costume help needed

Wed Jun 20, 2007 at 08:56:51 AM PDT

Hello MTers!  I need your help today because, yes, I am lame when it comes to costumes.  And this one doesn't even require a glue gun.  Worse, I am lame when it comes to shopping.  So, although we have a million stores around here, I'm at a loss as to where to go.

DS is in a musical revue this weekend and he needs a black dress shirt, black pants, and a white tie.

Yesterday DH took him to Ross, where they took turns asking other customers whether the shirts they were holding up were black or blue.  Apparently DS has inherited DH's color-blindness.  But they struck out. So it's my turn, and I would love your suggestions!

  • Target? (0 / 0)

I would probably call around and ask whether they have it before driving to a million places.

  • Mall stores. (0 / 0)

Many are geared towards the younger shopping crowd.  Their clothes seemed to be cut in ways that are better fitting for young men, too.

Other than that, try discount stores like TJMAX or Value City...they often have shirt/tie combo's.

  • The Gap (0 / 0)

has black chinos and all sorts of black shirts.  I don't know how "dressy" he has to be - for my DD's jazz band concert, their intpretation of "black clothes" was quite varied LOL

  • There's always RIT (0 / 0)

You could always dye lighter colored clothes.  Cheapest pair of light colored pants and a white shirt with a bunch of RIT dye.  Clothes need to be cotton, though, to take the dye.

  • No clue (0 / 0)

where to buy a suit, but I liked the story of your husband and son :-)

  • thanks everyone (0 / 0)

    Mission Accomplished!

We went to Mervyn's and actually found a white tie.  I was shocked.  We also got some black dress pants, a little too big but with a belt I think we can make it work.   The cashier was pissy because the pants didn't have a price tag on them.  I'm sorry, was I supposed to price all this cr$p before I brought it to you to ring it up?  Have I mentioned that shopping makes me just a bit irritable? Anyway, no go on the black dress shirt there -- they have clothes for men, clothes for boys, but not much for young teenagers except t-shirts and jeans.  It's about 90 degrees today so I can't say I'm surprised.

We tried Marshall's -- also nothing in the way of a long-sleeved black shirt.

So, we went to the thrift store.  I love this place, mainly because it's organized by color. We started out in the women's section and of course DS was completely mortified.  (For someone who loves theatre, he's sure not very big on improvising.)  Amazingly, we found a shirt in the men's dept. that actually sort of fits, and doesn't have the dreaded "Ladies" patina.

I just finished sewing on two buttons and he is officially good to go.  The shirt was $2.14 (bargain!!), and the tie and pants (which he'll probably never wear again?) were close to $50.  Counting the aggravation of wandering around Mervyn's looking for an open cash register, not to mention the attitude blast when we found one, I'd say the cost was a little higher :-)

Thanks for all your help -- it's not easy admitting I'm this lame but in the end it worked out.
