Saturday Morning Open Thread

What’s up?

First, an update on the potty-training front. Eli pooped in the potty for the first time yesterday! She had peeing down pat so her only accidents had to do with poop. She has been diaper-free exactly one week today, including at night. I am declaring her potty-trained, and I am officially out of the diaper-changing phase of my child-rearing years. Woo-hoo!

Attention Bay Area moms: A group of us at MomsRising will be on hand to give Wal-Mart a demerit badge for penalizing workers for taking sick days. We will meet this Wednesday at the Wal-Mart in Oakland at 8400 Edgewater Drive at 10:15 a.m.. The rally should last no more than an hour. Please join us!

From the “duh” files: Eight in 10 Americans of both parties oppose the Supreme Court decision to allow corporations and unions to spend as much as they want on political campaigns, according to the Washington Post.

A school district in Pennsylvania is being sued for spying on its students via a webcam on their laptop computers, according to the blog Boing Boing. The school district issued the laptops to its high school students and is allegedly checking up on and even taking disciplinary actions against them for off-campus deeds. Creepy.

Erika update: I spoke to her this week and she sounds great, albeit a little tired. For the most part, Baby Alex cries only when he is hungry, and at times, has only woken a couple times in the middle of the night. We agreed that this was pretty good for a newborn. Also, we agreed that he is one handsome little man. He doesn’t look like a newborn!

Also, in case you are not on Facebook, our baker baker had her baby this week. She had a precious baby girl named Johanna. Congratulations to her and her family!

I am in Chicago right now for a wedding. I am here for only two days and returning to California tomorrow so my apologies in advance for not “hearing” from me in the threads. :)

What else is in the news? What’s up with you this weekend?

  1. tomorrow

there are new student auditions at DS’s school, so today I am baking cookies that I will take along with me tomorrow for my shift in the parent waiting room. I remember being one of those parents.

Today I need to go in to work.  We have several IEP meetings back to back next week and I have been so pulled around the last few weeks I haven’t had a chance to complete my reports. Fortunately the reports I need to work on are for interesting/complex kids with very great parents, so that takes the sting out of giving up some of my lounging time.  I am working with one neurotic parent and have spent so much time on the report for his daughter, who does not have any special needs, that I pushed other reports back so that he could have his early. And then he didn’t pick it up. Grrrrr.

  3. today

I am in the convergence zone.  Everything is piling on.

We have massive damage to our house from a storm a month ago, the contractor that was supposed to give us an estimate at 8:30 just showed up at 9:30.

My MIL,SIL and soon to be BIL are staying with us, should be here soon.

We have come to the conclusion that our house is never “guest ready” which has meant major cleaning all week, finishing touches this morning.

My daughter got her license the week before last, but had her driving privileges suspended by us last weekend for breaking a driving rule.  So technically last night was the first weekend night she was driving, and backed into a car at 6:15pm while parallel parking.  LOL

Work is insanely busy and stressful.

Oh yeah and DH is going on a job interview where the HQ is a 5 hour drive each way on Monday, which leaves me to entertain his mom on my own.  Good stuff.

      • thanks

and yes, it was an honest mistake and we are not upset about it.  If she would have been doing something dumb like texting and driving and hit something that would have been a different story.  But I don’t even try to parallel park the car she was driving.

The difference is that at 42 I know my limitations and at 17 she is just realizing the meaning of the word.  That is what we told her we wish she gets out of this experience, learning that if she is not good at something in the driving world, ask for practice time with us or don’t do it.

And I was kicking back after a long week, had a couple of beers and when she called, I was like, oh crap what is the responsible mom thing to do?  I talked to the guy and I think we should be able to resolve it without going to the insurance which is awesome because we have a huge claim with them right now for the house.

    • wow

that is a lot on your plate, and entertaining inlaws on your own can be stressful.

Hang in there and know we’re always here if you need to vent.

  5. update

I want to thank you all for your good thoughts earlier this week as my MIL visited the specialists in Dallas.

And it’s a good news/bad news thing.  The good news is that the doctor she saw is a professor of surgical oncology, so he knows his stuff. Not to disparage the doctors she has been seeing, but she lives in a smallish town [100k people] and sees an oncologist and a general surgeon. So this guy definitely has more experience with what she’s dealing with than anyone she’s seen before.

And then — more good news — he believes that he can remove the entire tumor so that it is gone forever and won’t keep coming back [unlike every other liver surgery she's had before -- they thought they got it all, but didn't; or more recently, knew they had not gotten all the cancer]. Sounds great, right?

