Remember all the pictures that were posted WAAAAY back in the fall when all your really adorable kids were going off on their first day of school?

I had wanted to share a picture of ds standing in our driveway about to depart for his second year of college, but i didn't know how to post a pic....but,

I finally figured it out, late bloomer that I am. Share my joy at the following pic...and have a glimpse of what is in store for all of you down the road.

They do grow up!

I tried this one other time and it bombed, so I am signing off and posting.

I sure do miss him.

Wow, they do get big and grown, don't they?
My husband and I were at a cocktail party tonight and one of our trustees was discussing raising her son with us. He is 22 and 6'5" tall and very handsome, like one of Princess Diana's children.
Anyway, she was enjoying telling us what it's like when they go from being little like ours to being big. It was a blast to hear her stories of how funny and fun a big bunch of boys can be hanging out in your living room.

Congratulations Mami on raising a confident, college student. I understand what you mean about bittersweet first days of school. I swore up and down I would not be one of those moms who broke down, but I did cry Ari's first week of school. I bet the feelings only compound over the years.
Still, you deserve a pat on the back...He looks like a great kid.

  I had the same reaction, Karen - hottie, love the smile, looks like a very kind young man! But it felt a bit weird, telling a fellow mom that her son is totally hot!

    big and grown up he is...we've always had a great open dialog which has helped us ease into his being a total man now, but it is sort of a curious feeling to look at his picture and realize how GROWN UP and handsome he has become...his school pictures are such an evolution and so precious...be sure to save all the school pics...we've never had them done over because i love it when some are just goofy...with our dd too, some of hers are just classic school goofy photos.

  Always bittersweet for me. I have a photo from years ago of Alex on his first day of first grade and Nick starting his junior year of high school. Alex is facing the camera with his backpack on, hair all combed, nice shirt and a huge grin on his face. Nick has his back to the camera, shoulders hunched, hoodie sweatshirt with backpack over it.     broadly? he comes home soon - i have missed him so much these last several weeks. i really yearn to have him here inside our home....can't wait.
    i was in san diego lately and i visited him at his dorm for the first time since he has been at college. we went to Costco for a huge food run for his 3 roommates and him....hilarious...we bought more meat than i think i have ever purchased in one fell swoopo; and he demonstrated to me "the way" to shop at Costco. I found it to be so endearing and hilarious.
    they had cleaned up their dorm rooms in anticpation of my visit (2 bedrooms with common area and small studio type kitchen)-- they had hung white lights and snowflakes from the ceiling and had wreaths hanging on their doors. Color me amazed and joyful at seeing their gusto for life and friendship and witnessing his personal growth. good stuff.

      The guys I went to college with would just dump all their bongs in my room and try to freshen it up for the 20 minutes they'd allow their parents in their dorm room. Decorating and hanging out? Not for those self-absorbed brats. You should be very proud of your son...hell, I'm proud for you!

        have you been gone? thanks for the comment...it comes just at the right time as lately i've been drumming my foot and tapping my fingers thinking he's been home loooong enough....kind of kidding, but a bit of truth too.
        having an "adult" child in the home for longer than a long weekend can get on a person....he's out of college for 5 weeks! damn..that's a long time.
        we've locked horns a couple of times already, but mostly it's all good. i do love the boy that's for sure...and thank G*d for that, cause if I didn't I'm not sure what would happen.

        Between crazy clients and that house, we've been busy, not to mention now that we live closer to our friends they just drop on by and expect us to drop everything to entertain them for 4 or 5 hours. I'm like, "Get a hammer, get a paint brush or get out of my house."
        As for your kid, it's funny I was talking with two friends yesterday about going back home after not living with your parents. Those 2 are in their early 40s and have gone to stay with their parents recently (one switched years between Benin and here, the other for 4 months while the tenant got out of the house). They both agreed that no matter how much they got into with their parents during their school breaks, it was much worse at age 36.

        hope my kids won't be coming home to stay at 36 .. but you never know.
        it's interesting about what you say about those friends and how worse it gets the older one gets.
        our situation is unique right now. we have a son 36 whose wife is in the middle of fighting bone cancer. they have two daughters, ages 4 and 18 months. we have spent a ton of time with them, sleeping many nights in the room of the baby while on trips to san diego to help with all that their battle entails.
        i marvel at how well we have all worked together in their time of need. we've been at it for the last 12 months. either my dh or i travel to san diego every 2 weeks or as needed and stay with them...it's been lovely and i know they think so as well.
        it's funny how lucky i feel our family is even in the midst of devastating circumstances. i'm thankful for our relationships that help us help each other.

  i have treasured being mom to both my kids .. even those awkward stages were classic and had their own bits of gold....certainly there were trying days, but far and away so many more times that I cherish and that i could only have had by being a parent. it is a great ride i wouldn't trade for anything.

The day I left for college is a memory that is so very clear in my mind. It's such a huge step, I don't think I'll ever forget it. And, yes, first day of school no matter what grade is bittersweet!!
I guess I'm emotional, but I get chocked up every year. I think I'll fall to pieces when my youngest starts kindergarten. It'll be the end of an era... no more "babies" at home!

  But my kids are 16, 14, and 10, so we have done the first day of school a lot of times, so the whole bittersweet thing is pretty much over for me...until my oldest kid goes away to college. I hate that idea...
  When our youngest went to kindergarten, she wanted to ride on the bus with her big brothers, so I had to meet my husband in the school parking lot so we could find the bus and get the three kids and escort each of them to their class...I don't remember, but I am sure I was sad those first few days when Tess was gone all day.

    the empty house during the day! And, that it's the end of those baby/young children days filled with story-times at the library, parks, and the preschool programs they have at the museums and metro parks. I know we'll still do things together... but it will be different.
