Weekly Race Training Diary w/o 10/8

Mon Oct 08, 2007 at 01:32:52 PM PDT

Whilst Rachel takes a well deserved rest day, I'll post this diary.

This diary is for sharing any training plans for the week. No matter what your goal is, we're here for you!

I've had a bit of a recurrence of my ankle woes, but I think it's just a signal that I need new running shoes. So, I'll try to address that situation this week.

One exciting thing that just happened within the hour is that a birthday present arrived for me from my sister -- and it's a Nike+ iPod system! So, I am stoked to start hearing Lance Armstrong's encouraging words very soon.

  • Hi, all (0 / 0)

this is my first post to one of these threads. I am almost a non-exerciser. I just don't enjoy it. I hear people talk about working out their stress and feeling better when they are through, and I don't really get that concept at all.

A couple of years ago I tried to get into a walking program with some other moms in the neighborhood. I could never keep up -- they walked too fast for my out of shape and overweight self. Later I learned that I had severe anemia, which causes shortness of breath -- no wonder I could never keep up and never felt like I was getting in better shape despite walking 4 days a week for four months.

Now I am starting again -- gearing up for the Komen walk in November in honor of my friend Tina, who is one tough cookie! So my goal is to walk 3 miles at least 3 times this week.

I did it last week, so I know I can do it again.

thanks for letting me run on~

  • Thanks, Hillary! (0 / 0)

Much obliged to my sister running MT for stepping up!

I'm definitely taking it easy this week; I did 30 minutes of biking and 10 minutes walking at the gym yesterday just to unkink the muscles, and it was very helpful. My right shin is still kinda sore, and my left pinkie toe is mangled, but aside from that, recovery is good.

My problem now is what do I do - I have this terrible anticlimactic feeling now that I don't have a goal to train for!

    My week:

    Mon: Rest/XT (see above)
Tuesday: easy run (just two miles to get things ticking again)
    Wed: Swim class with Jess
Thurs: easy run (I'm cancelling the gym session as I have a meeting in the city, so I'll run outside)
    Fri: gym session.
    Sat: rest
Sun: Run. I'm just looking forward to a no-pressure, fun 90 minutes!

  • Week 6 of 9! Still going! (0 / 0)

Saturday was rough. I'm in the Chicago suburbs, and my schedule was such that Saturday afternoon was the only time I could run Friday or Saturday. Turns out to have been a bad time to try -- it was no different on Saturday than it was Sunday, so it was a horrible run. I couldn't finish it, and it was only 18 mins total of running. (Too hot/humid -- the same that they stopped the marathon for on Sunday.)

Ran again today, total of 20 mins, and had no trouble at all. Of course, a cold front had come through, so it was almost 20 degrees cooler!

About 6.5 weeks until Thanksgiving, and my first 5K since my high school years!

BTW, no thoughts whatsoever of trying a marathon anytime soon....

  • Hillary... (0 / 0)

How did you get miles to run the 5K w/you?  I've asked Grant if he'd like to run a race w/me and he's iffy.  Did Miles have to train?

Also... regarding the Nike+ system.  Do you have to have Nike shoes?  Because I just love my New Balance shoes and I'd hate to switch.  But, the whole Nike+ system sounds awesome and I'd love to get one for Christmas.

My week:  Okay... I'm pooped.  I think my reading of Sleepless in America is really timely, because Madeline is on a sleep strike!  Seriously... this kid fights going to sleep at night, and the past couple of days has gotten me up at 6:30am.  That may not sound early to most of you... but I'm used to 7:45am.  I've also done something to my left elbow and can't do yoga until it heals.  It's extremely sore right in the joint.  I'm planning a trip to the chiropractor tomorrow to check it out.

    So....
Mon: 3 miles easy run/XT Pilates
    Tues: Pilates
Wed: 3 miles easy run/XT Pilates
    Thur: Pilates
Fri: 6.2 miles run/walk, weather permitting
    Sat: Pilates

    • waking early (0 / 0)

I hear you, Hil. We've finally gotten Jess into a great bedtime routine, but with the sun rising earlier, she's now waking earlier. It's the bloody birds outside her window in the tree. This morning she got up at 5.40! And lord love a cow, she's into constant narration now, so while she's happy to entertain herself, she comes into our bed and starts talking and asking questions! Argh!

