The Get To Know You Diary

Fri Mar 16, 2007 at 04:55:51 AM PDT

Hey...how's it going, eh?

We've been growing and growing and growing and while we don't seem to have intro diaries going up as fast as we did I know we've got plenty of new people around.  I thought perhaps it would be a good time for people to do a small intro post just so we can welcome new folks and make some connections.  Share as much or as little as you feel comfortable sharing or just say "hi!" to let us know you're still alive - we're mothers, we worry if we don't hear from you...

  • I"ll go first! (0 / 0)

I am a WOHM - I live in Queens, NY with my husband of 16 years, my 15 yo daughter, and my 7yo son.  We thought we'd live in NY for "just a few years" and it's been 10 years so far.  For all the aggravation of living in NY, every time we look at somewhere else, it's just not "us".

I work coordinating a program that provides supports and services for families who have a child with autism.  I've been doing some form of the same work for more than 30 years (including time as a camp counselor when I was in High School).

I am past the baby/toddler phase with my kids (waaaaaaay past lol), and my proud mommy moments come from seeing my kids gradually take on more and more independence and confidence in the world.  Nothing swells my heart with pride more than that "shoulders thrown back" swagger my 7yo does or watching my daughter moving among friends and teachers with breathtaking comfort and confidence.

I love reading (mostly fiction) and crossword puzzles - love being outside, so I'm anxiously waiting for SPRING!  On TV, I am a House addict, so as much as I watch American Idol, I won't be happy until Hugh Laurie is back on every week!

  • I'll go second! (0 / 0)

I'm a SAHM with a 4 yo and a baby.  I am trained as a scientist and I worked as a researcher, marketer and a teacher in previous lives.

I live in NJ (obviously) from the logonID!  I don't think we will ever leave since all of our family is here, and I actually like it here and can't imagine living anywhere else.  Although the taxes suck.

What else?  I'm a UU, I have a dog who is very barky.  I like being outside, drinking coffee, reading, springtime which is almost here.

    • Sorry (0 / 0)

I posted this and all heck broke loose - I actually can't stay because I'm supervising a double playdate and the boys are trying to tear each other apart.  Back later.

    • Okay now (0 / 0)

I think I can post - who knows when chaos will show up again...

I'm a ..uh...37 year old Canadian who used to live in Texas and has since relocated to Upstate New York to be closer to Canada and all of our family.  We were in Texas for 7 years so I'm kind of stuck with the handle.  I am a stay at home mom due to visa restrictions and I pretty much suck at all parenting...but I'm a good dancer, usually after I've had a few drinks.  I have three kids 9, 6 and 3 who get cooler as they get older....I'm so looking forward to hanging out with them when they're grown ups.  I have a degree in theatre and a degree in education and I spent some time as an elementary school teacher although my grammar sucks almost as much as my parenting.

      • Theatre in the house... (0 / 0)

I also have a degree in Thee ah tah and am at home a lot of time. I agree that the kiddo gets cooler as she gets older... although we are only at 18 months..so..

I don't drink, but dancing is a priority in our house and although I am simply "an actor who moves well on stage" and not a "dancer" we still love it when we are loading the dishwasher!

Since the house is on fire - let us warm ourselves.

        • Hah! (0 / 0)

I'm not even an actor who "moves well on stage", I'm "the actor that runs into the furniture if it's not spiked properly, and even when it is"!  I'm also not "an actor who can sing" but more of the "actor who can bray comically if needed" variety.  However, to keep from debasing myself too much, I can do five lines of Shakespeare and make you cry.  So, not entirely useless!

Gotta change a diaper, will write more intro on myself later!

  • I'm sort of the CA (0 / 0)

version of NJmom, except my dog doesn't bark so much. That and my whole family lives on the East coast, to which I'd love to move.

My two kids are 4 yrs old and 9 mos old. My education is in science, but along the ecology side of things: I've done a lot of bird, plant, and insect work, but these days I'm a SAHM, bringing the joy of nature to my kids instead of trying to quantify it.

I'm drinking coffee right now, and really enjoying it. Spring is here, in CA.

In my past, kidless life, I considered myself quite athletic, but now I'm just maintaining until the kidlets get bigger.

  • Might as well join in! (0 / 0)

I'm a 31 yo WAHM with a 3yo daughter. Before she came along, I was a graphic designer, and since then I've launched my own invitations business. I'm in year 2 with that "baby" and hopefully it grows as much this second year as my daughter did in hers! Though I'm a native Californian, I'm a Pacific Northwesterner by heart and a Midwesterner by address. Living in and around Chicago the past several years has been great, and we plan to raise our kids here. I came to MT through Elisa and Amy, who I met several years ago thanks to my husband and their husbands being long-time friends. With more and more people logging in, I find myself becoming more of a lurker. Usually if I have POV, someone else has already stated it, so I've been enjoying all the reading. We're expecting our second child in August, and are looking forward to finding out if it will be a boy or a girl!

