/pack for our trip to Disney :)

    • You got the Nike+ (0 / 0)

When I was shopping for shoes, I had considered it.  Unfortunately, you couldn't pay me to give money to Apple, so I'm left out the loop. :(  Of course, that only made me want to upgrade my current heart rate monitor watch to the Garmin Forerunner 405, which I also can't afford. :(  Nor am I a serious enough runner to justify the costs.

      • Curious... (0 / 0)

You don't like Apple?  Just wonderin' why.

Yeah....I couldn't afford the Garmin either.  $320 is too rich for my blood.  I got the iPod Nano for Xmas The Nike + system was only $30.

        • Long story (0 / 0)

That goes all the way back to '83.  Let's just I never have been and never will be an Apple person.  Still, if I get into this running thing, I just may break my 25 year long boycott. ;P

The Garmin watch almost makes me want to get rid of my Garmin GPS and buy the watch.  I still can't justify that much money for something I'll lose or break.

  • I've started (0 / 0)

I got my I-can't-afford-this-hobby running shoes and I've started with the training.

    Let's see:

March 6: Walk/Run 15 minutes, thought about quit smoking (GAH!), Walked 2 miles
March 7:  Lifted weights (13,090lbs to be exact)
March 8: Walked 2.3 miles, light
    March 9: rested
    March 10:  Walk/Run for 15 minutes
March 11:  Will hit the gym tonight, plan to do 5 min. on the bike, 10 on the elliptical and 20 on the weights.

    • good job, Fabooj!! (0 / 0)

I love Asics. I've never worn another sneaker since I bought my first seven years ago! So cushy, so supportive. Now that you know what works for you, buy yourself a copy of Runner's World; they constantly have ads from mail order places that buy up end-of-stock oversupply and sell the shoes for peanuts. You can sometimes get good Asics for, like, $50 plus postage and handling. Hey, I'm cheap. I like my comfort, but I'm not paying The Man more than I gotta!

Good for you. Good luck and happy running - was glad to read in your entry that your run at Huntington wasn't painful as before.

      • Thanks for the tip (0 / 0)

I'm kicking myself for spending money I didn't have on these shoes. I bought some Saucony's from Zappos last summer that are butt-ugly. I just found them at the bottom of a pile of clothes.  I could have returned those and only paid peanuts for the Asics.  But then I would have had to wait.

        • I hear you (0 / 0)

but I have to say, I'm in favor of spending extra on the sneakers. They make such a difference; in 2000, I had a pair of cheap-ass Addidas sneakers and developed a nasty knee injury (thank god no permanent damage!). Switched to Asics, and goddamn, did it make a difference. Plus, $150 for sneakers that you wear for six months or a year is a hell of a lot cheaper than doctor's visits, PT, etc., etc. etc.

It's also good to go and try the shoes on the first time - the differences can be subtle but very important. If you're going to buy from mail order, I'd really recommend that you go back to your store and try the exact same pair on first. Shoe companies tweak their lines once or twice a year - sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worse. Asics routinely does this with their lines; one year, the 20-whatever line was just awful. I got nasty shin splints and changed to Keyanos. I can't tell you exactly what they did as I'm not into the technicals, but they fixed it on the next outing.

          • Oh what I was saying (0 / 0)

Is that I could have returned the Saucony's and taken that credit and put it toward the Asics.  I must go to shoe store to try on shoes first.  I wear an 11.5 and with that half size, mens shoes get wonky.  Sometimes I can squeeze into a 9.5 sometimes, I need to go all the way up to a 10.5.  And I hear on the tweaking.  Puma is bad at that and I've had to stop buying them because now all their shoes are too narrow for my skis.

  • We've had great weather (0 / 0)

And I've been getting a lot of riding in. DH took some pictures and I'm really pleased with how well the pony is going - but shoot, I look fat compared to my old svelte pre-kid self, especially on a pony. I don't want her to carry any more than she needs to - even though, seriously, 20lbs difference shouldn't matter all that much when you consider that I've gotten her about 50 lbs lighter. But it's helping me to resist the snacks that I tend to want when I hit mental blocks during programming, and I'm doing situps during TV time. Also, I've been spending more time outside in general, away from the refrigerator, which is also helpful.

  • Curves! Any advice? (0 / 0)

Hi all - very inspiring diaries. Rachel, thank you especially for the offline hello.

The big fitness news at our house is that DP just phoned Curves, which is having a sale, and we are all three going to a nearby one tomorrow. Not sure whether it's just me and DSD (stepdaughter) signing up, or all three of us, as DP is in a wheelchair half the time, but given that we are all out of shape, at least it's a start.

If anyone has experience with Curves and would be willing to suggest how to get the most out of a trial membership, I'd be grateful!

    • no worries - glad we finally (0 / 0)

      managed to trade e-mails!

I don't have any personal experience with Curves, but a cousin of mine here in Melbourne has joined up and she thinks it's great - good atmosphere, a doable plan and for 30 minutes, achievable. Good luck!
