"Super Duper Tuesday" Challenge

Tue Feb 05, 2008 at 04:02:34 AM PDT

With all our talk about exposing our kids to the political process....who's taking their children to the polls today?  If you do, post a photo.  Who's got the cutest "pre-voter" out there?  How did the poll workers and other voters treat your little one?  Any reactions from the kids about the voting process?

This is an exciting Super Tuesday - any selection on the Democratic side is a winner, so share the excitement (and the photos) here!

  • We have a playdate planned around voting. (0 / 0)

I'm meeting friends at the polling place so we can take turns voting and watching kids, and then we're going on a hike.

  • We voted at 7:00 (EST) (0 / 0)

As I just mentioned in an earlier thread, my 15-month-old is an early riser and was up at 4:00 today.  So we decided to beat the crowds and we arrived at the polls when they opened, with him in the Ergo carrier.  Some woman said to him, "Wow, you're up early!"  I just responded with "You have no idea..."

  • Voting? (0 / 0)

What is this voting of which you speak?  Our primary is in May - I can't remember when I've actually had a real say in the presidential primary process.  ::grumble::

On a side note, by oldest is excited to realize that she'll be able to vote in the next presidential election.  Boy, does that make me feel old.

  • I remember the first time my daughter went with (0 / 0)

me to vote.  We were waiting to go that evening when DH got home.  I guess the subject came up off and on all day.  That evening we went to the polls.  Wow, was she disappointed.  She thought we were going boating.

Note to NCMom. A bill which would move our primary to Feb. died during the session last year.  Contact your state legislators this year.  Maybe next time.

  • I'm in PA (0 / 0)

and my daughter turns 18 in March so she will be able to vote. I am having a party for her to celebrate being able to vte

The PA primaries may actually count this time!

  • Voting story (0 / 0)

DS won't be coming to the caucus tonight (swim class) but last year (when he was 3) he came to visit me when I worked as an election judge. The old people (I was the youngest one there by 30 years) were so thrilled to see him. He walked into the room and started chatting people up like a politician. Uninvited, he climbed right into the lap of the most outspoken Dem grandma lady there and told her, "We're finishing our basement so I can get a baby brother or sister." Just out of the blue, appropos of nothing. It was hysterical.

  • I've always taken the kids (0 / 0)

I've never voted without my kids, but this will be the first time I'm voting in my new neighborhood.

  • Seth came with me (0 / 0)

I took a photo in front of the school, where it says "vote here; vote aqui".  I'll post the photo tonight, when I get home.  When we went in to vote - the poll worker said to Seth "pay attention, so you'll know how this done" LOL

It was fun - we went before school - I volunteered for a PA raffle sale - Seth felt like a big shot - in school before the teachers even!  I liked that he saw what a big deal the election was - alot of traffic in and out of school!

  • We have a caucus (0 / 0)

I may have to take DS.  DH has an event tonight that he may have to get to before I can come home, so it may be take DS or don't go.  It's my first time caucusing (unbelievable...I have a degree in poli sci) so I really want to do this.  I know DS won't get anything out of it, but I believe in cumulative experiences.  I think it will be good for him to know that we involved him in this from the beginning of his life.  I hope other adults will be understanding.

It got me thinking about Election Day.  In '04 I participated in getting older folks to the polls, but now I'm thinking about parents of younger children.  I'd be interested in helping to organize some kind of childcare so everyone who wants to go can go.  I imagine there may also be adult caregivers (my mom's job is at-home care for a woman who has early Alzheimer's) who face the same issues in trying to arrange to be out of the house for even an hour.

    • Caucusing (0 / 0)

If you want to just vote in for the presidential candidate, you can just vote and leave. You only have to stick around if you want to vote for senate (or participate in agenda-plannig and whatever else they're going to do). Much as I like Al Franken, I may just vote and leave.