    • How cool! (0 / 0)

I am a graphic designer who is between jobs right now but a friend and I are constantly talking about setting up an invitations business. We do them for friends as a favor right now and hope to get it started. Congrats on yours!

As my hello, I'm a 28 year old mom of 1 baby who turns one at the end of this month. I love to read and yell at the TV during political shows. My DH and i have been married for almost five years and he is a middle school teacher. We live in the suburbs of Chicago with our baby, our Husky-Akita mix dog, two cats, turtle and ferret. I hate to clean and still don't want to know what I want to "be" when I grow up, but when I figure it out I'll head back to school and will try to avoid corporate retail work forever.

  • Good idea! (0 / 0)

I'm a SAHM and an OTANM (older than average new mom) of a seven-month-old son who was a 28-week preemie.  DH & I are from North Dakota, but we met in the Twin Cities where we still live.  We've been together 10 years, married for five.  I have a master's in communications and an extremely spotty career path, but currently I teach writing and public speaking one or two nights a week for a business college.  I'd love to start my own business so I can continue to be home with DS, but haven't figured that one out yet.

We love to travel (we were married in Scotland) but haven't done much since DS arrived.  I love to read, hate to cook & clean, am interested in family history & heritage art, will probably be getting a dog soon, and I'm a liberal Christian, which means a lot of people don't know what to make of me.  My personal motto is "Trailing clouds of glory" from a Longfellow poem.  Although I haven't showered yet today, so I could be trailing clouds of something else.

  • sandwich mom (0 / 0)

I am a mother of a 16 year old daughter who is about to get her drivers license!  My husband, daughter and I moved to a larger home 2 years ago to accomodate my mom and step dad as they now live with us.  I am 52 years old and my parents are in their mid 80's.  We live in East Bay of San Francisco area in a beautiful hilly area that is bursting with spring.

I work in high tech publishing as a Corporate Sales and Marketing Director and been in the industy for over 20 years.  I was a SAHM up until my dd turned 2.

We have a rich and sometimes complicated life:) However, we are thankful to be where we are.  My husband and I are planning life "after high school" and will likely  move to our second home in Jacksonville, Oregon in 3 to 4 years.

Finally, I am so glad to have found this wonderful community of MotherTalkers!

  • Hi, y'all (0 / 0)

I'm a SAHM, though I work during the summers and on some weekends as a ropes course/climbing wall/outdoor education instructor at one of our area's Girl Scout camps.

I have 2 daughters, a 19 year-old college Freshman and a 9 year-old 4th grader (who is currently homeschooled). I am happily married (we will celebrate our 15th anniversary in May) and live about 30 miles east of Birmingham, Alabama.

I have a gray cat, Boots, and a shibunkin goldfish, Alana. (Both animals were named by the 9 year old).

  • I'm next (0 / 0)

I am a 45 y.o. SAHM with 10 year old twins [girl/boy]. Until 10 years ago I worked as an attorney for a state agency here in the Lone Star State. DH and I went through 3.5 years of trying before I got pregnant and I was glad to "retire" from practicing law after 10 years and do something different for awhile.

I'm a liberal Christian, which means that my church is more interested in helping people who need help, and less interested in finding out what goes on in other people's bedrooms. My husband is a tax accountant which provides me with the opportunity to stay home and be PTA President and teach an ESL class [volunteer] once a week. I came here to MT via DailyKos, where I am only a lurker.

I'm a native Texan but I love to travel. I also enjoy reading, movies, spending time with friends, the show Arrested Development, hanging out with my kids & DH, politics and good food.

  • Hello. (0 / 0)

    I'm a WOHM with a nearly 7 year old and a 4 year old -- both boys.

I work in arts fundraising, currently on a capital campaign at an art museum.  Although I've been in the field for ten years, I yearn for a different path.  I love art, though, so this is a good place to be for now.

My husband has been the "primary caregiver" since our oldest was five months old.  He teaches English part time at a local community college and plays in a band.  He's a great dad and enjoys taking the boys to the playground without me, because my neurotic concern for their safety impedes their ability to go nuts on the jungle gym!

We have two cats that we picked up in graduate school in Kentucky where we met.  We'll celebrate our tenth wedding anniversary in November.

I'm Jewish, hubby is Catholic.  We're pretty non-religious but celebrate all the holidays because they're fun.

  • Howdy (0 / 0)

I'm a WAHM, with a 6 year old daughter; I run my own computer consulting business in partnership with my husband. We live in the North Coast region of California in a rural area on a small farm. We run the business off our own property now, but in the past we had an office and I took my daughter in to work.

My degree is in engineering but I also love to cook and sculpt and paint and ride horses.

