  • my week (0 / 0)

I finally had my first weekend long run on Saturday last week, so I'm starting to feel like I can impersonate a runner again. On the downside, Jess had the sniffles over the weekend so I skipped the Monday gym session. Can't have everything.

    Tues: run - 1 hr, 4-6 miles
    Wed: swim w/ Jess
    Thurs: run - 1 hr, 4-6 miles
Fri: easy run - 2-4 miles
Sat: long run - 6-8 miles
    Sun: gym - free weights

  • Crazy week (0 / 0)

I'm just going to be squeaking in fitness where I can this week.  One, I'm working for the Clinton campaign which has got me hoppin' just about every day this week.  Two, this is DH's last week at work before he retires, so tomorrow and Thursday I've got lunches to go to in his honor.  And, I've got doctor's appointments, a birthday party, and a 1,000 errands to do because I was out sick all last week w/the flu.

My mantra this week?  Maintenance... just to keep the stress level down!  I'll get back to it some time mid-next week (after March 4th!).  :)

    • congratulations to you and DH (0 / 0)

for all your hard work getting him to now. Golly, I can't believe the time's gone so quickly - seems like last week when you were writing about your decision for him to pile on the crazy hours in the last year of his work. I hope that you both enjoy the fruits of that hard work. What are the plans, initially?

Have fun working the campaign, too. I wish I could be out there for my candidate in the streets. I miss that about not being in the US...

      • I know! (0 / 0)

I can't believe March 1st is this week!  Since he works for local government, he has to take 2 months off... that's mandatory before returning to work.  We plan on paying off most of our debt with his payout and then figuring out how to pay down our mortgage and eventually, refinancing.  He'll keep the part time job through the 2 months, then quit and have totally normal working hours!  I think he'll look to join a band then too.  (He's a drummer)  He's been missing that a lot.

I am having fun working the campaign.  People are great... both the ones I'm working with and the people I talk to on the phone or in person.

    • retires? (0 / 0)

      Wow!  Congrats to him!

We have our first Clinton Campaign organizing meeting on Thursday night here.  Of course, within four days of that it could all be over.

So, don't waste time running this week, woman -- get out the vote!! ;-)

      • Yep (0 / 0)

Started working part time at the city in 1976 (it was a village then) when he was still in high school.  They allowed him to add up his three part time summers.  He's been there ever since... 30 years!  He started out mowing along the side of the highways, plowing snow, digging graves in the cemetery.  Now, he works in the engineering department as an inspector.  He'll go back to that in May.

I'm doing all I can for our gal!  An old Clarkie friend from '04 opened up a Hillary office in the county north of here.  That's where I've been going, as it's so much easier for me to get up there than to go to downtown Cols and fight the traffic.  Lots of stuff planned throughout the week.  Mostly phone banking and canvassing and visibility during rush hours if the weather's decent.  :)

  • still going... (0 / 0)

I'm still doing my weekly yoga (a major feat!), and now I'm starting a walking/jogging (moving into running eventually) routine with my girlfriend. Two evenings a week along the beach path. Wish me luck!

    • good stuff, C (0 / 0)

really proud of you - this selfish year is really paying off for you! I'll bet DH and the kids notice a difference, hey!?

      • Thanks... (0 / 0)

I'm kind of proud of myself. But then again, it's only February... :)

Any suggestions for beginning a walking-jogging program with my friend? I used to be a runner, but that was a long time ago. My friend looks more unfit than me (but then I'm skinny...people are always surprised at how unfit I really am...I hide it well!), but I suspect that she actually has more endurance. Should we start with a set distance walking, follow a schedule to up the amount of running, or just see how it goes and walk or jog as we feel the need? Anyone else done this sort of a thing?

  • Busy Time at Work (0 / 0)

So I've been very tempted to just chuck exercise overboard, but last week I managed to get in a few yoga sessions and a few runs.  The plan this week is to again just make sure I do some running and some yoga, despite being busy. My oldest started a new round of two-a-week swimming lessons yesterday, so while he swims, I'll run.  Will try to get in two yoga sessions as well--haven't done one since Thursday of last week and my back and hips aren't happy.

  • Shin update (0 / 0)

So, after bumping into my friend the running magazine editor at the gym on Saturday, I have been taking his advice - ice, raise the incline on the treadmill, take it slow.

Sunday I ran two miles and it still hurt, but I iced.  Took Monday off.  Ran three today at .5 incline and it didn't hurt!  Just back from the gym now in fact.  Just finished icing and now headed to the shower.

