Race training (?) diary, week of Feb. 18

Mon Feb 18, 2008 at 04:38:16 AM PDT

This is an open thread for those who are training for a race of any shape or kind. Post your training regime for this week and come back to report on your progress. Got a question on training, walking, running, biking, swimming or anything to do with race preparation? Post it here - someone will know the answer!

It's been suggested that we change the name of this diary from "Race Training" to "Fitness" diary. I'm not opposed; I don't think any of us here are training for anything at the moment. I initially kept the Race Training name because we did have a health and fitness diary from NJMom last year. So vote and let's see what suits us all best.

  • My week (0 / 0)

Well, one session does not a week make, but it's off to a good start. God love the theory of Newtonian physics, because it bloody well holds true - a body at rest, yadda yadda yadda

Mon: Gym. 50 minutes. 2 miles @9min/mile, 15 minutes bike, free weights
Tues: Gym again. This time a longer session, as Jess is at daycare. Running, free weights
    Wed: Swimming with Jess
    Thurs: Easy run - 3-4miles
Fri: Easy run - 2-3 miles
    Sat: Rest
    Sun: Long run

Complicating factors: Friday is DH's birthday, and Saturday is our 7th anniversary. But given the amount of time Anthony has been spending at home, god only knows how and if we'll celebrate. Please excuse the sour note, but there you go.

  • I'm in Training! (0 / 0)

My training, such as it is, is for the half marathon at the end of April.

We ran about 9 miles yesterday, and four on Saturday.  After the long run I took the boys ice skating, so today, I'm not sure I'll do a short run, though I probably should.  If I do, it will be in the evening.

I need to run four times this week, a short run today, a tempo run at some point during the week of about five miles, and another short run.  Then of course the Sunday long run.

    • I know a lot (0 / 0)

of runners run on consecutive days... how does your body do with that?  I did it in the beginning, but now I've just done 3x a week since then after having aches and pains in my legs.  Maybe doing my long run some time on the weekend in the Spring would be a good idea, and then a short run on Friday.... which would give me 4x a week running.

I have to work around church on Sunday (which takes up almost the whole morning because I co-teach the preschoolers) and soccer and dance on Saturday mornings... add to that I'm usually a little unmotivated on the weekends...something I need to work on, I guess!

  • Mid-winter break. Bah. (0 / 0)

I'm planning on mostly being a slug this week.  The boys have no school, and the gym playroom will be insanely crowded, and my youngest is still a little drippy-nosed from a cold.  Oh well.  My husband has a horrible work schedule this week, too.  So I'm hoping to squeeze in a decent walk T/Th evenings, and next weekend.  Any maybe pop in a dvd.

I have my ortho follow up tomorrow and I should get an official thumbs up to start running again.

  • My plan (0 / 0)

3x a week 3-4 miles on the treadmill w/Pilates matwork.  The other days, yoga.  Nothing too fancy, just trying to keep up a minimum amount of fitness until I can train outside for my 10K at the end of March.

Oh... and I'm getting my iPod Nano today... yippee!  I hope to the get the Nike system some time this week too. :)

  • Still warming up (0 / 0)

I haven't been stopping by the gym as much as I should. The community college was closed due to some big snows we had, then I just got back on the wagon when Valentines plans and the long holiday weekend interfered.  On the upside of being cooped up indoors,  I have found fitness videos on Netflix's Watch it Now list.  I've been able to try different yoga and pilates videos, which is great.

Today I am going to get my music playlist in order of tempo, do some pilates/wii boxing, and give myself every reason to hit the gym tomorrow. Maybe I'll even walk to the grocery store instead of driving (though it is snowing...)

There is a 12k run I'd love to do in May. We'll see if I'm in the walking crowd or jogging crowd. I know for sure I won't be "racing". :)

Mother wannabe, ETA Spring 09 if biology allows.

  • Ran (0 / 0)

three times last week, about 2-2.5 miles each time.  Now I'm stymied because my hips and lower back hurt for no good reason.  My knee does too, but that's because I hurt it (a little) in an unrelated accident.  I'm trying to decide if running would help or further hurt my hips and back?  I never had back pain until after I had Milo.  I'm actually pretty freaked out at the thought of not running, even though I've only lately taken it up.

It's nothing a little yoga can't cure, right?  Sorry for the kvetching.

    • Pain related (0 / 0)

to your knee being out? I know when I tweak a knee my hip and lower back get thrown out of whack.

      Yoga and a good chiropractor!

      • Maybe that's it (0 / 0)

        I didn't think about that.

I attempted to run yesterday and it KILLED my back, but afterwards I felt a little better.  I just can't figure out if my back needs more rest or more running.

        • not sure about more running (0 / 0)

I would say you need to strengthen your core - yoga and Pilates are really good for that. Also, does your gym have a trainer you can access? Is it very expensive to do so? I would definitely ask for some help on this. Better to pay a little bit and learn exercises that will strengthen you than to do something that's going to knock you out of action all the way around.