  • Hey there (0 / 0)

I"m a recently turned 41 divorced working mom of a 7 year old (she'll turn 8 in May).  I live in NH and work at a performing arts center as the director of development.  I have a background in theater and a degree in English from Holy Cross. I was married for 15 years, came out of the closet 4 years ago, divorced amicably and am happy now with my wonderful partner.  I love nothign more than making people laugh.  I am at times a completely incompetent mother which I find provides fantastic fodder for my stand up comedy routines....

  • Loving this thread! (0 / 0)

I am a 30-yr old Jewish GSM (Graduate Student Mom) to a 7 month old boy.  2 weeks after he was born, he was coming to classes with me in the sling; due to this, I don't remember much of what I was taught last semester!

I am studying public administration and am almost done with my 2-year master's program.  I hope to go into the nonprofit sector once I'm done this spring.  Live in NC, came to MT via DailyKos, and lurk here more than I comment.  I love reading everyone's insightful, human, and funny writing!

Oh yeah, 2 cats: Max & Belly.  Belly is so named because of having a prodigious one.

  • Hi, Mters... (0 / 0)

I'm a 40yr old SAHM of a 4yr old daughter and an almost 7yr old son.  We live in a small rural suburb of Columbus, Ohio.  We also have a crazy, barky, shedding dog like NJMom. :-)

I was born in Scotland, but lived in the NW burbs of Chicago for most of my childhood until 10th grade when we moved to Orlando, FL.  I went to UF for a year and a half before dropping out, and later transferring to art college in Columbus. I haven't done much with my degree, until now.  I have been painting portraits of kids and pets lately, though it's not enough to really make a living on.  I've been thinking about going back to school and getting my nursing degree and either becoming a labor and delivery nurse or a lactation consultant.  I've also thought about getting my master's and becoming an art teacher.  Can you tell I still don't know what I want to be when I grow up?

We are UU's and I co-teach the Preschool Sunday school class.  I also just recently retired as a La Leche League Leader, as my kids activities are taking up more time in my life.

DH and I have been married for 12 1/2 years.  We met while I was attending art school and I've now been an Ohioan for 18 years, even though I don't consider myself from here LOL!

I'm 33 years old, I work full time from home doing communications & marketing for a non-profit based in Atlanta. We moved to Portland from ATL nearly 3 years ago, when my oldest child was 3 weeks old, and I've been a telecommuter ever since.

I grew up in the midwest, went to college in Texas, grad school in Kentucky, where I met my husband, and then Georgia, now here. We so love life in Oregon I can't imagine leaving, though we do miss our families (his is in Massachusetts). We've been together 7 years, married for five. He's Catholic, I grew up UU, we go to neither church at the moment, which is a point of some friction. But I digress.

We have a five month old daughter who may possibly be finally settling into a sleep pattern that will allow me to stay sane. For which I am very grateful.

I came here through DailyKos and really like being among a group of articulate interesting people!

  • New here! (0 / 0)

This was a great idea - I was waiting to see where to jump in!
I'm a 33 year old WOHM with a 4 1/2 month old (aka The Pumpkin - hence the user name). My degrees are in chemistry and I have a research job at a consumer products company. My husband is a SAHD, although he works part time as well teaching lessons and taking what gigs he can get. When we got married we knew that a PhD in chemistry trumped his BA in music so we decided he would be the primary caregiver. We've been married 2 1/2 years now - and we met online. We have two cats that are still adjusting to the new baby. (Turns out cat toys and baby toys are pretty similar - we're always finding one of them playing with the baby gym and we have to remember to turn off the motion detector music on the gym before we go to bed.)
We are currently in Wisconsin, although I've lived in several places in the Midwest and Southeast, and my husband has lived in several places on the east coast. We're pretty involved with our church (especially DH with the music) and also enjoy gardening and watching way too much television.
I have really enjoyed lurking here and appreciate the discussions; I hope to jump in and participate!

  • Hey hey (0 / 0)

I'm a 33 year old, working gal, with a husband and three step-kids.  We live on the beach in Marshfield, MA, and are looking to buy a house in Newport, RI, by summer's end.

Born and raised in SC, the first thing I did upon my college graduation was pack a Uhaul and move to Chicago.  It was January, and I timed it badly.  But spring came, and I knew I had made the best decision.

Six years ago, while on a business trip, I met my husband at Kennedy's on West 57th in NYC.  He was living in MA.  So I moved out here, since he couldn't leave (the aforementioned step-kids).  Going from Lincoln Park to the suburbs of Boston has been a dejecting experience; it's way too hard to meet fun, young people here, and I can't wait to move closer to friends.

Currently, I'm trying to get knocked up.  Good times!  In the meantime, I am taking writing workshops and working on a novel.

My likes are: The Office, John Updike short stories, and reading the movie showtimes in The New Yorker.  My dislikes are: plastic jewelry, jello shots, and religion.

