into the birth order stereotypes. I am 2nd of two, and only 11.5 mos. younger than my brother. I never felt like I was 'the baby.'
My DH has a hard time even articulating where he is in birth order. His oldest brother died just after birth. Second brother was without oxygen for some time the first few days of his life and as a result, was severely mentally handicapped and eventually lived in an institution. So is DH 3rd of 3, 2nd of two or an only child?
I think parents who have several kids probably do rely on the older ones to do more, and probably do relax rules on the younger ones. I would suspect that if I had another kid now, I might relax some rules not out of tiredness, or a desire to spoil, but because "I have figured out a better way to parent."

by the time you get to the younger ones, you have figured out "a better way", but often that "better way" just means not sweating the small stuff so much. I can see where this can be confused with parents "being easier" on younger children.
And I'm the first to admit that after having a few kids and seeing that whatever it was I was doing seemed to be working ok, well, I relaxed.

[ Parent ]
a friend and I were just talking yesterday about how some stuff that seems like you are letting younger kids "get away with" stuff is really more a matter of the parents deciding, "you know, that wasn't such a big deal, I probably could have let the kids do that."

I'm thinking your husband's parents believe they had three kids, and your dh is the youngest of 3.

I would say your DH is probably most like a firstborn/only, who actually have a lot in common.

I meant in personality. Clearly he is one of three children, and the youngest at that.

I think he is, personality-wise, more like an only, but of course he is 3rd of three kids.
I am just grateful that after the tragedies with the first two, his parents tried one more time!
