Social Justice & Activism Thread for Week of 1/15

Sun Jan 14, 2007 at 09:30:03 PM PDT

Editor's Note: A very appropriate thread in memory of Martin Luther King, Jr.. Thank you, Rachel! -Elisa

If you have a pet cause or a project you dream about but don't quite get to, despite best intentions, this thread is for you.

It's a three month experiment wherein we post our ideas, our progress, and even our setbacks on some personal change - large or small - for social justice. A little support can go a long way toward realizing our goals.

I'll post the thread every other Monday.

  • Ok, tiny steps (0 / 0)

Some action taken: I bought green dishwasher and laundry stuff (noting that it cost almost double the nongreen stuff unfortunately, the brand was Planet at Safeway). I found a children's consignment shop near where I run errands, so that was a find.

Checked out a couple of websites recommended here: Alittlegreener and BuyBlue, both of which are great practical resources for changing buying habits for environmental and political reasons. I learned that I could be looking for organic cotton products instead of focusing on consignment, so that was helpful.

Did our annual giving. Dh and I came up with a budget and a small group of organizations and we're sticking with those, that's it. Cuts down on guilt and wavering when we get all of those solicitations in the mail. (If our resident development MTs toss 'em, that's what I'm going to do!).

Didn't do anything regarding finding a place to volunteer some time, so that's up this time.

  • I wrote (0 / 0)

I wrote that I was going to try to buy less in the aim of lightening my clutter, all that.

I did well, but I think I still spent too much and bought too much.

I'm going to give the "Buy Nothing (or a lot less)" for the next two weeks another shot.

    • Try my patented single mom on a tiny budget (0 / 0)

approach.  when I grocery shop I take out some cash for the week. never more than $20.  That's it.  I can not spend any more than that on 'stuff'  - if something comes up that I NEED To buy (ie: replacing my printer cartridge which happened this weekend) I can do it but I never ever ever ever "shop just to shop" anymore.  I stay out of stores unless on a mission.   I also budget a minmum of $200-400  out of every other paycheck into my savings with the long term goal of taking the child to disney in 2 years when she's nine..so I feel I'm saving for something fun.  I've told myself no new clothes until May at the earliest.  But seriously, limiting myself to the cash in my wallet goes a LONG way -- making grocery lists and sticking to them helps too and avoiding stores as recreation is the biggest!

On $55K a year I make, shouldering a mortgage, car payment, condo fees, and afterschool costs ....there is no room for extras! You can do it!

  • I bought only organic (0 / 0)

apples, pears, and peppers for the past two weeks.  The apples and pears are a big deal--we eat A LOT of those fruits.  The organic is about fifty-cents more per pound than the conventional.
  • deciding (0 / 0)

on landscaping for our playground. We're feeling badly for tearing out a couple of medium aged blue oaks, so there will definitely be at least two trees planted. We're going with all natives, drought resistant stuff, because we like those and also because there isn't a really reliable water source for getting them established.

Have done nothing at home, except not used cleaning products at my usual rate.

  • Just ordered (0 / 0)

a tumbling composter.  I have every intention of actually putting all that nutritious food trash back in the earth where it belongs, not in the garbage can!
  • love the idea of getting (0 / 0)

thoughts/ideas out here in space helping to bring all to fruition.

my pet peeve is activism oriented i guess...much of my volunteering has been centered on character education in schools along with better education on the topic of risky behavior, be it underage drinking, drinking & driving, drugs in general, sexuality, etc.  i have long worked to ensure parents have more clarity around their own behavior and become better educated so they can help their children and communities.  i spent lots of time helping campaign locally for better funding in public schools.

what interests me now is being aware of the many ways i, and my family, can make differences in  daily habits which will conserve resources.  we try to be mindful of using green products.  we just bought a hybrid car which i am quite excited about.  it's a kick to not have to fill up the tank for months --- and to be able to purchase the cheaper fuel.

i have on my list to rent Al Gore's movie...i want to be sure to see that.

that's it for me right now.