  • Hello from the Heart of it All (0 / 0)

Hello from Ohio! I am a PTSAHM (part time stay at home mom?), 35, born and raised here in Central Ohio. I am an actress, mommy to an 18 month old kiddo, a 10 year old furry blonde pooch and a 3 year old beagle/horse mix we rescued. (They said he was a beagle and wouldn't go over 40 lbs... he now weighs 90). I've lived in a couple different places, but decided to raise my furless kid near family. My husband works in electronic commerce as a VP of Sales.

I love reading cookbooks and I do occasionally cook from them. Otherwise reading, baking, singing and movie watching are the things I love most. I used to only drink tea, but discovered the world of coffee after my little one was born. I am discovering every day how much of a bleeding heart liberal I really am and I love, love, love my husband (although today he is so schizo I could cry!) :)

    • Where in Central OH? (0 / 0)

I used to live in Columbus and really loved it there.

DH is a big Buckey Football nut and we still celebrate football Saturdays by dressing in Scarlet & Grey (we even dress up the the little on too..) and try to watch the games. It's not the same, but we try to make it a fun family day.

      • We live on the east side - HO! (0 / 0)

We live in Bexley home to Capital University (just east of downtown.) My hub and I both grew up in the area (Gahanna and Westerville) and both attended OSU (him BA, MBA - me BA) although we didn't meet until after college.

We too are HUGE Buckeye fans. Although, I must say I have no time for tailgating anymore... getting up at 5 am to drive to the stadium is no longer a big priority!

        • Very Cool (0 / 0)

We lived in Victorian Village while DH was going to Law School at OSU. I loved living there. It was so close to downtown and the University. I really miss it at times. People here in NJ are often baffled that a born and bread East Coaster would like living in the Midwest. But then I tell them how great Columbus is and how it's just like any other big city but it has such a homey, small town, and welcoming feel to it, they start to get why I loved it there. Sadly, the legal market kind of sucks in Cols (with two law schools I can see why its so competitive...)so that's why we left. But I keep telling DH if the opportunity to go ever comes up, I'd move back in a heartbeat.

          • We love Victorian Village! (0 / 0)

I rehearse with my theatre company in King Avenue UMC right in the heart of VV. We would love to live there, but the houses are mucho dinero. Plus we would need a big yard for our 2 pups. They are fairly spoiled with a nice yard.

Let us know if you ever come to visit. We'll put you up!

  • This is Such Fun! (0 / 0)

I am a 30 yr old SAHM with an almost 14 month old son that is such a curious, energetic, snuggly creature, and I wish he lept better at night. We are currently living in central NJ. I am an a native of Northern NH, went to Boston University (where I met Elisa through a mutual friend...fun times...), moved to Chicago (hated it), then to Columbus OH where DH went to law school (loved Col, and then on to NJ. NJ has been an adjustment, but after a rocky start, I am starting to like it here. I have a degree in human physiology that I pretty much don't use, haha. :)I trained as a yoga instructor 3 years ago, but I haven't taught classes in about a year (I really need to get back into that b/c I really miss it.) My hobbies are knitting, reading, cooking, driving my DH nutty, and hanging out here. I am a terrible housekeeper and I hate to iron. I love watching Lost, Greys Anatomy, and HBO's Rome.

    • I LOVE GRAY'S... (0 / 0)

I am huge TV freak, must to the hub's dismay! I DVR Gray's, Studio 60 (which I am so sad they are not going to renew), ER (still, I know), Gilmore Girls, and House. Oh and The Office. (my friend Ursula had a small role on the Office as a nursing mom from the Stamford branch). Often when I should be taking "nap time" to shower or launder something in my house I am sitting in front of my TV fastforwarding through commercials!

Of the Office. It was SOOOO funny. :) Yeah, I do the same, except I don't DVR I use the on demand feature of our cable. :) Maybe that is why housework never seems to get done. LOL.

  • Love this! (0 / 0)

I'm a 38 yo SAHM of two creatures: Sally will be 5 in April; Sam is 2 1/2. I have a bachelor’s degree in Gender & Feminist Studies from Pitzer College & a Master's in Women's Studies from San Diego State. I plan to go back to work once both babes are in grade school. Doing what, I don't know!

We currently live in a suburb of Cincinnati after spending 10 years in San Diego. Our son has short bowel syndrome and we wanted to get him the best possible care, which is why we ended up here. He requires I.V. nutritional support (TPN) and gets the remainder of his calories through a g-tube. Although, lately, he's been eating a bit by mouth.

We really like it here (other than the profoundly sad race/class wars) - although the 40 degree temperature shift in the last 24 hours is kind of bizarre.

As much as I'm opposed to the institution of marriage, my DH is Canadian so we married to get him a green card.  We'll celebrate our 13th anniversary in November.

