I wannit

Tue Jan 09, 2007 at 04:37:58 PM PDT

I am not too up on the latest cell phones/techie things. I only recently got an iPod, and rarely use my cell phone. I'm the worst IMer, and feel years older than I am when I see people IMing...I think about how unappealing that is to me!

And yet. I've been a Mac geek since high school, so when I saw this today, I couldn't help but instantly want one! It's the new iPhone, which is brought to us by those clever Apple people. It combines the cell phone with an iPod with iLife (photos, email, calendar, IM). It's super sleek...no buttons, all touch screen. Sigh. Maybe someday when it's not $599 I'll be able to get it. Until then I'll just have to walk slowly by the Apple store wistfully, like I did before I got my iPod.

  • LOL.... (0 / 0)

As I'm sitting here right now, my husband is watching Job's presentation on his computer (a MAC, ofcourse)...I just heard him say "I'm gonna get one of those!".....
  • It IS totally cool.. (0 / 0)

I am off to Vegas tomorrow to the CES show...yes I have been going now for...can you believe, 27 years!
  • Not getting what you want... (0 / 0)

is the worst.  I'm serious.  I'm even less aware than you are--I almost never text message and haven't even heard of those mac thingies, but I sure do hate walking by stores that have things I want and can't have in them.  Now I'm making a face.  At the world of expensive things.
    • I know! (0 / 0)

Especially because I am usually very disciplined about gadgets...I'm the opposite of a trendsetter. I'll wait until something has been around for ages before I join the party. CDs? Swore I'd never use them. Cell Phones? Was last in line for one of those things, and still hardly use it besides meet-me-here-at-this-time stuff. A former colleague used to beg for BlackBerrys at our old office, and I thought she was crazy! Why would I want someone to be able to reach me all the time, or worse, expect me to be available 24-7?

But the iPhone is so purty. I think I'm sold because it runs OS X, so I see it like a mini-Mac. I already had a little upgrade I can see in the future -- an iCam, just like the newer Macs have built in. So you and your family can have video phones!

  • AND... (0 / 0)

How cool to know you'd never get lost again! Looking for directions to someone's house? Google maps! No need to install a GPS system in your car! Wandering around an unfamiliar part of town looking for that knitting shop (this is me in a nutshell)? Type in the store name and you have a map/directions in the palm of your hand!

    Ok, I'm done now.

  • not until.... (0 / 0)

no way i will be getting one of these until the service options open up.

i am very happy with and loyal to tmobile. cingular is boooooooo in my book, they were very rude to me once.

so, i guess that is good, i cant afford one yet anyway, hah!

    • same here (0 / 0)

I know, no one should have to spend $599 to have only one service option! It will probably take a year or so before everything is wide open to other plans, and the price drops. I have T-Mobile, too, and have never had any problems.
  • Skeptical (0 / 0)

They are way too expensive right now I think.

I also am skeptical about merging things together, at least when it involves an iPod.

My iPod's battery went so early and then the buttons didn't work anymore, that if I had it connected to my cell, I would have had to buy a cell phone again essentially.

But I do agree it is cool looking!

My technology-eagerness ended back in 1996, I swear.  I got a cell phone, an email account, an iPod, a digital camera and I am DONE.  Everything else that happened after that is not happening here!

  • One thing less (0 / 0)

I'm all about combining things into one piece technologically. It bugs me that my DH and I still have a land line telephone at our house AND cell phones. Just this past summer I got a Blackberry, so I could get rid of the PDA (mine was one of the first Visors, so it was ancient anyway) and because I wanted to link it into my Outlook calendar (which I have at work and depend on for the Reminder function and use for personal and work stuff).
And lately I've been looking at the phones that have the music function as well, since I have an IPod.
So this looks like heaven to me. My phone, my IPod, my address book, my calendar, all in one thing. Woo hoo!
But ditto to the one service carrier thing. I have Verizon and I kinda like them.

    • But I don't text message (0 / 0)

I too hate the concept of being available 24-7, or that people, including DH, expect me to be available 24-7. Text messaging just seems superfluous. Just call. Or email. Text messaging seems mere convenience.
And i have just one friend that I IM with cause they're in FL and we're both always on our computers.

      • Don't get it (0 / 0)

        I don't get IMing either.

I'd rather email or call. If you need to make immediate plans, call on the cell phone.  If you just want to chat with no urgency, email.

        • text messaging advantage... (0 / 0)

you can text message someone on the run without having to have a public phone conversation.  so for instance if you are not at home on your computer, but out and you don't want to annoy someone with public phone convo...text messaging is just the thing. it's quick, it's silent and not meant for long convos.
  • Love Macs but I also use a Filofax (0 / 0)

Yes, that's right .... a Filofax, with a calendar for the year and addresses handwritten and crossed out when people move. I do have about a dozen people programmed in my cell phone, but some of them are misspelled and I can't be bothered to go fix them.

I love Apple products, always have. A few years back they came out with a cube shaped harddrive and I totally wanted that! Does anyone remember that cube?? I don't have an iPod though. Overall I just don't want to shell out the money.

And IMing? I told one of my best friends, who is 36 and single in NYC, that if he is dating someone young enough that they IM to set up dates, it's already over. But I can't convince him that IMing in the  early stages is inane. I have no credibility because of the Filofax.

No TV, no cell phone, no PDA, no iPod.

But, yeah, I was definitely drooling a bit while listening to the description of the iPhone on NPR this afternoon.

    This too shall pass. ;-)