Well, the bad news — his mom is not sure she wants to do it. Reasons? She’s had surgery before and they didn’t get it. Or she doesn’t want to have to go to Dallas for a bunch of followups. Um, yeah, you had surgery before by your general surgeon in a small town who even told you he didn’t want to do your last surgery but wanted you to see a specialist.  And you only had to follow up with your surgeon one time, so that’s not a huge hardship.

She has left the decision to my FIL, who is praying for guidance. Meanwhile DH is pulling out what little hair he has and trying to talk his dad through all the logical reasons that this makes perfect sense.

We went to bed Wed. night, after hearing from the doctor, thinking we’d been handed a miracle on a silver platter. Then Thursday talked to his parents and felt like we’d been struck in the head with a 2 x 4.

I’m just a bit speechless but hoping that they will ultimately decide to do it. To me it’s a question of “this guy is offering you your LIFE back” vs. just hanging out and dying of cancer.  Send more good thoughts!

computer died and I lost my post.

So, Jules’ scans went well, but we won’t have results for at least a week.  ::sigh::  The waiting is the hardest part.

I’m meeting with the head of Hands and Voices Oregon‘s Guide By Your Side, which supports and advocates for the parents of Deaf and Hard of Hearing children.  It is one of the only organizations that doesn’t push any specific form of communication (ASL, SEE, TC, Cued speech or Oral) over another, and I’m very excited to be not only joining them, but becoming a sponsor of theirs (through my Signing Time business).

Wer’re meeting a friend for drinks this afternoon (Mary is going to watch the kids).  I’m very excited, oddly enough.  :)

Registration for my classes has been open for 3 days, and no one has signed up yet (no pun intended).  I shouldn’t be discouraged, but I am.  I’m hoping that the fact that I’m doing two Deaf History Month Readings will help with sign-ups, at least for summer classes.  This whole process is nervewracking.

      • “Total communication”

an official way of integrating all of the various communication modes.  I actually think it is a great idea, personally.

    • formating on sign language link

fyi  - when I click to your link the formating is a little strange … like the row of purple hands & the purple heart are covering text.   It might just be my computer but thought I would mention it so you can troubleshoot.   Just some feedback because I want your website to look great.  I use IE.

    • Do you offer free trials?

Sometimes that’s a good way to get people in the door.  Then they love it and sign up!  You can also do an event that is open to the public and try to get local parenting mags to write it up.  If there are local e-newsletter lists for parents try posting there or even better, have a friend post for you singing your praises.

      • I am…just waiting for scheduling

to get finalized.  I’ll be doing a free class at a local indoor playground once a month.  I’m hoping that the free classes get some attention, but I had to find a place I could hold a free class and not go broke.  :)

I am doing a free workshop/class on 3/6 in mefpdx’s space (thank you, thank you, thank you), but so far no one has singed up.  :/  We shall see.

  9. Congratulations on the potty training!

I’m declaring Inkspot potty-trained as well. He’s been more or less accident free for more than a week, and he seems to now accept the idea that pooping on the potty is a lot cooler than pooping in one’s pants. It’s a miracle!

    • I’ll echo that

      Huzzah for Eli and Inkspot!!!!

DS2′s back to pooping in the potty, and a couple days ago he had a “wet fart” (sorry TMI). We were about to go to DS1′s karate class so I offered him, with much trepidation, a pull-up and he said, insulted, “No. I don’t want a pull-up!” YAYYYYYY.
He has also stayed dry the last few nights. I really think I’ve bought my last pack of pull-ups! Glory hallelujah.

      • me too

        I think I’m done too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have one box of unopened Huggies left that we never had to use, now do I donate them today to the food pantry at church? Big decisions.

  11. Karate Kid

    in other news, today DS1 participated in his first karate (tae kwon do) tournament. He did fine, and enjoyed it. I wanted to stay and watch the weapons combat and the demo teams but the boys were started to be a public nuisance, so we left.    :-}

    • DS is in the kitchen

right now making chocolate chip-oatmeal. Next time we go for just chocolate chip, I’m going to try lennie’s. The reviews are unbelievable ;)

      • can’t stop

eating them. Kids haven’t had any yet.
I might use 2 cups chips instead of 3 next time… the dough is that good.
You’ve made me a very happy woman!