  • Hi! (0 / 0)

I'm Christie (my screen name is a character in one of my favorite childhood books, Watership Down), 32, currently a SAHM in Colorado Springs - it can be kind of hard being a liberal here, but I'm managing.  I have two boys, ages 5 and almost 4, who are very busy and hilarious and sweet and sometimes infuriating  :)

My degree is in chemistry, I left the PhD program when I realized that doing research for the rest of my life was going to make me miserable.  I taught HS before my kids were born, but I'm not feeling any draw to go back to it.  Now I'm planning to be a real estate appraiser, taking a course now and hopefully starting work in the fall.  I'm really struggling with the idea of my kids in day care (their school is only part time now), but we can't afford for me to not work any more, so I guess we'll make it work.

DH and I have been married very happily for 8 years, we have a 7-year-old dog, who we didn't know was a grumpy old codger until we got a puppy last summer.    They're getting along ok now , though.

I like to read, ballet dance, and I LOVE Mothertalkers!  I mostly lurk, because you all are more eloquent than I will ever be, but this site has really enriched my life so much.

    • Don't have time to post my bio now, but (0 / 0)

wanted to say that I'm in the Springs too, so you're not alone ;)  I work for d-11... Where did you teach?

      Back later with more...

      • wow! (0 / 0)

I didn't know there was another Springs person here!  I actually taught in Aurora, CO before we moved down here.  What do you do for D11?  I have followed all the school board stuff there in the last few years, so glad the voucher people didn't take over everything.  We live in the SW part of town, how about you?

        • Yes, our school board (0 / 0)

is whacked.  I'm hopeful the recent recall and resignation of three directors will make a difference.

I work at Tesla (alternative high school) w/ teen moms and their infants/toddlers, and I love it (most of the time).  I live in the area off Garden of the Gods and Centennial (near Mountain Shadows).

Before the Springs, I lived in Broomfield.  My oldest is still in the Metro Denver area... living on his own in a teeny-tiny little place downtown.

  • Woo hoo! My turn! (0 / 0)

    I love this stuff!

I'm a 36 year old WOHM.I am a development research analyst for a small university here in Peoria, IL. Mother of Haynes (6) and Gabriel (3). One dog - basset hound. Several fish. DH is an assistant prof at same university - his job is what brought us to "the middle."

Grew up in lower NY state, BFA in Theatre from Montclair State U (NJ). Then moved to Seattle, where I held myriad jobs and did theatre nights and weekends. Met and married DH in Seattle (he's Texan through and through - have relatives in Austin/San Marcos, Lisa in Austin!). We decided to go to grad school, and ended up at FSU in Tallahassee. Had both boys there. Been in Peoria for 2.5 years. Arrived here via DailyKos (which I barely visit anymore now that election season's died down, don't tell Markos!)

LOVE: Nip/Tuck, reading, gardening, chocolate. I'm also a UU and loving it - having been raised Catholic. Per my diaries, I'm an activist too. Fighting a local landfill at the moment.

  • geezer mom (0 / 0)

    Hi,
I'm a 55 year old mom of a nearly 8 year old son, who we adopted from China when he was a baby. I stay at home, study Chinese, volunteer with ESL students(someone up thread mentioned this too). I have some education but it was long ago, and I took off after college and lived in Europe for some years, and was over 30 when I married - in 1984.

I lived in "the southern part of heaven" - we still call Chapel Hill, North Carolina that, but I am a native Texan married to a native Texan.

I like having a lot of life experience to add to my parenting, but having a little one with no grandmother help is tough - going to visit means I am taking care of old and young!

    • Not a geezer at all! (0 / 0)

I met you at Ykos'06 and you are most certainly not a geezer. Would have never guessed you were in your 50s. Clearly the boy keeps you looking and feeling younger ;->

      • I keep reading the bios (0 / 0)

Seeing "33" and thinking, wow, that's so old....
and then I remember that I'll be 38 this year. That can't be right.

I read a newspaper article several years ago describing a younger college classmate of mine as "a 33 year old mother of two" and I nearly choked on the spot. In my mind, Susan is still 16, just as she was when I met her!

      • geezer looks (0 / 0)

Christina, you are too kind! My secret is not a young son - just sunscreen, a good color job on my hair, and inheritance of smooth skin.

I am really looking forward to Yearly Kos in Chicago, too.

  • Me (0 / 0)

Funny - there is a roll call diary up on Dkos right now too :->

42 year old single WAHM with a 21 year old and 10 year old - both boys. Raised the 21 year old by myself. The 10 year olds dad and I split up amicably 7 years ago and we share 50/50 time. It's a very nice parenting partnership thankfully! I have worked at the same university for 21 years earning my real estate and accounting degrees in the early years and now I am the Assistant Controller. I live on the north coast of San Diego and plan to be here for life. Youngest son and I are passionate about sports. He plays baseball and football and we are huge Padres fans. Oldest son still lives with me and is in the process of digging out from some mistakes he made from 17-20. I swear some sort of light bulb went back on in his brain recently! He had been in classic male teenager "do whatever I want" mode.

