Morning Walks and Baby Talks

Mon May 28, 2007 at 11:04:59 AM PDT

Over the last few weeks DS has decided that he wants to go outside for a walk first thing in the morning. We aren't talking 9 A.M. here; it’s more like 6 A.M. At that hour, I haven't even made the coffee yet. He toddles over to our door and grabs one shoe and then brings it to me. So I say to him, "Oh, I see you want to go outside." He responds excitedly, "Outside, outside!" and then launches into a string of his cute toddler babble. Most mornings I am not really up for seeing my neighbors out walking their dogs this early while I am still dressed in my PJs. But, DS LOVES these morning walks, so I give in.

This morning, after bringing me one sandal and one sneaker (LOL! To which I said, "No honey you need two of the same shoes", he shook his head no, but I put only both of his sandals anyway), I threw on my flip-flops and we headed out. While we were outside in the cool, dewy air, I tried to figure out why my little man loves these early walks. Then I heard it. The chirping of the birds was the only sound that pierced the peaceful quiet. I listened. He listened. Then he answered the birds back in his little baby voice echoing their caws. It was like he was talking with them in a secret language. The smile on his face was contagious. We continued on with our little stroll listening to the birds and pointing at the parked cars. He was so happy. It was the first time that I stopped to savor the moment.

My view of these morning walks has forever been changed. The feelings of dread have been replaced by joy. There is no better way to start the day then with a morning walk and sharing some Mommy/Baby/Birdie talk.

Sharing moments is what makes being a mommy SO MUCH FUN!!

I have talked about this before...giving in and seeing things through your child eyes makes a world of difference!

I used to walk the block with them to the bus-stop on school mornings.  Not too fun in winter months, but I loved it in spring and fall.  You're right...the air is clear, the birds are singing and there's a certain feeling of optimism about the brand new day.

I like to think of the kind of moments you described as "storing memories".  There are times when everything just feels so right in life.

  • Poor baby...and poor mommy, too. (0 / 0)

I bet within a couple of days, she'll figure out all kinds of ways to entertain herself.  Little kids are so resiliant...they just don't even begin to realize that they "shouldn't" be able to do this or that.

My son had a cast on his lower leg and foot at that age.  It wasn't long at all until he figured out all kinds of ways to get around and work around the cast.  It about broke my heart seeing him do so, but I don't think it was something that ever crossed his mind.

    mean so much.

Today we went for a family bike ride, me solo and DH pulling Maya along in a bike trailer. The bike trail follows a storm drain all the way to the ocean, and along the way there is a section populated by ducks-- males and females and babies, about 50 in all. We brought bread and Maya delighted in throwing it to them. "Patos comer!", she kept saying, which means "Ducks eat!". Then she started saying, "Yumyumyum yum, delicioso!" like Backpack on Dora the Explorer.

I've never been so interested in ducks before! :-)

People without kids wonder what about having children is so time consuming, and things like you describe are the big and extremely rewarding answer.  :)