  • Permanent absentee here (0 / 0)

However, I sat down to fill out my mail in ballot with my 11 year old son and he knows how I voted. Here's a funny - his dad is a Swedish immigrant with a green card so cannot vote - but would vote GOP if he could (weird!!). So Alex gets quite a bit of GOP feed from his dad and from my parents (who are voting Romney today). Still, Alex has been watching all the debates and coverage with me and he is currently rooting for...Hillary!! I love my kid :-) Even though I voted Obama, I promised him that I will display a big 'ol Hillary sign in my front yard if she is the nominee and he promised to wear an Obama button to school if he wins :-)

  • My son did my voting for me (0 / 0)

I let my six year old political junkie fill in my ballot, and we'll bring it to the polls together after school.  (This is the kid who asked to stay in the car with the radio because the NPR story on Rudy Giulliani was "too exciting" to turn off.)  You won't find a rectangle more carefully filled in than the one beside Obama's name.  We discussed the ballot initiatives carefully - he strongly supports the community college one but relied on my guidance for the indian gaming initiatives.  And the gas tax initiative led to a nice discussion about how budget set-asides are a zero sum game.  Did I mention he's six?

I figured it was only fair to let my son have my vote. After all, he was an Obama supporter before I was.  :-)

  • Oh drat! (0 / 0)

I should have taken a picture!  I didn't think about it until I read this thread.

I voted with my 4 year old this morning.  It was fun to get him to fill in the blanks (with help).

  • I'll be taking both my girls (0 / 0)

into the voting booth with me. We've been talking a lot about the candidates this primary season, so they know what's going on. Everyone in my family supports Obama, including me.

But ... here's the thing. I'm suddenly feeling a pull toward Hillary. I would love for my daughters to see me pull the lever for the first viable female presidential candidate in history. This is such a historic moment! I may turn out to be one of those voters who decides while she's in the voting booth ... which would be a first for me. It's so nice to feel like we're choosing between the best of two good candidates, rather than the lesser of two evils.

  • Everyone was super friendly (0 / 0)

As I posted in the open thread DS was excited about going to vote (and a promise of crackers and juice afterward!). He got a little shy around the poll workers but they were really sweet and asked him if he was voting today. His response: Hat Off. Mommy Voting. :) I was cracking up all the way back to the car!

  • usually (0 / 0)

my son goes with me, but he will be with his dad today when i go. his dad did not get registered early enough to vote in the primary, but come november, we will each be taking him at separate times so he can get a double whammy.

  • no picture (0 / 0)

I forgot to take my camera to the polling place, but I will try to take a pic of Maya tonight proudly wearing her "I Voted" sticker.

I got to the polls after a morning meeting and unexpectedly ran into DH and DD, who were stopping by on the way home from dance class. Maya spotted me, ran into my arms and said, "Mami's gonna vote too!"

This was the first year we used electronic voting machines, so it took me a minute to figure it out. Our polling place is a school library, so I read Maya a Sesame Street book while her dad voted. Then I was off to work!

  • It took me longer than normal to vote (0 / 0)

with my 3-month-old daughter with me.  All of the volunteers at the polling station came over to see her. She smiled and cooed!

  • pictures! (0 / 0)

This is Lily's second time at the polls... I am going to try to have 18 years of pictures.

    • aaaawwww (0 / 0)

      cutie-pie!

      How did the interviews go?

      • Well! (0 / 0)

It went really well. I really loved the place, the opportunity seems really great- now I'm more nervous than I was BEFORE the darn interview. I've got my fingers crossed and my references in, so it's in God's hands now. :)

        • this is with the wife of a friend? (0 / 0)

          am I recalling right?

Hope it works out for you, Melissa. Good luck!!!

          • a girl friend (0 / 0)

referred me to this guy, so it isn't as close as all that. But I got a really good vibe from him, so I'm happy. I'm pretty well comfortable with my references. I just get nervous because I wasn't as ready for the "did you leave the old company on your own" question as I thought I was, you know? But it was mid-way through interview, and since things went well after that, I think it'll be o.k.

Really funny thing- so they have a website and a brand style for their packaging and I asked what the font was... it's the SAME font I use on my RESUME. I mean, how flipping crazy is that? I LOVE that font.

            Yes, I'm a dork.

    • Love her shirt! (0 / 0)

I would totally get one of those for Gus.  Maybe you can work out a deal with the Mothertalkers store.  I'd have him wear this even if it wasn't an election year.

  • Here's Seth (0 / 0)

     title=

He wants you all to know that he is usually NOT this happy to go be in front of his school!

  • Awww.... (0 / 0)

I love these pictures! Lilly and Seth have gotten so big.