Anyhoo - been politically active and blogging since '04. I belong to a yahoo group of August96 moms which introduced me to the wonderful source of support you can have from internet communities so it was a natural to come over here.

I have no one parenting philosophy since I have two very distinctly different children! One boy was nursed, one was not. One had to cry it out at one point, one slept through the night at 3mos and never stopped. One is most likely ADHD, artistic, emotionally sensitive and always wise beyond his years. One is happy go lucky, sentimental, learns easily, goofy and athletic.

Oh, and since I don't have time to post all that often, just refer to whatever Mkatherine writes - we seem to be twins ;->

  • Hi Everyone! (0 / 0)

I'm a 32 year old PTSAHM. Dh and I live in upstate NY, near Syracuse, and will have been married seven years as of September. We have two sons who are 3 and 16 months.  I used to teach k-6 music in a Catholic school about an hour away from home but as I was barely breaking even after the daycare when my second son was born, I decided to look for work closer to home.  Right now I work two days a week teaching choir in an urban afterschool program with students in grades 1-5.  I also direct a children's choir at my church that meets for about an hour a week and I play keyboards and lead the music at the 8 am Mass on Sundays.

I was raised Catholic and still practice but I don't really think of myslef as "churchy"  It's an odd coincidence though that most of my career path has been in Catholic institutions as I wasn't trying for that path at all.  I was music director at a small liberal Catholic church for a few years, then I worked at Catholic Charities on and off during my years in grad school, I was hired by a Catholic school and now I have a few jobs in my church.  Our priest is encouraging me to learn the organ in hopes of promoting me to full-time music director for the parish now.  I have been trying to find work teaching music in a public school around here as the pay and benefits are excellent but the jobs are few and far between and there seems to be a lot of nepotism in the area.

My education was in music-specifically vocal performance and then music ed.  I really thought I was going to be an opera singer but I didn't like living away from home when I was going to grad school so my plans took a different direction.  Music ed is a great fit for me because I love working with kids and being able to hang out with my family and putter around in my garden when the weather is nice.  My parents and I have connecting backyards which is great for babysitting purposes and gives the boys lots and lots of room to run.

    • Hey music teacher! (0 / 0)

We're practically neighbours - I'm near Rochester!  I know, the handle is confusing but we moved from Texas to New York to be closer to Ontario and all of our family.  Not quite as close as backdoor neighbours but it's better than it was.  Nice to meet you!

      • I remember you were upstate too (0 / 0)

Near Rochester but in a more conservative ruralish area from what I remember in some of your posts?  Am I right?  You wouldn't be a 315er, would you?  LOL  It took a lot of time for people from Syracuse to grasp the meaning of 315ers.

My area used to be very conservative but it seems like the tide is turning.  I guess Bush really is a uniter not a divider.  My formerly predominantly conservative hometown (I always was an odd fit) has definitely turned against his nonsense.

So forgive me if I direct you to myMySpace page for all the other details, since I already elucidated them there.  <g>

  • This is a fun diary! (0 / 0)

I always hesitate on these, not sure how much I want to post!

I am a 29 y/o mom of a two year old daughter and our son, who died shortly after birth.  We are currently waiting for a domestic adoption referral through an African American infant program.

I am a registered nurse by training, with a background in emergency medicine & underserved populations, but I am currently working for a children's language school.  I work part-time, mostly from home, and can usually bring my daughter with me the rest of the time.  As is common around here, DH is a software engineer, allowing me the luxury of part-time work and us the ability to own a home in a pricey market.

We love cooking good food, visiting local restaurants, day trip & weekend travel, and anything outside (hiking, camping, beach walks).  We try to be environmentally and socially responsible but often feel like we're falling short!

    • Agreed (0 / 0)

Yeah, I never know quite what to post as an intro., either. I could seem like a totally different person with each try.

I always think about you and your son when you post, because we lost a little boy shortly before his birth (I've posted a little about it). So I've really had three children. Quite a dramatic thing to have in common, but something very woven into our lives now.

      • Life changing, but in a good way (0 / 0)

As horrible as our loss was, I cannot help but feel blessed with our life as it is now.  I think losing a baby made us appreciate our daughter even more when she arrived.

I often just say I have one child or that she's our first.  Other times I don't mind sharing the story of our son.  Most people have experienced losses of one sort or another, so my story usually resonates in some way.

        • Good now, for sure (0 / 0)

The loss has turned to good here, too. It's very amazing! I usually only say two children, mostly to save the embarassment for everyone. Unless we're having a family planning type chat...

