She wasn't always a sexpot, she started out as more of a rocker chick and plays a mean guitar. She really is very talented and her Spanish lyrics are to die for.

  that her image has been constructed that way though. When I pick women to listen to I usually stay away from anyone using sex to sell - so to know that she's a real songwriter and guitarist makes a difference to me. I hold a strange place in the music marketplace where I want my artists to be musicians and not carefully created images.

    She made her crossover right after the whole "Latin Explosion"-- i.e. Ricky Martin, Jennifer Lopez. I am guessing the powers that be decided the Colombian girl with the funny accent had to be sexy in order to go mainstream. I am guessing the fact that she's smokin' hot helped her get noticed by American consumers, but I was a bit puzzled as the Shakira I knew was so different (not to mention brunette!).
