My Broken Baby- NEW UPDATE! Gah.

Mon May 28, 2007 at 11:02:49 AM PDT

I officially have one unlucky baby. Somewhere in the trips to the doctors office, Lily got sick. Fever / rash sick. It isn't horribly surprising because of all the trips- hospital to doctor back to the hospital. What IS surprising is that she has strep throat! Even the doctor was shocked that, at 14 months, she would catch it. I am just so glad we have a great doctor's office, because he said he wouldn't normally even test for it, but JUST in case, since it would be hard to bring her back with the whole harness-carseat thing, he figured he'd give it a try.

Thankfully, once you know it's strep the treatment makes you feel a lot better pretty quickly. Still, I'm only half kidding when I told my mom I'm prepared to take her to church for the exorcism. Poor unlucky baby! All this drama in a less happy baby would be unbearable.

Lily's Saturday trip to the hospital went smoothly. Thankfully, she only required a cast on one leg and around her torso- not on both legs, and she came out of the anesthesia very well. She is definitely in a LOT less pain and is back to her happy smiley self.

Since the cast isn't a full spica cast, a lot of the problems, like diapering and fitting in the jogging stroller, aren't as bad as they could be. The hardest thing right now is the weight- holding her for long periods of time or walking around with her is really difficult. Sitting isn't easy- we're working with bean bag chairs to try and make things a little easier.

It has been an interesting few days. The pain has definitely subsided which has been a huge relief. We're starting to face the boredom issue, and she's definitely realized that her mobility has been severely limited. Any activity suggestions would be appreciated! Thank goodness for the season too, and cheap sun-dresses at Target!

Happy Memorial Day!

    that all went smoothly.

How long with Lily have to wear the cast?

    • Hopefully (0 / 0)

it will only be 3-1/2 weeks. Could be up to 5, which really isn't all that bad.

      • i'm sorry to have missed what happened (0 / 0)

to your baby girl!  what happened?  that is quite a cast - wow.  I'm just boo-hooing here wondering what happened.

        • I tripped (0 / 0)

down a (as in 1) stair on Wednesday morning on the way out the door to school and work. lily was on my hip, and when I landed, her  leg twisted and broke up by her thigh. We went to her pediatrician and he got xrays and after that, we went to the hospital er for a splint. The next day, the orthopedic pediatrician told me he couldn't cast the leg that day in the office, that the break was too high on her femur for a normal cast, she'd need a spica cast (around the leg and torso). Most of these casts need both legs to be casted, so that was not a fun prospect, neither was the idea that she'd have to be under anesthesia while they cast the leg.

Fortunately, thing finally started going well and she came out of things just fine. The splint was almost useless because every time we moved her, it was terribly painful for her. Now that the cast is on, she's doing really well.

  • Thanks for the update!! (0 / 0)

I'm so glad to hear that everything is ok and that she is no longer pain and you're able to see her beautiful smile again.

The boredom issue is going to be a problem, especially because she is so young. Have you let her finger paint? Or color? That may occupy her for at least a little while. Of course, that'll leave you cleaning up the mess! But, a mommy's work is NEVER done!

  • Poor baby...and poor mommy, too. (0 / 0)

I bet within a couple of days, she'll figure out all kinds of ways to entertain herself.  Little kids are so resiliant...they just don't even begin to realize that they "shouldn't" be able to do this or that.

My son had a cast on his lower leg and foot at that age.  It wasn't long at all until he figured out all kinds of ways to get around and work around the cast.  It about broke my heart seeing him do so, but I don't think it was something that ever crossed his mind.

  • I didn't even think about the weather! (0 / 0)

You're right -- thankfully there are no layers needed this time of year. I'm glad her cast is less than what  it could have been, and hope she heals up nice and quickly.

Great to hear she's feeling better!

And I LOVE how her dress matches her cast. :-)

    She's a beauty.

  • Oh good! (0 / 0)

Like I said - I had a friend who's 10 year old son had to have a full spica cast last year and it was Not Pleasant! I'm glad Lily's is not as involved and that the procedure went smoothly. She does look sharp in her pink!!

Glad it all went well, getting the cast.  Your daughter is so cute.

I'm not sure about activities, I know if it was me, I would be relying on TV bigtime, but not sure how you feel about television.

Good luck, I hope the weeks fly by and she is back to herself soon.

A toddler in a cast. No fun. My friend's two year old broke his leg last fall and haad to have a full leg cast on for 8 weeks. I believe he watched a lot of SpongeBob, did art projects, and played with little figurines in bed. Kids are little troopers. I think grown-ups would get a lot more frustrated with the limitations, but little ones just live with it without question.

    Glad everybody's OK (relatively!)

  • She is too cute! (0 / 0)

I love the pink cast... she is a cutey.  I'm glad to hear that it went well and I agree... sundresses will be perfect.  I think it would be really difficult to get a winter coat on over that cast.  Best of luck for a quick recovery!

  • oh, boy (0 / 0)

so glad to hear that you had the best-case scenario and sending healing vibes your way. I broke my leg when I was three, and had a full-leg cast for six weeks over the middle of summer. I can't even remember being in pain or more than just mildy irritated at the clunky thing. I'm sure your daughter will have similarly washed-out memories (if any at all, given that she's only 1) in the years to come.

    Hugs to all!

  • do you have a wagon? (0 / 0)

Maybe towing her around the neighborhood and letting her check things out at a leisurely pace would be fun.  Bubbles are good.  One book I like is called "Trees Make the Best Mobiles" -- can she spend some time outdoors looking at the trees / sky?  One thing I loved doing with my little one when I was out of commission was to play rhythm games.  He'd climb onto the bed next to me and we took turns clapping out or vocalizing rhythms and then trying to copy each other.  Maybe a tray with some play-do and plastic utensils?  A good game of catch could be fun, too -- Lily can remain stationary and you and her dad can take turns catching all her fly balls.

She is truly adorable.  I hope you all make it through this time feeling close and not too frazzled.  And I hope your new-ish boss is understanding :-)

It sounds like a good thing that she didn't need the full spica cast.  I hope she only has to wear it for the 3.5 weeks.