Good luck with your adoption. We have friends who adopted a native American baby, Apache, and are having so much fun with him that they want a little girl in about another year. He's 12mos old now and so happy.

It's funny, their baby is so beautiful that all ethnicities want to claim him. Chinese people think he's Chinese, Latinos think he's Latino, Fillipino people think he's one of them. He's just this pretty happy little thing that everyone would like credit for. Quite a compliment, eh?

    • how's the new job (0 / 0)

I remember you saying last year that the part-time at home job was new... do you like it?

      • Loving it! (0 / 0)

It's perfect for me right now - great hours, stimulating, very kid-friendly.  Very fun.

I wonder if I'll circle back to healthcare some day, but for now this is perfect.  It's a much more natural fit with my current life, that's for certain!

    • i was wondering how your wait was going (0 / 0)

what are you doing to distract yourself :-) i understand it's hard to talk about the waiting!

      • Oh it is just awful! (0 / 0)

Talking about the waiting isn't so bad, but the waiting itself is rough.  Sometimes it doesn't bother me but other times it is almost maddening.

The program we are in tends to have ups and downs too.  You'll be presented with potential matches but the woman chooses a different family or decides to parent.  It's also a little tough being presented with potential medical conditions and needing to make a decision fairly quickly.

Even though it isn't rational I feel like we'll never have a placement.  Average wait time is 3-11 months and we've waited 4 months, so I don't have a good reason to feel the way I do.  Still, it is hard having so little control over the process.

        • you are completely rational! (0 / 0)

I'm with ya! waiting is so hard and seems so endless and you have no control over this part at all. Even tho we felt like there was going to be a positive outcome (adopting a child) through international adoption, we had 8 months of waiting.....for everything to happen....

  • Hi all! Glad to join in! (0 / 0)

I am a 38 year old WOHM.  We have two boys--5 and 2.  I teach 10th grade English (and currently have the great good fortune to teach three sections of IB English II).  Grew up in Michigan, got my BA from Kalamazoo College, studied in Germany for a year, then came back to the states to get an MAT at BU.  Taught at an alternative school for several years, then moved down to NC to be with the DH.

Came to MT via DKos, where DH is a frequent poster.  Love to read (though don't have much time except in summer).  Love to write (though don't have much time except in summer).  Love to cook, eat, drink wine and do yoga (those are easier to work into the daily routine).  Will be cheering enthusiastically for UNC during the NCAA Tournament this weekend!  Go Tarheels!

Check in here at MT most everyday to read, learn and enjoy.  This is the best group of moms around!

    • Forgot two important bits of info (0 / 0)

I'm a Lutheran-turned-Episcopalian and my favorite TV show is the new Battlestar Gallactica.  I'm a bit eclectic.

Middle of the mitten :-)  My family is still there...

      • my people are from the thumb (0 / 0)

My great granddad died in an iron mining elevator accident.  Iron Mountain, Iron River, Escanaba.  Mostly just names to me; I've never lived there.

      • Ahh...the mitten! (0 / 0)

You can always pick out the Michigan natives when the hold up their hand to use as a map!

I grew up on the eastern side of the state in GM country--Flint to be specific.  I've got very little family there anymore, so I haven't been back in a while.

        • I'm originally from NY state (0 / 0)

And I use my hand to describe where I'm from, although I make the shape of a gun. "If NY is the shape of a gun, I'm from the trigger." Goshen, NY to be specific.

Which, as some of you will likely sympathize with, is a tricky place to be from. I can't say "I'm from NY, as most people around the US will assume NYC. But if you say upstate NY - true upstaters like Lonestar Canuck and those above will dis you, as the Hudson River Valley isn't "really" upstate.

I jest, of course. It's all silly to me!

  • G'day! (0 / 0)

I'm a 30 something (not being coy...I really can't remember and it's early Saturday morning here) SAHM with two children. Lorian is now three and Rigel turns one in two weeks. My original life was in Virginia, where I grew up in a commune in a rural town and went to the University of Virginia. I got my degree in Biology and Environmental Science. Met my Aussie husband, who convinced me that it's easier to do a PhD overseas (he's SOOOO right!). We moved to Perth, Western Australia nearly ten years ago, intending to try it out. I guess we're here for good now! I did my PhD in Evolutionary Genetics and then had my first child. I've been at home for the last three years, and I mostly enjoy it. I do a bit of lecturing to keep my brain going, but I just can't stand the idea of child care, so I guess I'm stuck at home for a few more years! I'm not sure what I'll do with myself then, but I'm considering doing an MBA...maybe I'm just a permanent student. :)
We love reading, camping, hiking, traveling (although I'm dreading our trip back to the US in June...a one year old and a three year old doesn't sound like fun on a 28 hour plane trip!), and I can't remember what else. I have so little time for myself these days that I don't know what I like to do anymore... My husband is a wonderful computer geek who shares the parenting very well, and is actually the one who put me onto this site. Religion is such an insignificant part of our lives that I wouldn't mention it, except that other people have.I grew up UU, did my best to freak my mother out when I was 13 by getting myself baptised Southern Baptist (it really worked!), and have baptised my children into the Catholic church because I really didn't care, and it made the grandparents sooo happy.
I would dearly love to post a diary, but I'm still working up the courage. The one time that I thought I was brave enough, when I searched the files, someone had already posted! Oh well...I'll make it eventually!