  • activism recently... (0 / 0)

much of my activism in last couple of years have centered around teen issues in our community of lamorinda. upon moving to the community i immediately reached out and joined the high school's parents club and volunteered for the parent education committee.  i started a parents blog and got very involved in a new committee called healthy choices.  i have also gotten involved in local orinda politics and with the arts council.  i have always been politically active in the democratic party.

this new year i am changing course a bit. i am resigning from all of the high school parent club activities and have ceased participation in the arts council.  i will continue to blog. i have decided to start my own volunteer activities and to organize on my own.  initially this decision was motivated by frustration.  however, now i am focused on activities that are direct and not committee based.  to that end my family and i are volunteering every weekend at Glide Memorial.  we hope others will join us.

we too are enviromentally focused.  i ditched my hot little Infinity G35 coupe and bought a toyota hybrid. i am exploring potential career change that would entail marketing of new environmentally sound products or philanthropic new media ventures. i will continue my democratic party work....hmm although if the Guv here in California keeps it up, i might work for his causes :)

my motto this year is directly helping people and causes i believe in.  i will avoid groups and organizations that are plagued with paralyzing social dynamics and focus on those who can get the job done.

  • Does something already in progress count? (0 / 0)

I'm a key member of a community group in my town that's fighting the expansion of a hazardous waste landfill - trying to get it closed altogether.

There's a bunch of stuff going on right now, I'm happy to share. Do y'all want to hear about it?

  • Just came back from a MLK Jr march (0 / 0)

It was quite a beautiful day.  Lots of families there and a great food spread afterward.  Our daughter (2) was a bit overwhelmed by all the people but seemed to adjust just fine.  I think next year we'll try to volunteer with the food service portion of the day.

As for my goals -- more ecologically & socially responsible at home and getting personally involved rather than just giving $$ -- let's see:

    1.  I'm trying to get us set up to get our chicken and pork from the same local, organic farmer who raises the cattle that we have in our freezer.  We can get eggs in our CSA box.

    2.  We're upgrading to a gas hot water heater that's the most efficient we've been able to find.  On demand was just too pricey so we skipped it this time.

    3.  We put a storm door on the back door -- aaahhh, much warmer!

    4.  I still need to get off my bum on Sundays and head over to the local UU church near us.

    and, finally....

    5.  Volunteering in person.  This one's a bit tougher as my daughter is still settling into preschool and needing a bit more attention.  We'll be doing two days per week though so hopefully she'll settle in and I'll be able to do some work while she's in school.

We still have some biggies left - especially insulating the attic.  It just seems like a daunting task.

  • Enjoying all of these projects! (0 / 0)

I love to hear about all of these projects, in progress and all. I'm really impressed by the energy and dedication it takes to pull them off. Thanks for the support, Elisa!

  • One other little thing (0 / 0)

I sent an email to JC Penney to protest their selling jackets trimmed with raccoon dog fur.  The jackets were originally labeled as containing raccoon fur, not raccoon dog fur, and they were pulled from shelves when it was brought to Penney's attention.  Apparently the fur is harvested in extremely inhumane ways, but Penney's decided to put them back on the shelves anyway and just cross out "raccoon" on the labels.  Story is at: http://www.chron.com/...

Penney's is one of the few clothing stores in my town, but they won't be getting another dime from me if that's the way they run their business.

  • I accepted an invitation to join the board (0 / 0)

of the New Hampshire Women's Lobby - a grassroots organization that lobbys the state leg on bills that affect women and children. The big issue right now is the divorce health access project -- trying to ensure that a divorce does not leave women and children without healt insurance coverage...

it's a step out of my "I only work in and for the arts' nine dots and it's a learning curve for me but I think I'm going to like it!

    • I'm on the board (0 / 0)

of my local ACLU chapter. We work on local initiatives, one of which is to establish a support network for GLBT school children. We're working as a support for the organization that is actually coordinating the whole system, but it's looking good.
