Judith Giuliani: Gracious First Lady or Psychopath?

Tue Aug 07, 2007 at 08:21:19 PM PDT

Ooh! Ooh! I recently ate up this Vanity Fair piece as it had the proper dose of salacious gossip and the GOP.

The profile, aptly titled Giuliani's Princess Bride, had to do with Rudy Giuliani’s wife, “Do not call me Judi!” Judith, and her conspicuous spending. Excuse my giddiness, ladies, but I think she is a huge liability for the presumed GOP frontrunner!

Apparently, Mrs. Giuliani has been married three times -- all for money. She practically bankrupt her second husband, Bruce Nathan, and has clawed and lied her way to the top. The things that she lied about -- like Nathan’s salary -- were simply bizarre:

Her second husband, Bruce Nathan, was, Barbara Walters mentioned in a March interview with Judith, a man of "means"—a notion Judith promoted. A former boyfriend tells me that after the divorce Judith often referred to her ex-husband as a "millionaire." But in 1991, the year before their separation, Nathan earned exactly $72,775. Judith would later insist that Nathan had a trust fund worth perhaps $1 million and a yacht. However, as Bruce has informed friends, there was only a boat—and no trust fund at all. "Do you honestly think I'd be selling wallpaper if I had all that money?" he would ask.

Inside the marriage, according to friends, Bruce considered himself a "golden retriever, who put a lot of faith and trust in things," only to find that trust misplaced. "Some people can fool you," he would declare sorrowfully. There were expenses incurred by Judi—large sums, considering his modest salary, he complained, mostly for her clothes or tuition for their adopted daughter, Whitney, at elite schools. Toward the end of their marriage, when Bruce's credit cards were no longer at her disposal, Judi was incensed.

The family was then living in a small rented house in the pricey neighborhood of Pacific Palisades, California. Although Judith also claimed on ABC that she had to "re-enter the workforce, after, oh gosh, more than a decade of being a wife and mother" following her divorce, she had actually resumed working in surgical sales months before leaving Nathan.

Oh, but this story gets better. Remember how the Repubs freaked out over John Edwards’s $400 haircut? Let’s see how the presumed GOP frontrunner and the missus stack up: They take private Gulfstream IV jet rides to Europe, own both a  $4 million home in the Hamptons and a $5 million home in the Upper East Side, and the missus is always adorned with Dolce & Gabbana even though she insincerely claims there’s “no room for shopping in my life.” My favorite detail of this story: She even has a seat in their private jet for “baby Louis.” Her Louis Vuitton handbag that is.

Of course, the details of this VF piece will only magnify once the general election rolls around. I can’t imagine the “values crowd” overlooking Rudy’s own multiple marriages, his estrangement from his children or his current wife’s misbehavior. To the horror of bystanders, Mrs. Giuliani and her entourage of body guards apparently trampled Hillary Clinton at a Ground Zero event. “"The nerve of that woman!" Hillary exploded, adding that her own daughter’s Secret Service detail was dismantled as soon as hubby Bill left office. “Who does she think she is?”

I, for one, will be watching this story unfold. So what say you, MotherTalkers? Are you sitting back and waiting for Judith’s next misdeed? Or, should the candidates’ wives be off limits to the press?

  • And don't forget... (0 / 0)

    she's the "other woman".

I dunno.  I'm not a republican, so who knows what my impressions count for, but I think she and Rudi both lack the "human" touch.

Should they be off limits?  No.  Whether we like it or not, they've been sold as a package deal in the past couple of decades.  If a wife is out campaigning and making public appearances, she's fair game.

  • I ate this up, too! (0 / 0)

I have to admit to perverse pleasure in reading this article the other day. I cannot imagine Rudy and Judi will ever be the darlings of the religious right, which at this point appears necessary for a Republican to win the White House.

I also have enjoyed reading about the "ick" factor that Fred Thompson's wife may bring out in Republican women -- since she is 20 or so years his junior [and looks younger than that, to me].

As for how big an issue -- well, I think Guiliani's got bigger problems than that to appeal to the conservative base. I do think that we want to like the spouse of our President, so this can't help. I don't know that people choose a candidate on the basis of the spouse, but I do think it is something we think about, in the back of our minds.