  • another week (0 / 0)

I did great last week-- ate well, exercised 5 times. But at weekly weigh in, scale said I gained 2 pounds! I am guessing some if it was premenstrual, but still, frustrating!

    For this week plans are:

Mon- 1 mile tempo run, elliptical
    Tues- 5K weights, abs
Wed- 1 mile tempo run, elliptical
    Thurs- 5K, weights, abs
Fri- 1 mile tempo run, walk, elliptical, stretching

As for the diary name, I voted "Fitness" as it is more general. But maybe a combo name would work, like "Fitness & Training Diary"? Or is that too long?

  • My week (0 / 0)

    Sunday: Yoga (done)
    Monday: 30 minute run
    Tuesday: Yoga
    Wednesday: 30 minute run
    Thursday: Yoga
    Friday: 30 minute run

My big accomplishment last week came on Wednesday.  I was sitting in my classroom after dismissal, grading papers, totally unable to focus.  My options: go home and nap, go get a big cup of coffee, or go run 30 minutes as planned.  I exercised serious self-discipline and did the run.  Afterwards I was totally energized and was able to grade the papers.

  • I'm thinking... (0 / 0)

Of trying to run a marathon.  The billboards for the LA Marathon went up a couple of weeks ago and I'm now I'm wondering, "Do I have the stamina and will power, to train for a marathon in a year?  Can I do it?"

I've been reading Running World, but I'm lost and I have no idea what kind of trainging I need or even how to start.  Walking, probably...Then I start picturing me running between downtown LA and South Pasadena for training and my knees get weak and I light up another smoke and think about a bowl of ice cream.

    • I should note (0 / 0)

That if I take this plunge, I'm well aware that I'll probably kill myself if I tried the entire 26.2 miles.  But they micro runs for the marathon too.

    • short answer (0 / 0)

with a year, yes, you can. It's totally, entirely possible to devote a year to training for a marathon and finish it. Just ask our Hillary, who did her first marathon in that way!

I would recommend that you start with smaller races in mind - build yourself up with a 10k and a half marathon. Runners' World does have a great training wizard, some of us here swear by Hal Higdon, too.

Welcome to the Borg. It all starts here.

    • I've only just started running (0 / 0)

and we might be in a different boat, because I have no interest in a marathon or any sort of competition.  But I've done well with this program.

  • My selfish year... (0 / 0)

As part of my selfish year, I'm doing regular yoga. I'll manage that for a month or so, and then I'm going to add in a run or two per week. Then I might add in another yoga session. That's the current plan... Wish me luck! There will be no marathons in my future. I ran three in college...when my body was very very different. Perhaps a small 5 K or so...but that'll be it. I'll be in Hawaii during the Ironman (which my uncle is running...and has won several times). I plan to watch the crazy people and feel smug that my insanity doesn't extend that far.

  • Flu (0 / 0)

We all have the flu.  Grant got it yesterday, and today Madeline and I woke up w/it.  Funny thing... I had a great 4 mile run yesterday outside.  Tons of energy.  Then, I came in, laid down on the floor and hacked for about 15 minutes straight.  That's when I suspected I might be getting whatever Grant had.

I find it so odd that I had so much energy yesterday... and none today!  I'm going to try and do a little gentle yoga and stretching today.  I don't know about running tomorrow, though.  I HATE being sick!!

  • Calf pain (0 / 0)

I ran 3 days in a row and on the 3rd (Sunday) my calves just started killing me, enough so that I basically limped home and they hurt the rest of the day.  I took a day off and this morning it seemed a little better but I was feeling unenergetic so didn't get very far today.

Has anyone else experienced this type of pain?

  • The Shins (0 / 0)

Yowza! My dear husband okayed a nighttime gym trip for me tonight as I'd been unable to get there yesterday, and I had the shin pain again.  I just think my legs hate running at night!  So I did about 2.25 miles before giving up the ghost and lifting some weights.

I'll shoot for a longer run in the morning.  Feh. I wish my body were more adaptable to running at different times of day.  I just think sitting at a desk all day is not a great prelude to a run.

  • My week (0 / 0)

In kind of a funk this week.  Last week I rode the bike to Julian's appointment (8 miles round trip) and then did a 19mile ride (round trip, of course) on Friday.  THAT felt great.  Then I rode about 2 miles on Saturday.  Again, great.  Sunday, I rested.

This week, however, has been awful.  Monday it was icky out, so I bailed.  Yesterday we had a pre-school interview (?!?!) AND a semi-urgent appointment for Julian (he pulled out some of his stitches).  So, no go.

    The rest of the week:

Wed: 5k around the lake with midgets in the jogger.
    Thurs: Pilates and elliptical
Fri: arm weights and elliptical (and I'm going to head to tumble and tea...wanna meet, Elisa?)
Sat: Run with DH (as well as a birthday party)
    Sun: Sleep