        • I did use 2 cups

because I had a small bag of chips and there were only 2 cups in there.  No one here is complaining!  Also, I made them smaller, so that I can put them in lunchboxes-

      • I managed to mess up

because I tried to do half a batch and forgot about that halfway through (yep, I have too much on my mind at the moment). I saved them by adding more of the butter-sugar-egg mic, but then foudn out that my oven is not really big enough for 9 cookies on a tray so they all sort of grew together.

Now that I have all that figured out, and that I really should not bake them longer than 17 mins (the edges did not seem crisp enough and the middle too soft, but that changed when the cooled down), I’m confident the next time they’ll be even more delicious than they already are now! I’ve never made this type of cookies before, so I thought the baking process was intriguing: very cool to see the balls sag and melt to become perfect cookies!

Thank you for sharing the recipe lennie – the cookies take me back to the US (although my coffee tastes better ;-) ).

        • time

I did the first tray about 17 minutes, I thought they needed to be a little browned like the tollhouse ones.  The second tray were better!

      • Hmmm, I don’t remember

        Here it is:

1 c butter, melted (and cooled)
1 c firm packed brown sugar
        1 c white sugar
        1 T vanilla
2 eggs + one egg yolk
        3 c flour
        1 tsp baking soda
        1 tsp salt
        3 c chocolate chips

mix the first five ingredients together, add the (sifted together) dry ingredients, stir in the chips
Use a 2oz scoop or 1/4 c measuring cup and roll dough into LARGE balls.  (I could only fit 6 to a cookie sheet)  Place on the cookie sheet (lined with parchment) and put in the fridge for 30 m up to overnight
Bake at 350F for 15-17 minutes.  You want them not browned, just barely brown on the bottom edges, still soft and puffy in the middle.

        Did I get this right?

        • Looks good to me

Feel like I need to give credit to the cookbook from whence the recipe has come: Sticky, Chewy, Messy, Gooey Treats for Kids by Jill O’Connor

  13. Munch today,

out to dinner after, discussion for seven hours with new friend and potential….something…before we both started falling asleep where we sat and laughed and said we must send him home, and I am attempting to sit on excitement because after all, one does NOT know, and, you know, so we’ll see in due time.

But very excited underneath it all.

    • I’m trying to get a free Weds

to take a friend out to her first munch.  She’s all excited about meeting other people with similar proclivities, but won’t go alone.  :)

        • Generally a restaurant-based

gathering of people into power exchange and other kinky stuff. Nothing naughty going on, lots of just hanging out with friends where you don’t necessarily need to edit your conversation. “My submissive said….er, I mean my boyfriend said….” type of editing. Often once everyone’s done eating there’s a roundtable discussion of an issue or a presentation on a topic. Last time we had one by a psychologist who is also into this about how to use psychological techniques to further amplify the impact of what you do, and I found it totally fascinating.

          • Ours was WAY less formal

just non-vanilla folks and sandwiches.  :)  We did a lot of “so, you do what, exactly?” learning.  :)

  15. Tiger Woods

Just reading the Tiger Woods apology reactions instead of real news.

I am cracking up at the women who he cheated on his wife with who are mad because he didn’t apologize to them too.

    Are they kidding me???

  17. MI Paste

Has anyone used MI paste with their kids?  Harry has some white spots on his front teeth that I thought we’d just have to live with, but the dentist suggested doing a 3 month course with MI paste to fix them.  My research shows it’s all positive, which makes me suspicious- any data set that has no outliers or that is that unbalanced is fishy to me.

And since MT  is the Oracle of All Human Knowledge, I figured I’d ask here.

  19. Markers on the wall

This child is FIVE YEARS OLD.  Why would she use a marker on her bedroom wall AND floor???
CHuck E Cheese party was a huge success!  Then I got to go out to dinner and a movie with my friend last night.  She’s my closest friend but she’s young and exhausting.  High maintenance but doesn’t realize it.  So it was a great time but now I feel like I need to recover from that and the party!
We saw Shutter Island and it was really good!  I was afraid it would be really scry but it wasn’t, just a good thriller.  One part of the story line involved violence against children which is hard to stomach but it was a great story and I was seriously impressed with the acting.

        • careful with those things

They removed the stain by removing a very thin layer of the stained surface.  You’re basically taking off the stain with sandpaper.

          • Yeah

I learned that on my cabinets…
It came right off the walls but the floor in their room needs refinished and is so marred that even the eraser (I tried) can’t reach the deeper parts!  Of course, the marker is nothing compared to said marring, not to mention paint etc… I think they had carpet down before we moved in, we put some in and didn’t like it so now it’s sitting there waiting to be refinished.
