Comments: Expand Shrink Hide (Always) | Indented Flat (Always)
Having had a mother who was American Indian raised in Georgia, I have a history with grits. Always thought they were a bit strange. Mother thought it weird that I liked hominy, but was hesitant about grits, since in her estimation, grits were just hominy that looked like someone had already chewed them up.
Thanks Mom. It's been at least 25 years since I've been able to look at grits without my stomach lurching just a bit.

Horrors! Myself, I had to gnaw the hominy in the menudo in a kind of grin and bear it sort of way. Chewy white bastards!!! But the tripe in the soup??? Deelicious.
I know. I'm a freak.

I CANNOT eat menudo. I will eat pozole until the cows come home, but I Just. Don't. Get. Menudo.
The hominy is the only thing I will eat when it comes to menudo. :-)

what menudo is. Except a pop band that I had a crush on as a pre-teen...

"Menudo is a wonderfully aromatic soup made of tripe, hominy and chili, and is stewed for hours with garlic and other spices."

skip the tripe and it might sound tasty...

skip the tripe. I liked it as a kid, but I don't think I knew what it was. That may be the secret! Pozole is also quite good, similar.

for loving tripe. Had to wiki it to find out what it was, and the descriptions made my eyes bug out of my head. 0_0 You are a brave and daring woman.

Its not daring if they feed it to you as a kid. I also ate alligator, turtle, rabbit, brains, liver, oysters, crabs... stuff that only seems exotic to feed a toddler in retrospect. My parents were very young, very adventurous eaters.

a mental thing with me. Something happened when I was pregnant for the first time - I developed the world's queaziest stomach. I swear I couldn't handle anything more adventurous than salad and oatmeal. I can remember eating wasna after my son's naming and almost barfing, even though I'd eaten it countless times before. I was forced into vegetarianism.
You can imagine what happened a couple of years ago after I accepted a double-dog-dare from my kids to eat frog's legs.

I'd forgotten! Yep. Add that to the list. Better than chicken wings in my opinion.
In high school actually (and this did not coincide with any pg) I became very queasy and finicky with food. That was when I became a vegetarian. Then when I did get pg (age 26) We were driving by a McDonalds and I forced my husband to cut across traffic so I could get a cheeseburger.
Now I'm more omnivirous with a lighter meat appetite with this pregnancy...
I swear for me its all hormonal!
Also, good on you for taking the occasional "double dog dare", especially from the kiddoes! Awesome!

It is actually the phrase a high school teacher of mine used to describe our college town in a southern state.
Grits are a bit strange, but actually with some shrimp they can be fantastic.