    • why, oh why (0 / 0)

do we have to be on opposite ends of the continent, Aussieyank? I've been soooo hoping to have an MT meet up one day?!

      • Well... (0 / 0)

We plan to be in Melbourne in April...either over Easter holidays or over Anzac day. Want to meet up? I can't do anything about all the fun that the stateside people have together...

You get used to never being in the middle of things, living in Perth. Everything seems to happen on the east coast! Of course, it is kind of nice never having to deal with Olympics or Commonwealth Games. And most tourists don't make it this far!

  • My Turn (0 / 0)

What a great and large group gathered.

I am 52, married 25 years this April! I have 4 children (2 adult step sons, 39 & 36, a son in college 20, and a 10th grade daughter) and 5 grandchildren (7,5,3 & almost 2).  I am MIL to two special DILs!  To my great surprise and immeasurable gratitude, I have enjoyed and am enjoying wonderful relationships being a step-mom and a MIL.

We have a black lab, Scout, and a kitty named Nikki -- both are loves.

I was gainfully employed until my son was born when I was 32, daughter followed when I was 36.  I experienced 5 years of infertility prior to having children, along with all of its emotional terrain.

My dh retired in 2002 giving our family a tremendous gift of time together.

I grew up in Connecticut, went to school in Maine, moved to San Diego, worked at Sea World, married and moved to San Francisco, then La Canada, and finally here to the East Bay (San Francisco area).

I love photography and writing.  I love to read and travel and I live to be outdoors --- not camping mind you, just enjoying amazing displays of nature every single day.

My family recently celebrated our 36 yr old dil's journey back from bone cancer after 12 months of chemo and a 10 hour surgery in Feb from which she is currently recovering.  Having lost my own Mum to cancer, and having a bout with it myself, I am humbled by what those experiences brought to my life.

    Two wonderful quotes I love:

What the caterpillar calls the end of the world, the master calls the butterfly..

    and,

He who mounts a wild elephonat goes where the wild elephant goes.

So glad to be among all the MTers!  :>)

  • my bio (0 / 0)

I'm a verging-on-30 (March 29!) WAHM to 21-month-old Jess. I'm a freelance financial journalist (that status may change incipently - watch this space, as they say) and currently live in Melbourne, Australia. (DH is Aussie - terrible how these Australians meet and bring home partners. Like Scientologists, without the weird religion, and with beer, beaches and good times...) We've had a wanderlusty time together - we met in 1999 when I was a senior at Boston University (where I met both Elisa and Jen "Littlepear". Jen's DH was one of my best friends, and Jen and I lived together straight out of BU. I wouldn't say you're a bad housekeeper, ex-roomie!) We moved to Paris in 2000, and London in 2002, where, among other things, I did a masters at the London School of Economics.

We're more or less here in Melbourne permanently, but my heart lusts towards another expatriation - somewhere in Asia, hopefully. Planning for #2 sometime later this year, all things being equal!

  • May a newbie say hi? :) (0 / 0)

I've been lurking around for a month or so, and actually just made an account since this seemed like the ideal time to introduce myself. :)  I'm an elementary music teacher in the SF Bay area, but my husband and I are going to relocate to the Pacific Northwest this summer, once our first child (a boy!) is born.  I'm a Mother-Talker-To-Be, I guess. :)  I'm looking at taking next year off to stay home with the Sprout; I suspect whether or not I go cukoo being home with the baby and the cat will determine how quickly I head back for the classroom.  As far as politics and religion, I'm an atheist, married to an atheist, and very much a bleeding-heart liberal.  Currently I'm reading about newborns and wondering (here in the beginning of my third trimester) where on earth my ankles have gone...

    • Welcome! (0 / 0)

and I understand about the ankles. Toward the end of my pregnancy I could not wear shoes if I didn't put them on first thing in the morning, because of all the swelling. Thank goodness it goes down after you have the baby!

good luck with the rest of your pregnancy!

    • congrats on your impending (0 / 0)

motherhood - and welcome! hope your ankles return soon :>)

    • welcome and congratuations (0 / 0)

Hope you're enjoying the pregnancy (ankles aside). I loved feeling like a goddess and very much enjoyed being pregnant. So glad you've joined us!
