I was very late--I was 15. Oddly enough, my mother actually asked me on the day I got my first period if I had started menstruating and not told her, because she was getting ready to take me to the doctor. This conversation was held in a store, while we were looking at clothes, so it was very low key. And yes, I was crazy uncomfortable, and probably wouldn't have told her if she hadn't asked.
My question is, is there any way to prepare our daughters for this without making them uncomfortable and unwilling to share the news? I'd really like to help my daughter not be as grossed out as I was. Thoughts?

try 16 and a couple of months! I felt like a freak - and then felt like even more of a freak because I went from having no boobs or hips or period to all of the above in, like, 3 months. I literally finished sophomore year in an A cup and came back as a junior with a C cup, plus grew two inches!

but I did wonder when it was gonna happen. And suffered the slings and arrows of being called "ironing board chest".
I wonder how it'll turn out for Jess; both DH and I hit puberty late, so I'm presuming that it'll be similar for her.

but I started my period in 8th grade, and my DD started summer before 6th grade....so I don't know. Seems like it is all happening earlier these days.

mother/daughter moment with Karina. Of course, we had been talking about it for a while. What I did (before she started) is go to the store with her and had her pick out her own supplies. I bought her everything she needed. We discussed hygiene, keeping track of your period to avoid embarrassing accidents, and everything associated with periods, including cramps. When she started her period (on Christmas Eve 2006) she called me into the bathroom and told me. I handed her one of the pads we had bought for her and reminded her how to put it on and waited for her outside. When she came out, I hugged her and cried my eyes out. I don't even know why.