I'm going to try a five mile run on Thursday.  Cross your fingers!  If I can lick this within a week or two, I might not completely suck at the half marathon in April.

  • haven't been her in awhile.. (0 / 0)

but i have maintained a good exercise schedule over last few months.  i had to give up hot yoga as the times didn't work with my schedule.  but i have been walking 5 days a week in our hills.  hikes have been an hour to an hour and half. been combining this with treadmill spurts and work out with weights.

result?  i fit into my smaller clothes and feel good.  i have also gotten dh on a much healthier diet.  he's lost over 10 pounds in last month.  helps me too :)

  • Finger sandwiches derailed me! (0 / 0)

So, I was planning on running this Sunday, but came home after church to find that DH had recruited some of my friends to set up a full tea while we were gone that morning.

He'd been "working late" last week...seems in reality he'd been at my friend's house baking scones and shortbread.  I have never been so touched or surprised in all my life.  The reason?  I'd had a rough month and he was going away on business again.  ::sniffle::

And yesterday i just slept.  Jules was up all Sunday night, so I napped while my bro took care of Rory.

Tues: run - 8.5 mile round trip to Tumble and Tea
    Wed: Running my 5k
Thurs: run - 8.5 mile round trip to Tumble and Tea
    Fri: elliptical and arm weights
    Sat: Running my 5k
    Sun: elliptical and arm weights

  • I've never posted here before (0 / 0)

Cuz I thought it was only about running. Guess that's what I know.

I am really determined to try to up my hot yoga to four classes a week this spring. I've had a hard time making it more than two or three times a week during the past six months. To make this happen, I may have to get up at an unGodly hour one morning a week. We'll see.

Anyway, I had just about the best class I've ever had last Saturday - breathed beautifully, sweated just the right amount, did tons of great visualization (peaceful Vermont scenes). Last night I had a very intense class which was amazing. I was in between two very experienced people and could just feel their energy the whole time I was working. It also got really hot and humid, which it doesn't always do this time of year. I really pushed myself and am actually a bit sore today.

I've been thinking of trying to fit in some ab work on days when I don't go to class. Any suggestions?

    • welcome, welcom (0 / 0)

glad we changed the title, then...

I love Pilates for ab work; it's not just ab work, of course, but it's got those wonderful stretching moves and if crunches aren't particularly appealing, Pilates may remind you of what you like about yoga plus the extra muscular benefits.

      • Ahhh..Pilates (0 / 0)

I loved my pilates when I used to do it. DH and I both did early morning sessions for about five years. I had the most rock hard abs ever. Really nice muscles, but long and lean like a dancer...not bulky. Really good exercise. And great if you have any back issues.

        • I do have issues (0 / 0)

that's why I started the yoga: bursitis in both hips caused by arthritis in the joints around my lumbar spine (just call me granny!).

Does either of you have any book/video/website you recommend to find out a good little routine to do? Or is this something I really need to take a class for?

          • personally, I would say a class (0 / 0)

so that you can be sure you're doing the breathing and exercises properly. Also, I've only ever done Pilates classes, so I can't recommend books. I think some others here have used videos, though.

          • I agree with Rachel (0 / 0)

Once you get the hang of Pilates it's easy enough to do it on your own.  But some of the movements are subtly unusual and if you don't get those explained well (and have your postures checked), you could either waste your time not doing it effectively, or you could hurt yourself.

          • I'd say class at first at least... (0 / 0)

Once you have the idea of what to look for and how to make sure that you're doing it right, you can continue on your own. Most teachers will give you a routine for home use anyway. But there's a lot of making sure that your back is protected and making sure that you're using the right muscles. So take a class to begin with.

  • Shins Shins Shins! (0 / 0)

I'm sitting here icing.  I'm so depressed.  I'm sure the shoes are involved.  My running partner, Lane, was also at the gym this morning and she heard the slap slap slap of my gait and could tell it was F**ed up as well.

So I ran 2 miles and then did 20 minutes on the elliptical and some weight lifting. I'm probably going to skip my long run tomorrow, ice some more and try again Monday.

But I'm also going to go back to my first running store and see about other shoes. I honestly don't know what else to do.  It's a depressing spiral and I feel like my chance of finishing the 1/2 at the end of April is slipping away if I don't get some good tempo training and long runs in during March.

    whaaaaaa!!!
