Introduction to Me

Mon Sep 03, 2007 at 09:39:48 PM PDT

Hi all - my name is Jennifer and i live in Salt Lake City, Utah, USA.  I'm married to a university professor (20 years) and we have 2 children, ages 6 & 4.  Now that my kids are a little older, I am trying to find "me" again and figure out what to do with the rest of my life.  I've been working on this for a little over a year (since I turned 40), and the progress is slow.  I volunteer in both classrooms, and spend a goodly part of my waking hours driving kids around.

Oh!  We birthed our son, who is now 6.  We adopted our daughter from China 3 years ago last July.  Both experiences were equally incredible and fabulous, in their own ways.

JLMS QKW:  my initials, and my 3 favorite hobbies, back when your yahoo id could only be 8 characters.  I still quilt occasionally, knit when I'm waiting for something, and abandoned weaving with my first and only pregnancy.

I took up distance walking for my 40th birthday.  I completed the Portland Marathon last October 1, and I am going to the Des Moines Marathon this October 21.  Both were with Prevention magazine.  http://www.prevention.com/...
I also completed 2 half-marathons, one in January and another last April, to stay in walking shape and have a goal.

I sought out liberal blogs for relief, since, well, I already said where I live.  I saw this link on the dailykos site and couldn't resist, and I've been lurking since July.

UPDATE 9/04/07
Thanks all for the warm welcomes!  I managed to get swamped with errands today.  I'm taking a regularly scheduled 12-hour computer break and diving into the bubble bath as soon as I make sure we all have clean clothes and food for breakfast.  :-)

  • Hi, Jennifer (0 / 0)

I love crafts as well. I do a little bit of quilting (I'm just a beginner, but I sewed a quilt for my daughter a few months ago, featuring Dora the Explorer) and a bit of knitting (no expert - I leave it to my MIL and SIL). I love sewing, crocheting, scrapbooking and embroidery. Been doing an awful lot of crocheting for babies these past few years, with all the newborns out there!

Welcome to MT, and look forward to learning more about you - particularly why you're coming to Melbourne for Christmas!!

    Hope you like it here!

  • Hi Jennifer! (0 / 0)

I'm new here myself.  Mostly just a lurker, but I had to out myself long enough to say "Heh!  I'm from Salt Lake too!"  I live in Norway now, but I grew up in Salt Lake and most of my family is still there, so I get back often to visit.

I had heard there were small enclaves of liberal types scattered thoroughout the valley, but I had no idea they were allowed internet access.  Progress! Careful how loud you say "liberal blogs" though.  Your neighbors might hear you and seek immediate intervention.

Glad to have you here! You live in a beautiful part of the country but I don't envy your political climate up there. I guess Romney is very popular? I live in a liberal oasis in a red state, so I can somewhat understand what it's like to live among conservatives. [I just live among them in my extended family]

Glad you are a part of MT!

  • Hey, Jennifer... (0 / 0)

We have some things in common.  I turned 40 last year and took up running.  I have two kids as well, 7 and 4. I too live in a pretty conservative area and I find MotherTalkers to be a nice refuge.  I also volunteer in my kid's school.

Like you, I'm also trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow up :-).  I'm really leaning towards trying to make a go of my freelance art business because it wouldn't involve me going back to school and it's something I could do from home.  Not that I'm completely against going back... I'm just feeling a bit lazy about it.

  • welcome from another china adopter! (0 / 0)

My husband and I adopted our son back in 1999(Jiangsu Province). We had a "surprise" healthy boy referral and have enjoyed him ever since - although he is a handful! I took him back to his hometown/orphanage in 2005(he is now 8)and that was a great experience.

He is our only one - nervously taking his "pre-tests" at school this week(the ones for the school to see what they need to work on for end of grade No Child Left Behind test later in the year.)He was so worried that he sharpened about a dozen pencils!(while he is an excellent student and has no worries in that area)
