Lex Ave train and a cross town bus. I am sure he was well within the upper east side - midtown area which is generally safer than say Harlem or the Heights.
I lived on the upper west side and i saw kids all the time on the subway, riding the bus, etc. How do they get to school otherwise? Most middle class parents don't have cars to take them to school at least they didn't in my part of town.
Just in case, I would have followed the first time. But then again, ask my why I don't live in NYC anymore? Cuz I have kids....lol

Were kids really the reason you left NY? Seems like people are choosing to stay more with kids now. I've heard people say they were surprised at how kid-friendly NYC was when they visited with their kids.

but i had no desire to live in the City with children. IMO, if you are not rich, the city leaves a lot to be desired. Don't get me wrong though, the city affords lots of other opportunities that are amazing. I intend for my children to see many of them, but they don't have to live there to get the benefit. (I have family just north of the city so we can hop into town when we come to visit - like this summer.) Just saying, visiting with kids is not living in the city with kids. Just wasn't my cup of tea, that's all.

I never ended up living in New York although I thought I would at some point. I've always loved visiting though. We took my son the last time we were in NJ visiting my parents. It was really fun. In fact, our big adventure with him was riding the subway to Brooklyn!

I think it might be my favorite thing about NYC. Ofcourse, I have a map obsession that the subway system allows me to fully indulge.

I love it too, except at rush hour in the summertime. Stinky!

map, then. I think it's actually beautiful and almost cubist. And I love the hub-and-spoke layout of the Paris metro map.
There's an interesting poll - which city has the best map of their public transport. I think hands down, London.