      • Well, I had (0 / 0)

Madeline in a great bedtime routine.  Something's disrupted it and I can't put my finger on it.  So frustrating!!!  Those early wake times are a killer.  I do not do well with that, as I'm not a morning person.

I'm just chalking it up to some sort of phase.  It'll pass...hopefully soon!

        • how old is Madeline now? (0 / 0)

I believe that for Jess, it's seasonal, but who knows?!

          • She's (0 / 0)

4 1/2, and will be 5 in January.  I think her mind is working overtime, processing the events of the day or something.  Grant went through the same thing right around this age.  With him, I just rode it out because I also had an infant to take care of.  Plus, DH wasn't working as much and could help out more.

            • someone made a point before (0 / 0)

about 1/2 year dissonance - that for whatever reason, kids (based on empirical evidence) seem to find processing information to be a real challenge around the 1/2 mark. For us, it's hard to tell because Jess's half year also falls around Christmas! And last year, in January, we were in Thailand and had my folks down to Australia. Jess had some spectacular temper tantrums and chaotic reactions, but it was hard to tell if that was because she was at the 1/2 year, or because were in a totally unfamiliar environment. (I must say, given that we were in a totally unfamiliar environment, she did brilliantly in Thailand and talks about going back because she wants to see Buddha, elephants and "Khun Sky," the day manager at the hotel we stayed in at Chaing Mai. They were buddies; the lady would take Jess behind the reception desk and let her loose.)

I'll be on the lookout for this this year; should help that Jess can really verbalize feelings and such now.

        and a white noise machine?

        • That's exactly (0 / 0)

what we have in Madeline's room LOL.  For some reason, it's not working!  I did notice a big difference when we put blackout blinds in her room 2 years ago.  She definitely got up later.

    • phooey! (0 / 0)

I posted a comment yesterday but clearly it didn't make it through the Internets Tubes....

Okay, shorter version of how Miles came to run the 5K.  Last year, I ran this particular 5K (The Celtic Classic) and Miles said he wanted to run it next time with me.  So, I said, we'll have to train you and we started doing the occasional run together, nothing major.  Then in the spring, both boys expressed interest in running on the track at a local university and we did that a few times.  Fast forward to the weekend of my ill-fated half marathon, and the boys ran the special Saucony Run For Good kids' race the day before.  They loved it.  Each ran in their age group, so Miles had to run a half mile.  He's not fast, he's definitely mid-pack when he stays focused.  Anyway, during the summer, our local Road Runners club organizes a kids' racing series in a local park which we signed the boys up for and they did those races about every other week when we were in town.  Again, Miles really enjoyed it.  He would get a little distracted by the "Planet Walk" along the route ("Mommy, I took a little walk break around Mercury") but he always finished strong!

So, fall rolled around and the tents started going up for the Celtic Classic weekend (music, highland games, tons of fun), and Miles said, "Mommy! I want to run the 5K!"  I was a bit concerned since we'd not really trained him past running about 2 miles total with breaks, but I figured, worse came to worse we would walk and I knew this was a family friendly race because I had seen kids run it before.

For his perspective on it, you can read his blog.  Perhaps Grant might enjoy reading that and get inspired.

As for the Nike+iPod system, no you don't have to give up your shoes.  They sell sensor pouches that you weave into your laces.

      Sorry so long!

      • Very interesting! (0 / 0)

I will have Grant look it over.  He expressed an interest in running the 4 miler in our town, but I don't think he was prepared enough for it.  Something like a 5K would probably be easier to begin with.

There's a race coming up on Turkey Day with a Gobbler Chase... which is less than a 1/4 of a mile.  And for the adults?  The giveaway includes a bottle of wine for all the participants.  That gets my vote!

    • Nike+ system--you don't need Nikes (0 / 0)

Here's a doo-dad that you can use to strap the sensor to any running shoe.

Here's what I use. I bought a navy blue one to match my Brooks running shoes! It has worked very well for me.