  • Oh, one more thing (0 / 0)

I'm sorry but a woman of her age, who is getting married for the THIRD time, wearing that kind of getup for her wedding -- maybe I am too traditional, but that looks ridiculous to me!

  • I keep trying to load the page (0 / 0)

but for some reason, it crashes my browser when I open it. Is there a printable version that anyone can post a link to? Much obliged!

BTW, has anyone read that Caroline Giuliani, Rudy's daughter, had on her Facebook entry that she was an Obama supporter?! Apparently, Andrew and Caroline have a really estranged relationship with Rudy - not for nothing, but the really nastily public breakup of RG and Donna Hanover's marriage really bore some bitter fruit in the impact on the two kids. A shame the adults couldn't remember their role as parents...

    • Reminds me of Reagan's problems (0 / 0)

with his kids.  While I can appreciate a politician's putting their duties first, it says something that many republicans find themselves estranged from their children.  Makes you wonder about all the Lakeoff stuff about the difference between liberals and conservatives.

      • what's the Lakeoff stuff? (0 / 0)

        Never heard of it.

I read extracts from when Reagan's diaries were published last year, and it really made me feel so sad. (Reminded me to put in my will that I want all of my personal diaries and journals burnt when I go -and preferably placed in the same urn as my cremated remains.) The fella was just unable to connect as a father.

  • Those Giulianis (0 / 0)

I can't stand 'em.  But he's very public about his loose morals, and somehow, beyond my realm of understanding, it hasn't hurt him yet.

Maybe I'm biased or overly hopeful, but our candidates--all of them--just seem so much more realistic than any of theirs.

  • Is it odd? (0 / 0)

I don't follow elections data, but is it odd that someone who has only been a mayor (of albeit the most major city in our country) is running for Prez? It just seems so implausible. Add in the cheesy personal stuff, and it seems like a non starter. I find the idea of a President Giuliani to be ludicrous. And yes, I am going to relish the VF article.

I worry more about Fred Thompson for some reason.

    • I know (0 / 0)

he seems so much more plausible. And, outside of the whole actor thing (which didn't hurt Reagan), he's not badly qualified. He's a real worry to me.

    • I've sort of had my fingers in my ears (0 / 0)

but DH thinks it's gonna be Thompson v Clinton.  That surprised me.  I have no idea whether or not this is realistic.  But he's been paying attention, so maybe it is. (He's also much more moderate / centrist than me -- he likes Biden.)

I can't even believe how checked out I am -- I'm lost in cynicism overdrive.  When I saw the photo in this diary, all I thought was, "That's a purty dress."  I can't work up the outrage to give a second thought to Judi/Judith.

    • Well... (0 / 0)

It is a city of what, 8 million people, with a large city government performing lots of functions.  I wonder whether Arkansas (from which Clinton ran as governor) has as large a population and government.

Nevertheless, I am no fan of Giuliani, and am actually pleased he is in the lead right now on the R side because I think he hasn't got what it takes to go the distance.  Starting with the downright nasty personality, personal foibles, and sleaze factor with respect to colleagues such as Bernie Kerik.

  • Good stuff.. (0 / 0)

I heard about her over the top wedding a while ago.  She sounds awful!  And yeah... that gown and tiara for a 3rd wedding...sheesh.

No, candidates spouses aren't off limits because the people the candidates choose as close friends or spouses speaks volumes about their own character.  It may not be fair, but the press loves a good gossip story.  That being said... many a nice man or woman has chosen a terrible spouse.... but these candidates are running for president.  They are under the microscope and so are their spouses.

  • Just remember (0 / 0)

It's Okay If You're A Republican. Doesn't really matter what "it" is, whether it's asking for blow-jobs in a park bathroom or having multiple affairs on your wives. Plural.

Rudy and Judi can spend like drunken sailors because they're clear from the get-go they don't give a rat's ass about the poor. John and Elizabeth should be wearing hair shirts and living in a cardboard box because they DO care about the poor.

  • these 2 deserve each other... (0 / 0)

and if the reeps sign up for rudy, then they deserve him and what appears to be his distasteful wife as well. blech...
